I extend my warm greetings to all of you. This is

a very special day for the Bhagwan Mahaveer

Foundation. We have assembled here to honour the

selfless services rendered by three institutions and

one individual striving for the betterment of our

society.

We are honoured and privileged that the awards

are being presented by Shri Subramanian Swamy,

honourable Member of Rajya Sabha. I consider it a

rare privilege and honour to welcome Shri

Subramanian Swamy, who has graciously consented

to be the Chief Guest of the function and present the th

20 Mahaveer Awards. We are indeed fortunate to

have him with us today. On behalf of Bhagwan

Mahveer Foundation, I extend a very warm welcome

to you, Sir and thank you for your gracious presence.

Shri Subramnaian Swamy is an inspiring leader

and needs no introduction. He is a source of

inspiration to many of us. I feel honoured to say a few

words about him.

Shri Subramanian Swamy is an accomplished

economist, mathematician and a political leader who

presently serves as a Member of Parliament in Rajya

Sabha

He was born in Chennai. He obtained PhD in

Economics from Harvard University. He has been an

honourable member of Parliament in both the Houses

in the past and has occupied many prestigious

positions in the Union Government. He was Union

Minister of Commerce and Law. Shri Subramanian

Swamy also simplified trade procedures and

formulated a new export strategy which became the

forerunner of trade reform adopted subsequently.

Shri Swamy has published papers and authored

many books. I wish to name a few books written by

him. They are

• : A Strategy of Deterrence for Terrorism in India

India's National Security.

I once again welcome you Sir and thank you for

having consented to be the Chief Guest for today’s

function.

I am very happy to extend a warm welcome to

Shri D.R. Mehta, Former Chairman, Securities &

Exchange Board of India and our esteemed member

of the Selection Jury, who has kindly consented to

preside over the function.

Sir, we are privileged to have you as a member of

the Selection Jury and thank you for your support and

guidance.

We are also honoured by the presence of our

honourable members of the Selection Jury and the

Shortlisting Committee who have been a source of

strength and support to us.

I am very happy to welcome our awardees,

Shri James Myers from Animal Aid Charitable Trust,

Smt. Sheela Balaji from AIM for Seva, Shri Harishwar

Dayal from Arpana Research and Charities Trust and

Dr. M C Nahata.

I extend a warm and cordial welcome to all the

distinguished guests, dignitaries and invitees and the

members of the media.

I wish to briefly share with you the primary aim of

setting up the Bhagwan Mahaveer Foundation. There

are individuals and institutions in our society who are

rendering selfless service to alleviate the sufferings of

the less fortunate, the weak, underprivileged and the

voiceless and to bring about improvement in the

society at large, without expecting any material

rewards. Such rare and altruistic persons need to be

identified, nurtured and honoured. Their selfless

service should be brought to light so that others may

be encouraged and inspired to emulate them. With

this strong desire, my father, Shri N Sugalchand Jain

founded the Bhagwan Mahaveer Foundation in 1994,

with Bharat Ratna Late Shri C.Subramaniam as its

Chairman.

The number of awards increased from 1 to 4

gradually over the years and the Award money from

Rs 5 Lakhs to Rs. 40 lakhs.

The Foundation has so far honoured 59

awardees. Today we will be honouring 4 more

awardees taking the total to 63 from 17 States and 1

Union Territory.

The awards are presented to individual or

institution for excellence in human endeavour in the

following four fields

• Non Violence & Vegetarianism

• Education

• Medicine

• Community & Social Service

The awards consist of a cash component of

Rs.10 lakhs, a citation and a memento for each of the

above fields. I am happy to announce that the cash

component of Rs. 10 lakhs which is perhaps one of

the highest given by any NGO is totally exempted from

income tax under Section 10 (17-A (1)) facilitating

the awardee to utilize the award money in full for the

noble cause.

I wish to share with you the procedure followed

in selecting the awardees. The process begins with

inviting nominations from eminent personalities of

the Nation such as Governors, Ministers, Members of

the Parliament, Senior Bureaucrats, Vice Chancellors

of Universities and the general public. Nominations

are also called for through adver tisements in

newspapers and digital media.

