Turner Industries marked the close of another solid year in 2018 having worked
more people than ever before in the history of the company. Our employees
met the daily challenges of working safely and professionally to perform a wide
array of services on many job sites across many geographic locations.
The opportunities we were fortunate enough to earn tested our safety and
operations personnel as well as our recruiting and workforce development
employees. I’m proud to say they not only met our expectations but exceeded
them in every way. As a result of their performance, Turner Industries is able
to continue making investments and innovations in our safety culture, our
workforce development initiatives and the communities in which we work.

A young engineer named Bert Turner buys
Nichols Construction Company out of
bankruptcy. The company specializes in
industrial construction, heavy equipment,
hauling, rigging and equipment rental. It
doesn’t take Turner long to realize that the
industrial construction industry is a series of
peaks and valleys. So, he begins to take steps to
ensure a steady stream of revenue, embarking
on industrial contract maintenance and other
services which fulfill the needs of his clients.
In 1968, he hires Roland Toups who currently
serves as Executive Chairman.
’60sMr. Turner begins to acquire
companies and add additional
services like scaffolding, as well
as continually expanding the
equipment fleet and buying bigger
cranes. These moves provide the
company with opportunities to
manage and control most of the
elements that make up construction,
maintenance and turnaround work.
’70sThe Turner group enters the
fabrication business, forming
International Piping Systems, and
introduces a pipe bending process
that revolutionizes the pipe
fabrication business in the United
States. The company participates
in many of the large industrial
construction projects being built in
the Gulf South at the time.
’80sIndustr ial specialty services
such as NDE and inspection
services, specialized welding, and
environmental remediation are
added to fill client needs as they
arise. Proprietary programs are
developed internally to better track
and manage work.
’90sThe early companies consolidate
into one entity—Turner Industries
Group, LLC—with four main business
lines: Construction; Maintenance &
Turnarounds; Pipe and Module Fabrication;
and Equipment and Specialty Services.
Five fabrication facilities located across
the Gulf South make Turner the largest
privately held fabricator in the United
States.
’00sThe Turner family has always reinvested
in the company in ways that promote new
and efficient operations for the benefit
of our clients. The modern era has been
no different as new Turner facilities
have been opened, new proprietary
technologies have been developed, and
new client services have been added.
TODAY
2018 Turner Industries opened a new facility in Pensacola, Florida. The new facility enables Turner to better service existing clients while expanding our reach eastward.
2018 A new office opened in Geismar, Louisiana. This new facility enables Turner to better service our clients in the Ascension Parish industrial corridor and nearby.
2018 A new building is completed at Turner’s modular yard in Port Allen, Louisiana. The new office will serve as the administrative headquarters as well as the yard staff’s office and meeting hub. The building will also house workspaces for clients overseeing their modular projects.
2017 A new facility opened in Freeport, Texas. The new facility will anchor our Freeport-based maintenance services and provide support for turnarounds, construction, inspection and specialty services.
2016 A new administrative office building opened in Paris, Texas.
2014 An equipment repair facility designed to maintain, service and perform repairs for over 2,000 pieces of equipment opened in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
2011 A new administrative office building opened in Pasadena, Texas.
2010 New personnel offices in Baton Rouge and Sulphur, Louisiana are able to process applicants and provide pre-employment screenings, physicals, pulmonary fitness tests, and OSHA and NCCER testing on site, providing a “one-stop employment shop” experience.

Looking back on 2018, I’m pleased to report our industry leading safety performance continued. This is a noteworthy accomplishment indeed, considering we worked more people and more work hours, in more geographic locations and with a greater diversity of work activities than ever before in the history of our company. This could have only been accomplished through the drive, commitment, determination and energy put forth by each Turner team member.
Through consistent application of our safety and health values and key initiatives such as our hand and finger injury elimination campaign, the implementation of a newly revised Lock-Tag-Verify process and the expansion of observation and intervention techniques, we continue to perform each work activity in a safe and successful manner.

