‘Juniors get in the swing’ Iwould like to thank the TeAwamutu and Stewart Alexan-der Golf Clubs for initiating thismuch needed programme toencourage our youth.
The facilities at the Te Awa-mutu Golf Club are fantastic andthe children were able to under-stand the skills needed to playthe game. Waikato Golf andSport Waikato staff were thereto support the programme andmake sure no child missed outon the opportunity to learn thegame.
It does not surprise me thatall of the children were buzzingwith their new experience andwill return to keep the newWaipa Junior Golf Club going.
The success of this afterschool programme will see moreyoungsters emerging in thissport.
The coaches for the current
course were excellent in teach-ing the basics of the play and Isincerely hope there are nobarriers to encouraging all ofthese young enthusiasts, andany other young person thatwants to give it a go, to continueplaying.
It will be interesting to see ifthe discipline and accuracyneeded to play golf spills overinto the school class room andhome.
Learning the etiquette of golfcame naturally to the childrenas they shared their energy andprogress.
Thank you to the organisersfor arranging this new oppor-tunity for the youth of Te Awa-mutu and surrounding districts.
I look forward to watchingmy grandchildren progressthrough the beginners stage toplaying a round of golf, maybewith their parents.

How prepared are youfor an emergency?
TC180914SP03A
WHAT would you do? Civil Defence operations manager MartinBerryman wants to help people prepare for the unexpected.
Preparing for the unexpected iswhat Martin Berryman’s job isabout — and next week he hopes toencourage everyone else to do thesame.
Mr Berryman is operationsmanager — Civil Defence Emer-gency Management for the WesternWaikato Emergency OperatingArea, which takes in Waipa, Otoro-hanga and Waitomo.
Next week is National CivilDefence ‘Get Ready Get Thru’ weekwith a theme of ‘What would youdo?’
Mr Berryman is setting up in thelibrary in each of the four maintowns in his region between 10amand 2pm to answer any questionsand offer solutions for what isneeded to get ready and get througha disaster.
He will be in the Te AwamutuLibrary on Tuesday and invitespeople to take a few moments topop in and have a talk about whatCivil Defence and Being Preparedmight mean for them — ‘Whatwould you do?’
“Until an event escalates to thepoint that a civil defence declara-tion is made, emergency servicesand agencies that normally have alegislated responsibility to man-age emergencies will still managethese events,” says Mr Berryman.
“The reason we encouragepeople to be ready to look afterthemselves for at least three days,is that a declaration may not bemade for some time so help maynot be immediately available as itwould be during normal times.
“People may have their kit setup, but it is what to do when youcan’t get money to pay for fuel orfood because the machines aredown.
“What would you do if there isno water flowing and you need touse the loo?
“People often call family andkeep in touch — but what if thephones are out. What is your planfor your family or friends?”
Mr Berryman says there arenumerous people who travelacross the Waikato to work eachday because that is where theirjob takes them.
“What if you physically can’tget home because the roads areblocked?
“It may be a natural disaster,or a major road accident, or Policelock down. Whichever it is, youcan’t get home.”
Farmers are usually well setup as they have everything avail-able on the farm to look afterthemselves and their animals on adaily basis — water tanks, genera-tors, kitchen pantries, animalfeed etc.
“But what if they had to movetheir animals because of dustfrom an eruption and otherfarmers are doing the same thing?
“It only takes about 1mm ofvolcanic dust on grass to startcausing damage to animal teeth,”says Mr Berryman.
“Sufficient stock trucks may
not be immediately available.”Mr Berryman hopes farmers
will be prompted to have thisdiscussion amongst themselves.
He says the people from Christ-church were not expecting theevent that turned their livesaround.
“The Waikato is not immune, and whether it is a natural disas-ter or an event like a foot andmouth disease outbreak, some ofour lives would be severelyimpacted,” says Mr Berryman.
He says people should takesome time to have a discussionwith others, come and talk to himat the library — and do a littlepreparation now.
Other library sessions are inCambridge on Monday, Te Kuition Wednesday and Otorohanga onThursday.
Raising awareness is the keyBY DEAN TAYLOR
Early this month we highlightedthe plight of Rebecca and JohnParker whose baby Maddox has therare mitochondrial disease that willeventually claim his life.
Since Maddox’s diagnosis thecouple have concentrated theirefforts on looking after their family, and raising awareness and money toassist the cause.
This week is GlobalMitochondrial Disease AwarenessWeek — a time where mitochondrialdisease related organisations fromall around the world join forces topromote the joint cause — finding acure.
Locally Playgym participants allwore green on Monday and held acollection.
Te Awamutu Library hasmounted a display to help the causeand Mainly Music also has a displayand Mrs Parker will be sellingawareness wristbands she had madefrom the class.
An expert in the field of rarediseases says the best outcome fromraising awareness would be more
resources for specialists in NewZealand.
Dr Callum Wilson is apaediatrician with advanced train-ing in genetics and metabolics basedat Auckland’s Starship Hospital.
He is part of a small team withtwo other doctors, two dieticians, two nurses and a team supportnurse that makes up the NationalMetabolic Service that run clinicson rare diseases throughout thecountry.
Dr Wilson says mitochondrialdisease has more than 100 variations— so while each is rare, it is morecommon as a group than manypeople know.
He says an issue is that manycases go undiagnosesd because thepatient does not have access to theexperts.
In adults especially it manifestsitself as ‘aging’ and the diseasecauses other complications such asstroke, heart or lung disease — thereal cause may go unknown.
Dr Wilson says mitochondria arefundamental to life and as theydeplete over time, cause us to age.
They are part of the carbon chain
system — converting food and oxy-gen into energy.
He says there is an enormousamount of research worldwide, because whoever discovers thesecret to slowing the rate ofdepletion will essentially have dis-covered the secret to ‘youth’.
Why it is worse for children, isthe lack of energy for growingorgans and muscles which leads tomore major complications.
Dr Wilson says a child’s braindevelops quickly and needs a lot ofenergy — so if they havemitochondrial disease it may meanslowed development or brain dam-age.
These are the worst cases — theones that people see and that aremost often fatal.
Dr Wilson believes in New Zea-land resources for more experts, who can give patients correct diag-nosis and treatment plans, is thebest outcome of raised awarenessand fundraising.
“We won’t necessarily be able tocure the worst cases, but we canhelp more people and give them abetter quality of life,” he says.