The received nominations are shortlisted by the

Shortlisting Committee.

The shor tlisted entities are visited by the

representatives of the Foundation, wherever required,

to ascertain the overall genuineness and the positive

impact of the services rendered by the nominees.

The shortlisted entities and reports are placed

before the Selection Jury, who evaluate and decide

the awardees.

The earlier awards were presented by eminent

personalities like the President of India, Vice

President of India, Chief Minister, Governors and

Union Ministers in formal functions.

This year, we received 367 nominations from 24

States and 3 Union Territories of our Country. These

nominations were evaluated and placed before the

Selection Jury. The Selection Jury met at Bengaluru

on 15th April 2017 and the awardees were selected.

I thank the Selection Jury members, Shortlisting

Committee members, the sponsors of the nominees

and the nominees for sparing their time and effort.

I once again warmly welcome one and all.

Bhagwan Mahaveer Foundation - Profile

Bhagwan Mahaveer Foundation was

established by Shri N Sugalchand Jain in 1994 to

identify, encourage and honour the individuals and

institutions who are doing selfless service for the

welfare of the underprivileged and the weak in our

society. With a view to focus public attention on the

activities of these good Samaritans and encourage

others to emulate them and take up community and

social ser vices, the Bhagwan Mahaveer

Foundation has instituted the Mahaveer Awards

which is given every year.

The awards are given for excellence in human

endeavour in the fields of Non-violence &

Vegetar ianism, Educat ion, Medicine and

Community & Social Service. The awards carry a

cash component of Rs.10 Lakhs each with a

memento and a citation.

The Foundation has ensured that the individual

awardees are exempted from income tax on the cash

component under Section 10 (17- A (1)) of the Income

Tax Act. This enables the awardees to utilize the award

money in full for the noble cause.

Nominations in the prescribed format are

invited from around the country, enlisting the

help of d ist r ic t administ rators, leg is lators,

bureaucrats, educationists, media, social workers,

parl iamentarians and other eminent people.

Nominations are received every year from almost all the

States in the country.

The awardees are decided by an eminent Selection

Jury headed by Justice Shri M. N. Venkatachaliah,

Former Chief Justice of India.

There are a number of good Samaritans

ceaselessly serving the weak and the voiceless in

our society without seeking recognition and

unmindful of any rewards. The Foundation has

identified such entities and honoured them in formal

functions. Eminent personalities of our country like

the President of India, the Vice President of India,

Governors, Chief Ministers and Ministers have given

away the awards.

So far 63 awardees from 17 States and 1 Union

Territory have been honoured in recognition of their

very high standard of selfless service for the welfare

of the underprivileged.

th20 Mahaveer Award for Excellence in Human Endeavourin the Sphere of Non-Violence & Vegetarianism

Animal Aid Charitable Trust, Udaipur, Rajasthan

Animal Aid Charitable Trust has been serving

abandoned animals in Udaipur, since 2002. This

Trust takes efforts to stop the illegal dog catching and

displacement. It has saved the lives of 6000 dogs

since 2015.

Animal Aid Charitable Trust receives many calls

for help and assistance to control, capture and

transport sick, abused, abandoned animals. The staff

promptly respond to these calls and undertake the

difficult task and prevent harm and accidents to the

animals and public. The Staff of the Trust descend

deep wells, pipes and other enclosures to rescue

distressed, trapped, injured and sick animals. Animal

Aid provides shelter for over 700 abandoned animals

at any given time.

The Trust also encourages people to be

Vegetarians by reaching out through leaflets and

conducting bi weekly outreach programmes.

