From black (dowsers being used on projection) ...audio crescendos from a low pulsating beat (aka Jaws). At a momentary audio “hit”, the screenfills with water splash to a full “white out”
Audio echoes as if POV of “coming too” from a “knock out “ punch. Bubbles fill the screen
Natural sounds surround while POV is full screen of “boiling” rapids.
Feathered vignettes of masterfully handled kayakers wipe across the entire screen...against our “boiling” rapids

Right now were standing right in themiddle of what is the Olympic slalomcourse here at the NationalWhitewater Center….

One of the neat things about theway we built this course is several
adaptable systems allows us tochange the character of the flow…..…..some days it’s easier.
One way we do that is with our pegboard system.
The big part of this design process isthinking about who's gonna use thispark, why they are going to use itand try to design around those
needs.

One of the things that the sciencetells us is that if we pinch the water itwill actually speed up instead of
slowing down as it does with theobstacles that it pours over.
These doors allow us to adjust howfast the river goes as it goes downthe course through this very verynarrow, very very tricky section.
We did that through the use ofstopticles. This is a stopticle here. ...If I pull out the pin and pull the gatein, in a matter of minutes I havemade this section wider ...

In a matter of minutes take what iscurrently a gently flowing part of theriver and create a torrential hydraulicright in the middle of the course.

This particular kayak is aninteresting story. Back before the1996 Olympic games, all the kayaksthat were currently available...
This pump station is what makes allthis white water possible.
21a
These pumps are used to bring thatwater up to the upper pond and thenflow down each of the seperatechannels.
24b
So this design itself is not only mysenior project but the first evercomputer designed white waterslalom racing kayak.

... That actual design methodologyis still used today to make manytypes of kayaks.
All through school and especially inhigh school, you would not havelooked at me and said, that's anengineer, that's a budding engineer.
I had trouble in math ...
When these things start to have realworld applications, even though they
seem a little boring now, at the endof the day they give you so muchpower to create things that peoplecould not create without it.
Being an engineer is a great thing. You're the guy that gets to decidewhat goes where and how thisworks and figure out whatever theproblem is whether it's boat speedor how much water to pump up astation.

Just from that decision from thatdesign you're able to create thiswhole water world of things to doand…
…for me I love being an engineerand every day we come up withsomething crazy like that and itleads to a whole thing again just like
this.
For me it's been one of the bestchoices I've every made.