Car-less days returnWaikato people are being
encouraged to jump on a bus, enjoya cycle or walk to work, or car poolas a way to celebrate World CarFree Day next week.
As a thank you to people who optto travel on any of WaikatoRegional Council’s bus servicesduring a five-day car free pro-motion from 22-26 September, pas-sengers could win one of 10 $50BUSIT cards.
Monday, September 22 marksWorld Car Free Day, which wasestablished in 2000 as a grassrootsmovement to promote alternativesto travelling by car and reduce theimpact on the natural environ-ment.
“Walk, cycle, bus, formallycarpool with others, or just catch aride with your husband, wife, neighbour or friend who is goingthe same way,” said the regionalcouncil’s business sustainabilityadvisor Anna D’Arcy.
“These are not only fun andeconomic ways to get around ourcity, but they also help to reducecongestion and vehicle emissions.”
Ms D’Arcy said every car freetrip helps.
“One full bus can mean morethan 40 less cars going throughyour neighbourhood. Even usingyour car just one day less each weekwill reduce your carbon footprintby one tonne of carbon dioxide ayear — that’s enough to fill atypical 25 metre swimming pooland takes 3.6 trees to offset.
“Whether it’s a one-way orreturn trip or your five-day-a-weekcommute, going car free orcarpooling is a realistic option formany people in the region,” shesaid.
The regional council’s BUSITnetwork connects regional areaslike Te Awamutu, Cambridge, Pae-roa, Te Aroha, Morrinsville, Rag-lan, Ngaruawahia and Huntly with
Hamilton. Satellite services also run insome other regional centres, includingTaupo.
“In Hamilton, we have almost 1000stops and 26 bus routes connecting mostsuburbs to Hamilton’s city centre.
“So, if you haven’t hopped on boardone of our bus services previously, thisis a good week to give it a go,” Ms D’Arcysaid.