The Bhagwan Mahaveer Foundation is pleased

to confer the 20th Mahaveer Award in the field of Non-

Violence & Vegetarianism on Animal Aid Charitable

Trust, Udaipur in recognition of its exemplary service

for protection and care of animals. We believe many

others will be inspired to emulate them.

th20 Mahaveer Award for Excellence in Human Endeavourin the Sphere of Education

AIM For Seva, Chennai, Tamil Nadu

AIM for Seva, established in 2001, helps children

in rural and tribal areas to overcome barriers to their

education. It has projects in 16 States. AIM for Seva,

has set up more than 100 Free Student Homes and

helped thousands of children access quality education

without any cost. This has helped their families and

communities to escape poverty and live with dignity.

Needy children are taken into the Free Student.

Home and given free food, accommodation and

education.

It has set up vocational training institutes which

provide skill and training. Initiatives like 'Theatre for

Development,' assist children to learn curriculum.

The Trust focuses on the all-round development

of the students which includes excellence in

academics, communication skills, character building

and encourages literacy along with creativity.

Healthcare activities are also undertaken to

ensure good health for the children. Salt fortified with

micronutrients is given to children to address

deficiencies in nutrition. In 2012-13, organic farming

was introduced in several homes.

The Bhagwan Mahaveer Foundation is pleased to

confer the 20th Mahaveer Award in the field of

Education on AIM For Seva in recognition of its

exemplary service. We believe many others would be

inspired to emulate them.

th20 Mahaveer Award for Excellence in Human Endeavourin the Sphere of Medicine

Dr. M C Nahata, Indore, Madhya Pradesh

Dr. M C Nahata, an Ophthalmologist has been

rendering services for over six decades in the field of

Eye Care focussing on Prevention, Rehabilitation,

Academics and Social work. He has been a pioneer in

establishing and developing newer services like

Retinal & Laser Units, Cryosurgery technology

(1971),

Low Vision Services and development of school

of Optometry.

The Professor has conducted 700 eye camps

and performed 2 lakh operations. He has detected and

corrected refractive errors in a population of 2.5 lakhs

spread over 283 villages in Vidisha district in Madhya

Pradesh. He started a campaign for promotion of Eye

Donation.

He is credited with management of calamities at

the time of outbreak of Epidemic Conjunctivitis

(1979), Methyl Alcohol poisoning and Bhopal gas

tragedy (1984). He visited seven tribal districts of

Madhya Pradesh – Dhar, Jhabua, Alirajpur, Badwani,

Khargone, Khandwa and Burhanpur and implemented

th20 Mahaveer Award for Excellence in Human Endeavourin the Sphere of Community & Social Service

Arpana Research & Charities Trust, Karnal, Haryana

Arpana Research & Charities Trust was

established in 1980 to serve the rural folks of Karnal

district, Haryana. It runs a 135 bedded hospital, with 3

operation theatres, well equipped ICU and has

specialised clinics and daily OPD. This hospital is

catering to the needs of over 1000 villages.

Arpana Rural Development Services provide

loving care to neglected children under five years of

age. They have assisted in starting women Self Help

Groups in remote villages of Himachal Pradesh.

Farmers clubs are formed where they are taught

effective farming and irrigation methods for the

terraced plots. Over 8000 meetings have been

conducted to create awareness about antenatal care,

AIDS, nutrition, prevention of seasonal diseases,

family welfare, right to education and domestic

violence.

The Trust has identified 1878 differently abled

persons from 55 villages and assisted in forming 48

Differently Abled Persons Organisations. The DPOs

have generated savings of over Rupees 24 lakhs.

Some have started their own businesses. This has

given them confidence, immense self-esteem, dignity

and opportunity to participate in village activities.

Mahaveer Award For Essays

Under the aegis of Bhagwan Mahaveer

Foundation, Essay competition is being conducted

from 2016 for School and College students to

acquaint the young people with the lofty ideals and

teachings of Bhagwan Mahaveer and to emphasize

the need and contemporary relevance of Ahimsa, and

Peaceful harmonious co-existence as preached by

Bhagwan Mahaveer.

The response of schools and colleges is very

encouraging. For the first Mahaveer Award for Essay

competition, 3045 students from 22 Schools and

1274 students from 11 Colleges participated.

