Footbridge
Part of the original tramway linking Carnarvon with the One Mile Jetty. It was restored and reopened in 1996 & is listed with the Heritage Council of WA
Stretching 1493m and constucted in 1897 this jetty is of significant historical & social importance to Carnarvon. Responsible for bringing tourism & trade to the town, the jetty was restored & reopened in 1998 as part of the Carnarvon Heritage Precinct. The “Coffee Pot” train ferries tourists along the jetty which is popular for fishing, crabbing and viewing magnificent sunsets.
Levee Bank System
Many schemes for diverting floodwaters have been tried since 1908 when a channel was cut from the south arm of the Gascoyne River to Oyster Creek. Currently the town is protected by a levee bank system.
Chinamans Pool
A permanent pool & swimming spot. In the 1890’s it was a source of fresh water for the town. Shady river gums & a nature reserve attract a variety of birds.

Discovered by George Gray in 1839, it is 830kms long & commonly referred to as the life blood of Carnarvon. Its mainly subterranean water supply & fertile red sands provide life to the town & its flourishing plantations.

HMAS Sydney II Memorial
Commemorates the battle between the HMAS Sydney II and the German raider the HSK ‘Kormoran’ on the 19th November 1941.
Blowholes
Powerful ocean waves are forced through sea caves and jets of water are forced up into the air to heights of 20m, producing a spectacular sight. A protected beach, one km south, enables coral viewing and swimming with turtles. 4WD required to access boat ramp. Also a good spot for seasonal whale watching.
Gascoyne River
Usually a 300km tongue of sand, this river rarely flows but acts as a massive storage system extending underground.

Mt Augustus
The largest monocline in the world. It rises abruptly 858 metres from an arid red scrubland featuring wattles & cassias. Serveral walks to the summit are available. Rocky gorges, caves, Aboriginal rock art & a variety of flora & fauna can be seen from a 49km drive around the rock.
Gascoyne Junction
The only town in the Shire of Upper Gascoyne, it services the surrounding sheep & cattle stations.
New Beach
Dugongs, the large marine mammals that slowly graze the vast seagrass beds of Shark Bay represent about one-tenth of the world’s dugong population. Take care boating to avoid disturbing these unsuspecting creatures.
Kingsford Smith Mail Run Pathway
The route follows links between lonely outposts where the early mail drivers plied the outback delivering mail through the hostile terrain. Using primitive trucks some of these men, like Sir Kingsford Smith have become world famous, while others remain local legends.
Rocky Pool
A freshwater billabong popular for picnics. Fossils may also be found here and bird life.
Wildflowers
Displays of wildflowers depend entirely on good rain & timing. Flowering season is usually July-October. During this period Everlastings are prolific & spectacular, stretching for kilometres in carpets of white, yellow & pink.

Bernier & Dorre Island Nature Reserve
These nature reserves provide sanctuary for wildlife including rare marsupials & birds. Access is restricted & camping is prohibited. Excellent fishing with big game fish, snapper & sharks.

ONE MILE JETTYOne of WA’s longest jetties, you can walk to the end, or catch the Coffee Pot train.

OTC SPACE MUSEUMAlthough no longer used the dish still stands as a reminder of days gone by when Carnarvon’s participation in the space race helped put a man on the moon in 1969.