Te Awamutu College made animpressive debut on the lacrossescene this year.
The College team showed theyhad quickly picked up the skillsrequired, winning the B league ofthe Waikato Secondary Schools’competition.
Te Awamutu comfortably beatCambridge High School 7-2 in thefinal at Cambridge.
Coach Amanda Steel says onlyone of the Te Awamutu girls hadplayed before, so it was a greatresult for the team.
“They improved hugely overthe year and put in the hard yardsto fight their way to the top.
“Lacrosse is growing in popu-larity in the Waikato and playersparticularly enjoy the contactaspect of the sport.”
Even more exciting for the TeAwamutu students was that six ofthe players were selected forWaikato teams.
Jamila Milne and LilyHeywood were named in theWaikato Women’s U15 lacrosseteam, while Megan Foulkes,Sophie Ward, Laura Hilhorst andEmma King were named for theWaikato Women’s U18 team.
The U15 lacrosse team domin-ated the New Zealand Nationalsover the weekend, beating Auck-land A 11-3 in the final.
The team is now preparing forthe Australian Nationals in Perthon September 26, after beinginvited as guests.
The U18 team plays in thenationals this weekend.
LACROSSEMany readers won’t be famil-
iar with lacrosse — but it is one ofNew Zealand’s fastest growing
sports.Lacrosse is played with sticks
that have heads at the endcovered by mesh nets.
Players pass a hard rubberball to each other, and try to‘check’ the ball out of opponents’sticks, to score goals.
Men wear pads, mouthguardsand helmets, and are allowed tobody check each other.
Women can only check sticksand wear fewer pieces of protec-tive equipment.
The sport began as ‘stickball’,
a native American Indian contestplayed by tribal warriors fortraining, recreation and religiousreasons.
Missionaries in the 1630s werethe first Europeans to see thegame being played.
One of them, Canadian Jeande Brebeuf, wrote about the gameand it was he who the named it‘lacrosse’.
As a result, interest in thegame began to develop in Canada.
In 1867 exhibition games wereplayed in England and women’s
lacrosse was introduced at the St.Leonards School in Scotland in1890.
As early as 1885 lacrosse wasbeing played in New Zealand.
However, the arrival of WWIand the dominance of rugby asNew Zealand’s most popular con-tact sport took over.
Over the last decade, lacrossehas been developed in schools.
Today over 1000 school chil-dren around New Zealand arelearning and playing the sport, orits modified version, ‘modcrosse’.

number of volunteer hours put in by alarge number of people that keep ourwonderful community going.
At our last Community board meetingwe heard that contact has been madewith Waipa Networks with a request forthe lighting to be on 24 hours seven daysa week in the Stirling Sports alleyway. Afurther update will be available nextmonth.
Jo Ireland, manager communityrelationships, reported that the firstphase of the Pre-Consultation CampaignEngagement Strategy, has appeared innewspapers and conversations havestarted on the website facebook page.
This big title simply means that aneffort is being made to keep our com-munity informed about Waipa issuesand encourage thinking and feedback.
Concern has been expressed about thecost of installing and removing the flagsthat adorn our town.
It costs approximately $1500 to installand remove each batch of street flags.
Alternative options are being consid-ered for a pulley system to be used forraising and lowering the flags whichhave a locking mechanism to preventvandalism.
Council is also considering a betterquality of flag which will last longer.
Tony Roxburgh has advised that parkseats will be installed at Lake Ngarotoonce the work to relocate parts of thetrack has been completed.
The Community Board has decided torecommend that Council staff investi-gate and implement angle parking onpart of the even-numbered side of RickitRoad to enable the number of parkingspaces to be increased.
You are welcome at our CommunityBoard meetings.
They are held on the second Tuesdayof the month at the Council Chambers,Bank Street at 6pm.

ENGAGED
GREY!GOING
Waipa is ageing. In 30 years’ time more than a third of us will be 65 or older. It's a demographic shift that will change the face of our communities. Some changes are easy to predict (more retirement villages, fewer pre-school centres). Others require a bit more imagination.
Will the seniors of tomorrow be moreactive than today’s? What recreation amenities will they need? With more people on fixed incomes, how will the retail sector adapt? What will it mean for healthcare facilities and house prices? Will our towns need to be redesigned for more pedestrians and mobility devices? And what will we need to do to ensure working-age people continue to live, work – and move – here?
C’mon Waipa. Share your thoughts. Because it’s our future we’re talking about.
Visit our Facebook page, TAKE THE 5 MINUTE SURVEY and share your thoughts on the future of Waipa. You don’t need to be a facebook user – anyone can do it. Or write to this newspaper with your ideas.