SINGHVI CHARITABLE TRUST

The Singhvi Charitable Trust was established in

1974 by Shri N Sugalchand Jain. He strongly believes

in the universal philosophy “Live and Let Live” of

Bhagwan Mahaveer and has an immense desire to

help the needy and assist the underprivileged in our

society. The Trust under takes socially relevant

activities and addresses the felt need of the

underprivileged through its activities with special

focus on health care and encourages entities doing

selfless service in the society.

The Trust organises eye and dental camps every

Sunday in rural Tamil Nadu and daily camps in the

Singhvi Scan & Diagnostic Centre, Triplicane,Chennai,

catering to the weaker section of our society.

The Trust has conducted 4789 rural camps.

Following are the details of the beneficiaries till June

2017 since inception.

The Trust also gives assistance of Rs.10,000 for

Singhvi Scan & Diagnostic Centre

The Singhvi Scan & Diagnostic Centre was

started in 2002 at 170, Triplicane High Road, Chennai

- 600 005.

It is equipped with latest diagnostic equipment

with facilities for CT Scan, Ultrasound Scan,

digitalized X-rays, Echo cardiogram and ECG.

Modest fee is charged to enable more patients to

avail the services. Daily dental and eye camps are

Singhvi Charitable Trust has established a Palliative

Care Centre named Mahaveer Ashray in the

Smt.Chandrabai Singhvi Campus at Sriperumbudur,

near Chennai. It will be a unit of Cancer Institute

(WIA), Adyar. Shri N Sugalchand Jain, an active

member of the Governing Council of the Cancer

Institute,

Adyar and ever sensitive to the urgent need of the

poor and underprivileged, terminally ill persons,

discussed the need for a Palliative Care Centre with

Padma Vibhushan Dr. V. Shanta, Chairperson, of the

Cancer Institute, Adyar. After discussion, he decided

to set up a Palliative Care Centre in Sriperumbudur

and hand it over to the Cancer Institute.

The 50 bedded Mahaveer Ashray is a state of the

art care centre housed in a well planned aesthetic

building with patient-comfort ambience, equipment

and furniture. It will focus on minimizing the pain of the

terminally ill patients, relieve sufferings of the inmates

and assist them to spend each of the remaining days

with dignity and comfort.

The Mahaveer Ashray situated in 5 acres of land in

the Smt. Chandrabai Campus was handed over to Dr. V.

Shanta on 22nd June, 2017.

The Cancer Institute, Adyar will fully manage,

control and operate the Mahaveer Ashray. This noble

project is the outcome of a deep desire to serve and

share.

Encouragement to students Avadhan Programme

The Avadhan Programme was organized by Singhvi Charitable Trust on 11th November 2016 at TAG

Auditorium, Rajaji Bhavan’s Vidyashram, Chennai. The Avadhan was performed by Shri Jaynesh Jain in the holy

presence of Sadhvi Shri Sanghamitraji Maharaj. About 1000 students from various schools of Chennai

participated in the programme.

Avadhan is a programme which exhibits the power and limitless potential of the mind. The Founder Trustee

Shri N Sugal Chand Jain wanted the students to witness and learn this rare ability to recall and respond

simultaneously to multiple tasks and also unlock the latent potential of the students.

People For Animals

Among the many animal welfare projects in

which Shri Sugalchand Jain is connected, the

establishment of the People For Animals, Chennai in

1998 is an important milestone. He is a co-founder of

this Trust. He has provided 3.5 acres of land in which

the animal welfare shelter is running for the past 20

years.. Presently the shelter is home to about 600

dogs, 65 cats, 24 horses, 220 cattle, 35 goats, 65

birds. As the number of animals has increased Shri

Sugalchand Jain has ear marked 18.4 acres of land in

Uthukottai, near Chennai, where these animals will be

transferred as soon as the requisite infrastructure is

ready.

The day-to-day activities of the Trust is looked

after by its Managing Trustee,

Smt.Shiranee Pereira, a dedicated animal welfare

activist. Sick animals, unwanted abandoned animals,

animals subjected to abuse and cruelty are rescued

and brought to the shelter where they are cared,

healed and sheltered. The People for Animals has

rescued many dogs from being killed by actively doing

Animal Birth Control/immunization activities.

