Colin Buchanan (CB) with its dedicated SustainableTravel team has unrivalled experience in university travelplanning: we understand the transport issues that aceall who travel to academic institutions. University travelpatterns are complex and include sta commuter travel, ull and part time student travel, occasional visitors andbusiness travel. By introducing an eective travel plan, auniversity can help reduce trafc and parking congestionswhilst achieving environmental objectives and oeringreal travel choices to sta and students.
Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU)
CB is developing travel plans and a car park management strategy or the
Universitys capital estates programme or the next 5 years, which involves
consolidating seven existing campuses into just two sites, covering 35,000
students and 4,500 sta. This project involves the creation o a voluntary
over-arching travel plan or the whole University, two development-related
travel plans, a robust and specialised car parking management strategy anda needs-based permit allocation system. CB has also worked with the wider
local authority on a project involving MMU, the University o Manchester, The
College o Music and Manchester Royal Infrmary, to create a Higher Education
Precinct (HEP) o Sustainable Travel programmes.
Kingston University
CB is currently working with Kingston University to update its travel plan
across all campuses. A sta travel survey was launched online and has been
promoted at all university sites by Sustainable Travel Team members, to achieve
a high student response rate. These results will then eed into the travel plan to
provide an indication o where reviews o the current travel options available
are needed. This travel plan will provide an overarching strategy to promote
travel by sustainable transport, taking into consideration the varying transport
inrastructure and accessibility o all sites.
St Georges University London
CB recently worked with St. Georges University o London to develop a travel
plan or the entire organisation covering 2,000 ull time students and 1,200
sta. The project will encourage sta and students to use sustainable travel
options to travel to the main campus with St. Georges hospital and must
include the nearby halls o residence which are situated on the same site. This
site is a huge trip generator and the transport planning approach has had to be
extremely robust.

University o Edinburgh Travel Survey
CB was commissioned by the University o Edinburgh to undertake a detailed
survey and to estimate the carbon ootprint associated with University travel.
The survey included a carbon ootprint methodology to calculate commuting
carbon emissions. We designed a web-based questionnaire to capture detailed
inormation about the sta and student travel, including inormation on
multi-modal journeys. Individual carbon ootprints were calculated, providing
immediate eedback to participants. An overall travel to work/study carbonootprint or the entire university was calculated as a benchmark.
University o Edinburgh Saety, Access and Mobility Audit
CB undertook a scoping review o the implications o the Health and Saety
Executives (HSE) Workplace Transport Saety guidance within the wider
context o access and mobility at each o the main university sites. The
work involved an access and mobility audit o entrance and egress acilities
available or all road users together with a prioritised list o recommendations
on aspects to be improved.
University o Brighton Travel Plan
A travel plan or the whole o the University o Brighton (UB) has been
commissioned by the Universitys Estates & Facilities ManagementDepartment. The UB travel plan will seek to reduce single occupancy car
travel to, and between, campuses, by enabling and promoting use o public
transport, car share, walking and cycling or sta and students, as well as
visitors. The travel plan will be developed in 2009 and implemented in 2010.
Jewel and Esk College
CB developed campus specifc travel plans in support o the redevelopment
o the Jewel and Esk College in Midlothian and Edinburgh. A ull sta and
student travel survey was undertaken using both on-line and paper based
survey techniques.. An accessibility assessment was undertaken using the
postcode inormation collated rom the travel survey results. The results were
used to determine the most appropriate transport provision to access the
college.
Stirling University Parking Management
CB undertook detailed surveys to review a number o parking concerns
at the universitys Bridge o Allan campus. A number o parking control
strategies were examined with a recommendation that an access control
regime involving permits and automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) be
implemented. CB drew up the specifcation, managed the tendering process
and tested and commissioned the system prior to its ull introduction. It was
one o the frst ANPR systems to be implemented in the UK. CB continued to
help the university by providing a sotware tool to manage permit issue and
parking inringements at the campus.