COUNCIL staffers Wayne Green (left) and Benjamin Hemilaunch the ice-cream cart/mobile chat station in Te Awamutu.
Waipa DistrictCouncil staff aretaking to the streetsto encourage peopleto get involved incouncil business.
Last month thecouncil launched‘Let’s Get Engaged’,a campaign aimed atensuring more andnew voices wereheard about whatWaipa people wantfor their district. The campaign isbeing run online viaCouncil’s facebookpage and is alsobeing supported bylocal newspapers.
Now it’s beingtaken directly to thecommunity so thatas many people aspossible have theirsay before draft pro-posals are includedin a 10-Year Plan. The plan will helpshape the district forthe next decade andbeyond and willdetermine what isand isn’t paid for. Itwill go out for for-mal consultation inMarch 2015.
Over the next fewweeks/months, staffwill be at key com-munity eventshanding out mater-ial and urgingpeople to getinvolved.
A second-handice-cream cart hasbeen converted intoa mobile chat

manager Jo Ireland said thecouncil knew that not everyonewanted to use social media oreven go online. While somepeople were keen on sharingtheir views via local newspapersfor example, others weren’t.
“That doesn’t mean peopledon’t want to have their say;they might just want to do it in adifferent way and this is just oneway. There are others planned,”she said.
“Over the next few months, councillors will be making somecritical decisions about issueslike water and what sort ofdiscretionary activities thecouncil may, or may not, fundover the next decade. But coun-
cillors are not mind-readers.Elected members need to knowwhat Waipa people both wantand are prepared to pay for sothey can make right decisionsfor all of us.”

Montessori centre open day

MONTESSORI Little Hands pre-school manager Chris FitzPatrick and teacherTania Christensen.
BY CATHY ASPLIN
Rutherford House has been given anew lease of life after standing emptyfor several years.
The former retirement home is now aMontessori pre-school ‘Little Hands’,which is having an open day on Sunday(10am — 4pm).
Manager Chris FitzPatrick andteacher Tania Christensen say theywere initially looking for land in TeAwamutu to build a new centre, but theRutherford Street property wassuggested for viewing.
Miss Christensen says they wereblown away by the historic home.
“We just thought ‘wow’ this is fantas-tic. Even though it was mostly emptyand looking unloved at the time, thehouse had a great feeling and a realsoul.”
Mr FitzPatrick says RutherfordHouse was in a run-down state, but ithad essentially been left set up as a resthome in the hopes it could be sold.
“So it has taken quite a bit of work toclean it up and reconfigure it as a pre-school.
“The building has lovely features andbeautiful native timbers. We haverecycled wood from sections taken out ofthe building, with the timber anddrawers being used for shelving andstorage.
“We have received tremendous sup-port from our neighbours while renovat-ing the property.
“So we would like to take this oppor-tunity to thank them and look forward togiving back to the community.”
Miss Christensen says Montessorischools follow the teachings of founderMaria Montessori.
“Montessori education revolvesaround the saying ‘follow the child’ isaccessible for everyone.”
“We have one of her sayings framed inour foyer ‘Hands are the instruments of aman’s intelligence’.
“It is education where children havehands-on experiences to explore theirworld and develop at their own pace.
“The idea is to ignite the flame to learnand create life-long learners.”
Miss Christensen was previously ahead teacher at a Montessori school inHamilton.
She has a real passion for education, having taught for over 20 years at schoolsboth in New Zealand and in Switzerland.
Montessori Little Hands takes chil-dren from 18 months to six years old.
The centre has an under-three and anover-three area with furniture and
resources specifically catering for thosechildren.
“We work in seven subject areas —these range from languages and maths tocultural and outdoor environment.
“We also believe the outdoor environ-ment is as important as the indoor. Sopart of the enrolment scheme is to plant atree on their first day and to continue tocare for it.”