THE TRAMWAY AND TOWN WALK TRAILThis 3km-long walk trail takes in the Tramway Bridge, Olivia Terrace in Carnarvon’s town centre, the precinct Railway line and One Mile Jetty, and includes interpretive signage of the region’s fl ora and fauna.
COASTAL EXPERIENCESBlowholes and Point Quobba 75km North from Carnarvon. Further north fi nd hidden beaches, Quobba Station, Red Bluff and Gnaraloo Bay.
INLAND EXPERIENCESRocky Pool, deep freshwater pool 55km east of Carnarvon, it’s renowned for birdlife and the occasional fossil.
Picnic & Play with the kids at the Water Spray Playground, the town beach playground, Pioneer Park or North Water and enjoy the fresh open spaces.
Take a Walk and stroll along the Fascine & enjoy a sunset or catch a glimpse of a local graceful dolphin. Walk the Tramway & Town Walk Trail (3 km walk taking in the Precinct railway line, & includes interpretive signage of the region’s fl ora & fauna).
Take a Swim, Canoe, Kayak, Windsurf or Kite Surf or try a paddle through the mangrove creeks of the Gascoyne River’s mouth. Windsurf or kite surf or simply take a dip in the waterways around Pelican Point or the town beach.
Fish Try your luck at many of the great locations such as the One Mile Jetty, Pelican Point, Dwyers Leap or Miaboolya Beach.
Go Bird Spotting Australia’s rarest Thornbill, the singing bushlark, can be found at Bush Bay, 30km from town.
Drive or Cycle the Plantations and immerse yourself in the clean & green growing region where 70% of Perth’s winter vegetables are grown.
Visit the Library and receive temporary visitor memberships, books, internet, magazines and more.
Enjoy a BBQ and use the facilities at one of the local parks and relax in the peaceful setting.
Take in the awe and magnitude of the OTC Dish before visiting the Space & Technology Museum to learn more about the towns role in the space race.
Learn about Indigenous heritage and history of the Gascoyne, browse the local art on display, indulge in the national award winning interactive permanent exhibition which tells the stories of the Gascoyne Aboriginal people in their own words. Or maybe just sit and enjoy a coffee and some bush tucker at Gwoonwardu Mia, Gascoyne Aboriginal Heritage and Cultural Centre.
Stroll around the Heritage Precinct, including the One Mile Jetty, taking in the museum, collection of historic relics and fascinating history including the Lighthouse Keepers Cottage. Ride the Coffee Pot train or walk the One Mile Jetty (keep a watch out for Whales at certain times of the year!), one of the longest in WA or climb the water tank for a birds eye view. View the HMAS Sydney and HSK Kormoran displays or just relax in the Kiosk.
Visit Carnarvon School of the Air (during the school term) and learn how isolated children living in remote locations interact with teachers and gain an education using technology.
Follow the Carnarvon Heritage Trail visit signifi cant historical sites and learn about the history of the town.
Visit the Blowholes 75kms north of town and watch in awe as mother nature forces sea water 20 plus metres into the air.
Visit beaches at Point Quobba snorkelling amongst coral and fi sh within a safe, calm cove.
Drive along the Quobba coastline taking in some of Australia’s most spectacular coastline includes cliff views, beaches, reefs, powerful ocean swells and rugged scenery.
Visit or stay at Red Bluff, the start of the Ningaloo World Heritage Area and take a seat at the Point watching surfers ride awe-inspiring waves or watch majestic whales play in the bay during the season – Bluff Bliss!
Drive onto Gnaraloo Bay for an overnight stay and experience one of Australia’s whitest beaches fringing a tranquil turquoise bay – just magic!
Visit Bush Bay (30km south) or New Beach and try your luck at catching some of the prized local fi sh, take in some bird watching or just relax along the shores.
Take a Picnic to Rocky Pool embedded in the Gascoyne River (50kms east) and enjoy the tranquil setting, bird life and scenery.
Drive onto the town of Gascoyne Junction and then onto the Kennedy Range National Park and view the remarkable honeycomb like formations, cliff faces, bird life and seasonal wild fl owers. Camping locations are available.
Follow the Plantation Drive around the river and buy fresh local produce from stalls along the way, or visit one of the shops or cafes and purchase local homemade preserves, ice creams and dried fruit.
Treat yourself and indulge in a choc coated banana or a mango or banana smoothie.
Wander through the Gascoyne Growers Market & Carnarvon Art & Craft Market on a Saturday morning (late May to early Oct) for quality fresh produce, crafted gifts and great coffee!
