FINDING THE PROBLEMCurrent consumer printers on the market are designed to fit in an office environment but none seem to be designed for the home.

LIVING ROOM KITCHEN
LOCATION LOCATION LOCATIONWhere, when, and why were some of the questions I asked. It become not about the printer itself but where to get the prints. Exploring the kitchen for recipes, living room because of its accessibility for everyone in the household, and bedroom for its ease, entry way for convenients.

MOKU HOME PRINTERMokuzai is the Japanese word for wood for building. I was influenced by the Eames bent wood lamination process. I also felt that the wood added a lot to making the printer look warmer for the home rather then cold plastic.

DESIGNING FOR A MODERN KITCHENI wanted to design a chair with a very clean modern style with something a little bit different than your average chair.
TOMMY LOTH INDUSTRIAL DESIGN
18
[email protected] 408 807 8585
19
TRIAL AND ERRORThe biggest problem with my design is that the chair is on 2 legs rather then 4 which causes a big problem with structure. I found a solution in adding support bars but aesthetically they looked very stuck on. I added an additional loop in the back to support the structure from twisting which also relates to the foot rest of the bar stool.

MATERIALS AND PROCESSBent wood lamination and steel rod were the materials and processes I chose to use because I was drawn to the light and linear aesthetics.

EXPLORATIONI made models out of clay and foam to see what types of shapes I could make. Through making various combinations I saw that they sometimes related to certain objects like a belt sander.

29
RECTILINEARWith this project I explored the relationship between dominant, subdominant and subordinate forms. I wanted to create a very certical piece with very little horizontal direction.

3D EXPLORATIONI found myself making very flame like shapes but I ended up taking inspiration from birds. I just tried a lot of different combonations of 2D shapes to see how they would look in 3D.
[email protected] 408 807 8585
33
CURVILINEARWith this assignment we explored the relationship of two 2D shapes coming together to make a 3D form. I wanted to create something with very soft curves and break away from making it look like it came out of a 4x4 piece of wood.

FLAT PACK CONTRAINTSWith this assignment we were only allowed one 4x8 ft sheet of plywood and the piece of furniture must ship flat. I tried to use as much of the material as I could without waste.

ASPIRATIONSI wanted to design a flashlight that would match the aesthetics of outdoor gear. I looked at camping, backpacking, and hiking products.
TOMMY LOTH INDUSTRIAL DESIGN
48
2D EXPLORATIONI explored different types of aesthetics to fit what I wanted to do with my flashight. I ended up going with a multi texture, multi color theme to fit with the rugged outdoor environment.

3D EXPLORATIONThrough 3D mock ups I explored the different ergonomics and scale for my flashlight.

MOUNTAIN TREK FLASHLIGHTI designed this flashlight to have a lot of forward direction and a very fast aesthetic. I chose a textured finish to make it rugged and grippy. The dark green color was chosen to fit in to camping, hiking, and backinging activities.

3D EXPLORATION & CONSTRAINTSWe had to design around a cargo space in the center of the car and a c02 cartridge that would fit into the rear. Initially I took inspiration from jets and insects.

ROCKET CARMy final design is something that resembles a slug. I wanted to create a feeling of turning or sliding while the car sits still so all of the wheels sit at an angle including the car itself.

JACK HANDLE REDESIGNMy group saw an opportunity to design something that hasn’t really changed for a really long time. We chose the jack handle. I worked in a tire shop so I’ve had 5 years of experience using a floor jack, which also motivated me to innovate.

WHERE IT HURTSAfter a long time of using the jack you start to feel pain in the middle of your hand. It also doesn’t help that all the other tools you use also cause pressure in that area. The torque wrench, tire bar, and jack all cause pressure in that region of the hand.
THIS IS WHERE HE HURTS
TOMMY LOTH INDUSTRIAL DESIGN
62
PHASE 1We looked at different ways it could press against your hand and some ways people could possibly hold it differently.
PHASE 2With phase two we used wood so that we could actually test these on a real jack. Our mock ups were too big and it made it hard to make the up stroke to pump again.
[email protected] 408 807 8585
63
PHASE 3Our final mock up ended up being a combination of all of the previous mock ups but in a smaller package to make it easier to lift up.

PROTOTYPE TESTINGWe did a survey to see what people liked best from our mock ups and to our suprise our addition to the jack was very well accepted among the group. Through the testing we got to see the different hand positions and body postures. Surveyors also spoke about transporting.

PAN+SKILLETI innovated by adding multiple uses for this pan and integrating a spout to easily pour out any liquids like oil. I optimized the end of life by changing the material to cast iron for it to be passed down from generation to generation.

COOKING AND FAMILYI chose to redesign a pan for my 100 year product because cooking and recipes are something that is passed down from generation to generation. I found that cast iron pans and skillets are something that people may inherit from their parents and relatives.