The Shell Chemical Plant in Geismar, Louisiana completed their Tiger AO4
project, making that facility the largest alpha olefins producer in the world.
Turner Industries’ role as the primary construction contractor played a crucial
part in making this a reality.
Engineering News-Record (ENR) Texas & Louisiana awarded Turner the
“Excellence in Safety Award” for our work on the Shell Tiger AO4 Project. Judges
reviewed more than 60 entries, considering many factors in their decisions,
including a project’s overall safety program, the OSHA recordable incident
rate, the lost-time accident rate and total work hours on the job. ENR also
announced Turner Industries as one of their ‘2018 Best Projects’ winners for
the same project.

A key initiative in 2018 involved the expansion of Turner’s observation

In 2018, Turner Industries rolled out a pilot program allowing Job Safety
Analyses (JSAs) to be completed electronically on intrinsically safe tablets
in the field. The benefits of completing JSAs electronically versus manually
are many. First and foremost, the new approach improves safety through
increased team interaction and knowledge retention. It also allows for greater
accountability, better analytics, higher job efficiency, greater data integrity, and
improved planning, procedure and communication abilities. As a result, we
see an increased time on tools and a reduction in overhead costs. The built-in
artificial intelligence will allow us to retain institutional knowledge, automate
procedures and learn from our mistakes.
All JSAs completed will synchronize to a central location, greatly enhancing
the ability of the foreman to oversee crew efficiency and progress and make
immediate intervention possible should the need arise.

In our industry, employees are sometimes assigned to perform work on
systems that contain hazardous energy such as electrical, high temperature
fluids, or chemicals. To ensure safe practices around these systems, we
have developed an enhanced Lock-Tag-Verify process. The process includes
placing a lock-out device and tagging a certain piece of equipment to keep
the system at a zero-energy state and prevent the unexpected release of
stored energy. Work crew members then verify the system is de-energized
by physically verifying the correct isolation points were utilized and that
the isolation prevents re-energization.
In 2018, our Lock-Tag-Verify process was updated to include a checklist as an
added layer of protection. The checklist is utilized by our employees as a check
and balance behind operations to ensure that a process system they are going
to work on is prepared and locked out, which will eliminate their chances of
exposure. Most sites use a manual list, but a digital solution is being pursued by
our IT group and has been tested at some of our work sites with great success.

Hand and finger-related injuries are among the most common injuries in our
industry. In 2018, our corporate safety department continued their hand safety
campaign, focusing on machine-driven material handling and correct tool usage.
Removing the use of hands from a task drastically reduces, and in some cases
even eliminates, the risk of injury.

In 2018, Turner Industries Executive Chairman Roland Toups marked
50 years of leadership at Turner Industries. Few people work for the
same company for 50 years, let alone serve in leadership roles that long.
But Toups’ leadership has not been contained just within the walls of Turner
Industries. It has been far-reaching and deeply passionate. He is a true believer
in living one’s life by The Golden Rule—treating others as you would wish to be
treated. He also exemplifies the term “servant leadership,” a philosophy and set
of practices that enriches the lives of individuals, builds better organizations and
ultimately creates a more just and caring world. Toups’ leadership approach has
always been to lead by example. He has contributed his time and expertise to
countless industry and civic organizations, both locally and nationally.
The result of Toups’ example is a legion of Turner employees who wish not only
to improve their own lives, but also the lives of others. Whether by hands-on
volunteer projects, donations, or the improvement or building of new facilities,
our goal is to be a positive force, enriching the communities in which we work.

Turner employees continuously invest their time and expertise aiding in civic efforts. In 2018,
Turner Industries’ Director of Benefits Dan Burke was named to the Executive Committee for
the Louisiana Governor’s ‘Taking Aim at Cancer’ initiative. The objective of the initiative is to
improve cancer outcomes in Louisiana by expanding residents’ access to cancer prevention,

Burke was also elected to the Board of Directors for the Houston Business Coalition on
Health (HBCH). HBCH is a non-profit organization formed in 2013 in an effort to combine
the former Houston Wellness Association and Houston Business Group on Health. It is an
employer-centric organization that allows for the sharing of evidence-based strategies and
practices to assist employers with healthcare and benefits.
‘Taking Aim Against Cancer’
Facing cancer is difficult at best, and having to travel for treatment can make it even more
difficult. To aid those traveling for cancer treatment, Turner Industries supported the
American Cancer Society CEOs Against Cancer – Gulf Coast Chapter’s ‘10,000 Nights of

