Low employee literacy and numeracy skills (including low levels of English language) can undermine business’ efforts to improve performance and productivity. About 40 percent of people in the workforce do not have sufficient literacy and numeracy skills to function well in a knowledge society and information economy.

Workplace literacy is the literacy, language and numeracy skills employees need to effectively carry out their roles in the workplace.