YOUR LOCAL WAIPA CONTRACTOR
Making themost of yDesigners have been
describing gardens asoutdoor rooms for
decades.Great US landscape architect
Thomas Church stronglyadvocated outdoor living in ourgardens, but even he would havebeen flabbergasted by the extentto which we’re now embracingthis idea.
We’re not only relaxing, entertaining, playing, cooking andeating outdoors, we’re alsoworking, listening to music, bathing, meditating, sleeping andexercising there, too.
After all, if you can do thesethings inside, why not outside aswell?
Leaving the TV and computerroom is no bad thing for any of us,particularly children, but how dowe create outdoor rooms largeenough for so many activitieswhen gardens are so muchsmaller these days?
Start as you would with anyindoor room, with a wish-list.
Working out the things youabsolutely must have in youroutdoor room will give you a clearidea of the amount of space you’llneed, as well as materials, furniture, appliances anddecorative items.
When space is tight you may
have to be flexible in yourplanning.
For instance, if you’re keen tohave an outdoor fireplace, could italso be used for screening, seating and storage? If you’re asunlover, but your spouse is not, some form of flexible sunshademight be the ticket, one withelectronic louvres or a retractablefunction.
Outdoor rooms should, astheir name suggests, combine thefreedom and openness of naturewith the shelter and cosiness of aroom.
Finding the right balancebetween the two is key to yourenjoyment.
Rooms that are thoroughfaresare never relaxing spaces to bein, whether they are inside thehouse or out. Is there a space inyour garden that’s accessible yetaway from the main circulationroutes?
Think also about sun, shade, wind exposure, traffic noise andfumes — will you need some formof screening for these?
To create the same sense ofintimacy you find in a room, anoutdoor space needs to beenclosed on at least two sidesand ideally from above as well.
Incorporate existing structuressuch as the walls of the house,
garage or shed or garden wallsand fences if budgets are tight.
You can then attachlightweight screens (eg, meshfabric, steel mesh, trellis, bamboo, brushwood) to the moresolid structures, or use planting

your outdoor ‘rooms’
such as hedges or tall flaxes.Overhead shelter structures
come in many different forms:pergolas, gazebos, shade sails, perhaps just a DIY frame coveredin saris or manuka branches.
If you like looking at the sky or
want the sun to penetrate, consider a semi-transparent ‘roof’such as trellis, brushwood orbamboo.
Some form of opaque screento block views from above is agood idea in spaces that are
overlooked by taller buildings andusing waterproof materials toshelter your outdoor room fromthe rain will allow you to use itmuch more.
Alfresco dining Most likelyyour outdoor room wish list willinclude cooking facilities whetherit’s a traditional barbecue, pizzaoven or flash rotisserie.
Foodies often go for a multi-functional outdoor diningexperience with, say, a pizzaoven, lamb rotisserie, smoker andbuilt-in barbecue but this requiresplenty of space and money.
Unless you’re really skilled inspatial planning you might alsoneed a professional landscapedesigner to point you in the rightdirection when it comes tochoosing appliances andselecting the best position forthem.
As well as cooking facilitiesthink about how many peopleyou’ll normally be feeding andwhether they’ll all be sitting at atable or balancing their plates ontheir knees.
An eight-seater outdoor tablewith space to move around thetable comfortably needs an areaof at least 4m x7m with barbecue, bench, sink and other foodpreparation facilities requiringeven more space.

