TripleCoatings3®
The Open Source Coating Family
T he most innovative sector at the mo-ment is undoubtedly the IT indu-
stry. It is launching new products at avery rapid pace. Two companies, Appleand Google, whose company policiescouldn't be more different, are currentlybattling for leadership in the sector [1].
"Innovation is when the customeropens his wallet [2]" - says Steve Jobs, the brilliant CEO of Apple. At his com-pany, everything is directed according tohis intentions:– The very often groundbreaking new
products originate from his idea tank, which are then marketed in emotio-nally-charged campaigns.
– Apple works according to an extremehierarchy and strict, central guide-lines and controls.
– The customer is presented with a self-contained product range, in which hecan move extremely reliably and con-fidently after just a brief familiarizationperiod.
– An absolute policy of high pricing forhardware and software is pursued foreach update to the new version. Mo-ney is demanded even from the deve-lopers in order to be allowed to workon the Apple platform.
The prodigies, Google founders LarryPage and Sergey Brin, give their en-gineers and users extremely generous"freedom to work":– The employees are always strongly
encouraged to search for new ideasand not to be afraid to take risks.
– The engineers define their own taskspartly by themselves and should actproject-oriented with a great deal ofself-supervision and self-responsi-bility.
– The products are Open Source so that they can be transported onto variousplatforms. (According to the motto:
Everybody knows what's best for themselves.)
– All services and programs are free of charge so that the products can be dis-tributed and spread rapidly.
The situation is very similar on thetool-coatings' market.
The market leaders focusing on jobcoating services disclose hardly any in-formation about the coatings:– They remain silent regarding compo-sition and coating structures.
What is innovation?Innovation is "creating
something new" inunspecified terms of new
ideas, inventions, and theireconomical implementation.

of PVD Coatings.
– The physical properties are only described in terms of standard values.
– When acquiring a coating plant, • the coating recipes are frozen and
cannot be changed by the user, • whereby the recipes represent a
significant cost item.
The TripleCoatings3® are in strong contrast to this:– The compositions and stoichiometry
(coating structure) are disclosed andthe effects of the individual "compo-nents and doping elements" describedin detail (figure 1).
– The users receive measured values anddiagrams on the coatings they areusing.
– The coating recipes (Open Source) canbe changed by the users (According tothe motto: Everyone knows what's bestfor themselves).
– The standard recipes of the Nano-composite-TripleCoatings3® (nACo3®
and nACRo3®) are "core components"of the PLATIT plants, and are thusfree of charge for the users.
1.What are TripleCoatings3®?TripleCoatings3® represent the very
pinnacle of high-performance coatings ofPVD technology. They are combinationsof conventional and Nanocomposite coa-tings [3] - [6]:– The coatings are always started with
an adhesive layer that is usually deposited from non-alloyed targets (Ti