Even with many well-paying job opportunities available, our industry continues
to encounter obstacles when it comes to attracting new employees into skilled
crafts and related jobs. The changing demographics of today’s workforce, as
well as the ebb and flow of projects in different geographic areas, can add
to the challenge of filling these positions. Successful companies find ways to
overcome these difficulties by creating new workforce development programs
and expanding on existing programs that are proven to work.
For over 55 years, Turner Industries has provided trained, skilled craft labor to
our clients by making major commitments to strategy, funding and instruction,
both in-house and to our industry as a whole. We know it is people who make

Construction Education and Research (NCCER) Board of Trustees, and Turner’s
Training Manager Raymond Neck holds a seat on both the NCCER Workforce
Development Committee and the Craft Assessment Committee.
On local levels, representatives of Turner Industries serve in various roles on
workforce development advisory councils, community partnership efforts,
and ABC Chapter boards. Turner also works with local high schools, providing
materials as well as guidance and subject matter experts. We attend career
fairs and serve as judges in local and national craft competitions.
One example of a local initiative we support is the North Baton Rouge Industrial
Training Initiative, which offers skilled craft training and aims to produce job-
ready graduates—some already hired by Turner and by our clients.

While skilled craft training is still a very important part of our industry,
arming our employees with the latest technology available ensures they will
perform their jobs to the best of their abilities. Adding new technologies
such as drones, robots, and intrinsically safe iPads loaded with the latest
software for use in the field improves and expands our service delivery, and
also attracts new employees to the industry. But these efforts are to no avail
unless time is taken to train employees in the use of these technologies.
In 2018, Turner took an active approach to investing in new technologies
including exclusive distribution rights to Inductosense® Corrosion Monitoring
systems in the U.S. This technology is cutting-edge in corrosion testing, enabled
by the digitization of non-destructive examinations and trained employees to
provide the service.

In 2018 Turner Industries focused, in part, on upgrade
testing and training for current employees, making it easier
for them to improve their current skills and qualify for
advancement. Another focus was to ensure all mobile crane
operators upgraded their credentials to be in compliance
with the new 2018 OSHA crane operator requirements.
CraftTrax®, our proprietary personnel software, underwent
an upgrade making it possible for Turner to officially set a
new standard when it comes to labor and requisitioning
systems. The enhancements mean Turner can now deliver
the right people to jobsites faster, while satisfying contract
provisions in a more efficient manner.

As in years past, Turner Industries participated in Associated Builders and
Contractors’ (ABC) Build Your Future event in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. This
event educates high school students about career opportunities in the
construction industry.
This year, the traditional three-day event had a new winning concept: 47
industry partners and over 750 students in one location—all in one day. Unlike
in previous years where students were taken in groups to different stations
demonstrating specific crafts, this event was set up like a trade show, allowing
the students to choose what they wanted to learn more about, pick up some
handouts along the way and chat with industry subject matter experts.
In addition to exhibiting some of our equipment and talking about our services
and career opportunities, Turner brought our drone group, which had the
students “buzzing” to say the least.

It has been an amazing experience to watch these young individuals work so hard to build their future.
Turner Industries and ABC Lake Charles, Pelican Chapter partnered with the
Beauregard Parish School Board and interviewed 32 high school candidates for
a 4-week summer welding camp held at Singer High School. There were only 16
available spots, so in addition to being interviewed, candidates were required to
create a résumé, fill out a mock application, and be currently enrolled in the ABC
welding program. Once the camp began, the students were graded not only on
their welding skills, but also time, attendance, and attitude. An AWS inspector
was brought in from New Orleans to grade and inspect their final welds.

Turner Industries also participated in Associated Builders and Contractors
and the Construction and Maintenance Education Foundation Industrial
Contractor Committee’s first “Ready for Industry” Boot Camp in Houston,
Texas. The three-and-a-half-day boot camp was created to assist individuals
seeking a pathway to the industry.
Class sessions were held each day providing information on the requirements
necessary for success in the industry. Turner hosted a session covering industry
expectations of an industrial helper. Other sessions offered discussed the
following topics: expectations of industry, tool demonstration and verifications,
fire watch, hole watch and signal training. Soft skills such as financial
management, resume writing, and a discussion on how to get and keep a job
were covered during the camp. A “Ready for Industry” job fair was also held
where participants could meet other industry leaders and discuss career options.