OUTDOOR LIVING16 Te Awamutu Courier Thursday, September 18, 2014
Choosing best surfaces for a small gardenWhen there’s very little outdoor space,
choosing the best material to cover itshould be a no-brainer, right? Not
true.It can actually be harder to select paving or
decking for small gardens than for largeroutdoor spaces.
With less to see in a garden, attentionnaturally focuses more intently on thoseelements that do exist, whether they're pavers, plants or water features.
What you put in it therefore has to lookgood and function well all year round.
These criteria make some of the options forground surfaces in small gardens less work-able than others.
Living floors such as lawns andgroundcovers need a lot of TLC to look theirbest and are generally not robust enough foreither outdoor living or circulation routesthrough the garden.
These areas need some form of hardsurface, whether it be paving or decking, nomatter what size the garden.
A hard surface is essential for paths, driveways, car parking, spa areas and swim-ming pool surrounds. In small gardens suchareas may be multi-purpose with the drivewaydoubling as a front path and the pool terracealso the barbecue space.
When considering materials, cost is import-ant but also think about durability, ease ofinstallation and maintenance. Is the concretethick enough for cars and pedestrians?
Will chlorine affect the pavers and will theyneed to be sealed to protect against staining
from barbecue grease, berries, or birds? If your garden is shady, will decking be
slippery during winter? On sloping sites, timber decks are one of
the best and most economic options forcreating level areas without the expensiveearthworks you'd need for a paved terrace.
Timber is also very versatile, with boardscoming in various widths, able to be painted orstained a range of colours and laid in differentdirections.
If you want to make a narrow garden lookwider, lay decking timbers on the diagonal oracross the width of the site so the eye is takento the boundaries, making it feel wider.
Do the opposite with a short garden andrun decking along its length, which will makethe garden seem longer. This same principleworks with other materials such as brick orpavers.
Another point to consider with sloping sitesis the need for steps to connect different areas.
If you're planning to use recycled brick ortimber sleepers for steps it's a good idea tocontinue these materials into terraces andother outdoor living areas. It's essential insmall gardens to reinforce visual connectionsbetween different spaces as much as you can.
Unless you're a really skilled designer it'salways wise to keep the number of materialsand patterns you use in a garden to aminimum.
In small outdoor spaces it's pretty much agiven that simplicity rules.
When choosing hard paving take your cuesfrom what's already there, the external mater-ials of the house perhaps or the boundarystructures.
If they're both concrete, for instance, youcould use concrete flagstones with a differentsurface texture.
If there's an existing timber deck, eitherextend that or maybe use timber inserts withina new area of poured concrete.
Above all, your ground surface materialsshould reinforce the style of your garden. Theground plane is a very dominant element, particularly in small gardens, and its materialswill have a significant effect on the overall lookof the space.
Honed concrete aggregate slabs, terrazzopaving or sandstone are ideal for minimalistcourtyards whereas recycled bricks or loosegravel suit cottage gardens.
Timber decks work with most styles, withperhaps a dark stain for a contemporary look,or the wood left to weather naturally in informalcountry and coastal gardens.

Te Awamutu owner LizPollard got the perfect getwell tonic when Queen'sRose maintained her finer e c o r d w i t h a n o t h e rrecent win.
Queen’s Rose took outthe Rating 85 Benchmarkover 1200m on PakurangaHunt Day at Ellerslie withv e t e r a n j o c k e y N o e lHarris aboard.
“I had a hip operationand started out the racewith two crutches but bythe time it had finishedand Queen's Rose had wonI was down to one crutchas I had tossed the other
one away with excite-ment,” says Pollard.
“It was pretty excitingbecause I bred and ownher (Queen's Rose) and shehas now won five races.”
Pollard is the daughterof long time Waipa RacingClub committeeman JoePollard who raced manytop-class horses from thesame family.
Winners from the Rosefamily included group oneequivalent winners Fear-less Fox, Golden Galleon,Najimi, Rose Of Summer,Quite Able and Ziema.Through the 70s and 80sthey bred top horses likeH a y m a k e r ( V i c t o r i aD e r b y ) a n d M i n u e t t o(Rawson Stakes), and Liz
is determined to continuethe tradition.
“I have been criticisedby a lot of breeders whosaid that you want tointroduce some new bloodbut I wanted to stick to thisfamily, and it seems tocome up with the goods,”she says.
“It only needs to comeup with a couple of goodhorses and it ’s awayagain.”
Queen's Rose is byO’Reilly from the well-performed mare RosettiBay who won the TaranakiBreeders' Stakes, a racewhich will also be on theprogramme for Queen'sRose at New Plymouthnext month.

Closure of Waikeria Prison Road
The map shows the prison road marked by a dotted line. We are installing barriers at each end of the road to improve safety and security at the prison. If you currently use the route as a through road, please select an alternative route. If you have reason to visit the prison, please enter by the prison entrance at the north end of the site, off Waikeria Road. We trust this does not cause you undue inconvenience and that you appreciate our intent to keep the prison site as safe and secure as possible.
Waikeria Prison Road will not be available for public use from the end of September 2014. The road is on prison land. This will affect you if you currently use the route as a through road, or if you visit the prison.