Mahaveer Institute of Technology & Science (MITS)Jadan, Pali, Rajasthan

The students taking admission in MITS are given

scholarship by the Vidhya Jyothi Trust based on their

percentage in qualifying exams as well as according

to the percentage secured during their academic

period at MITS. A student scoring 90% in XII Standard

exam is given 90% scholarship and it is valid for all

four years period at MITS subject to the student’s

performance in academics during each semester.

With the aim of providing higher education to the

rural people, the Vidhya Jyothi Trust established

Mahaveer Institute of Technology and Science (MITS)

at Jadan in Pali District, Rajasthan in the year 2014.

The College, situated in a rural area, provides a

good opportunity and conducive atmosphere for

quality education to the rural students. The College

has four engineering branches namely Civil,

Mechanical, Computer Science, Electrical. The

present student strength is 419.

The Trust has extended its ambit of service to

provide health care to the rural people. It conducts

medical camp on regular basis in remote areas like

Siyat, Phulad, Jojawar, Nana, Jadan, Kantaliya,

Sevari, Magartalb, Bagari, Marwar Junction, Goriya,

Bhimana and Bhabhan so as to provide benefit to the

people who do not have easy accessibility to medical

help. Till June 2017, 17 camps benefitting 7497 eye

& dental patients have been conducted and 346

cataract operations have been performed.

To inculcate healthy personal hygiene habits and

prevent spread of disease and ensure clean

environment, the Vidhya Jyothi Trust has constructed

toilets in Schools for the benefit of the students,

especially girl students, in Rajasthan. This is in

response to the call of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan

launched by the Hon’ble Prime Minister, Shri Narendra

Modi. Availability of toilets in schools also minimises

drop outs of girl students.

Under this programme toilets have been

constructed in four government schools in the village

of Sojat, Bagawas, Jadan and Siyat; this is an ongoing

programme.

Smt. Chandrabai Computer Literacy Programme

idea of ‘knowledge available at click' to contribute to

the vision of digital India. Under this Programme,

trained professionals carry the laptops to various

Government Schools and familiarise the students

The Vidhya Jyothi Trust has launched the

Smt. Chandrabai Mobile Computer l i teracy

programme to enable the rural students of Pali district

JAINSINDIA TRUST

The JainsIndia Trust was set up by Shri N

Sugalchand Jain in 2002 as a religious charitable trust

to provide various kinds of relief to the poor and needy

members of Jain community.

The Trust also provides stipend to students

pursuing higher studies in Jainology in the University

of Madras. In 2016-17, 59 students were given

stipend .

It also provides financial assistance to the needy

widows, deserted women and other deserving people

belonging to Jain community for the maintenance of

their livelihood. During the year 2016-17, 167 needy

people were given monthly pension.

EMPATHY FOUNDATION

Empathy Foundation is the CSR wing of M/s

Sugal & Damani Group. Since 2005 it is engaged in the

activity of building rural infrastructure mainly in the

field of EDUCATION AND HEALTHCARE. The

Foundation works with the sole aim to help the needy

and underprivileged sections of the society by

providing them with various basic needs including

Medical assistance and Good Educat ional

infrastructure throughout the State of Maharashtra.

Its main activities are:

Construction of New School Building and

repairing existing School Building of Zilla Parishad,

Grampanchayat, Municipal, Govt. owned Schools in

Rural Maharashtra. The Foundation has constructed

141 schools covering a built up area of around 4.13

lakhs sq.ft.. The schools are situated in the rural

districts of Raigad, Ratnagiri, Thane (Navi Mumbai)

Beed, Sangli, Kolhapur, Pune, Satara, Sindhudurg and

Solapur in the State of Maharashra.

Foundation conducts health camps for free Eye /

Dental check up free distribution of Of spectacles, and

has tie up with Raigad Zilla Parishad under Rural

Health Program called Manav Vikas Karyakram.
