PRAYER & WORSHIP
“LET THE CHILDREN COME TO ME”
The second part of today’s Gospel (Mark 10: 13–
16) is a beautiful presentation of Jesus’ reaching out to
the children. He embraces the children, putting his
hands on them. These words of Mark make a
wonderful Scripture reading for the sacrament of
baptism. But our Lord also insists that “whoever does not
accept the kingdom of God like a child will not enter
it.” (vs. 15) Christ wants his followers to have the
simplicity, the humility, the openness of a child to be
worthy of God’s kingdom.
Here and often in the New Testament Jesus clearly
fulfills Old Testament legislation. He insists that he can do
that since he has been sent by the Father. In the Sermon on
the Mount Christ states that he has not to come to abolish
the Law and the prophets but to fulfill. (Matthew 5: 17) One
specific example is our Lord’s changing the famous “eye for
an eye and a tooth for a tooth.” (Matthew 5: 38) That
regulation of Moses was in fact an improvement over the
situation at the time. Many would retaliate far beyond the
injury. Christ goes even further and demands that his
followers actually love everyone, even their enemies.
(Matthew 5: 44)
In the first part of today’s Gospel (Mark 10: 1–12) the
Pharisees ask our Lord, “Is it lawful for a husband to
divorce his wife?” (vs. 2) The Pharisees noted that Moses
permitted a bill of divorce. Again this permission by Moses
was a great improvement. Previously the treatment of the
wives was truly horrible. The bride was seen as the property
of the husband. Legally he could not commit adultery
against his “property.” But she could be stoned to death for
the same offense. Moses again made an improvement by
insisting that when a husband divorces his wife, he must
give her a bill of divorce. Before this command of Moses,
the wife could be divorced with no protection against her
former husband.
In the matter of divorce, Christ makes a great
improvement. He wants marriage returned to the ideal
intended by the Creator: “A man leaves his father and
mother and clings to his wife, and the two become one
body.” (Genesis 2: 24) Jesus insists that permanence be an
essential quality of a marriage. He does away with the
divorce legislation of Deuteronomy 24: 1–4 by insisting that
the husband could no longer divorce his wife. There would
be equality in marriage and in all aspects of life.
The early Church had pastoral problems with the
prohibition of divorce. Exceptions were made in Matthew 5:
32 and 19: 9ff (the Petrine Privilege). There was also an
exception in 1 Corinthians 7: 10–16 (the Pauline Privilege).
