Both sides have guaranteed toavoid the use of armed force or vio-

lence in the implementation of fish-eries laws, ani Perez. Its all rightto arrest violators, but there shouldbe no use of unnecessary force.

Steel, a manReview by Vives Anunciacion Man of S teel Directed by Zach Snyder

T HIS is not your fa-thers Supermanmovie. In a way, this isnt a Supermanmovie at all. Thats why its Man of Steel.

Man of S teel tells practically the same origin story of the boy from a dying planet sent toEarth to live as a human, excepthe grows up being more than just human. There are severaltweaks to this story, but essen-tially its the same Superman onits 75th anniversary this year.

What is new to this story isthat it shows Kal-El/Clark as theson of two parenthoods. Right

from the beginning, we areshown Kal-Els special birth, onethat his father Jor-El (RussellCrowe) believes has a specialpurpose that thechild must use when the timecomes.

But on Earth,Clark strugglesto contain thatpower withinhim because hisEarth father,Jonathan (KevinCostner) believesthat Earth isnt ready to accepta god-like alien in its midst, pe-riod.

This conflict of paternalmoralities is the overriding archof Man of Steel not coinciden-tally aimed at a Fathers Day crowd on its opening week.

Its a strong concept tellingthe story of Superman from theperspective of his two fathers.Maybe the intent was to estab-

lish who and what Supermanis when he finally decides whetherhe is the firstadoptive son of Earth, or the lastson of Krypton.

But of course, there must be vil-lains. In thiscase, they are led

by Kryptons military leaderGeneral Zod (wonderfully played by Michael Shannon) who wants Kal-El captured inoder to retrieve the DNA Codexand rebuild Krypton on Earth.

And this is where the moviefalters because it has a good

emotional story built aroundKal-Els/Clarks parents, andthen it has the generic block-buster maniacal antagonist bent

on destroying Earth. One-thirdgood movie, two-thirds slam-bang blockbuster. Director ZachSnyder (Watchmen, 300) re-tains his reputation of not beingable to hold a character-basedscreenplay intact without resort-ing to fireworks.

Its a pity that the good parts with his Earth and Krypton par-ents are relatively underwritten, except maybe Jor-El. I likeMartha Kents scenes (DianeLane), even though shes just your basic doting mother. Perry White (Lawrence Fishburne)and Supermans GF Lois (Amy Adams) have good repartee onthe Daily Planet, but theres notenough.

The film looks A-grade spec-tacular, aided by Hans Zimmersoccasionally soaring music. Butthat is whats lacking in Man of Steel. It doesnt soar, the emo-tions dont rocket to the heav-

ens. Its great when the emo-tions are down to (and on)Earth. But when Kal-El savesthe Earth, it just feels like a pro-

tracted eventuality delayed by endless Super-Sayyan smack-downs. Never once did we feelthat Superman was in real dan-ger.

Its okay as a reboot of a sto-ry were already familiar with.It lays the groundwork of estab-lishing the main characters andtheir interrelationships for theeventual sequel. Having set whoSuperman is in a world unsure whether he will abuse that om-nipotence or not (on America, selfishly), the sequel is set formore intense action and intrigu-ing new anti-heroes. Did yousee the LexCorp logo on thebuildings, and the Wayne logoon the satellite? Maybe youshould see the movie again.

Until then, well wait for theSuper to truly emerge in thenext Man of Steel edition.Meanwhile, welcome to theplanet, Kal-El.

Hwood stars pay tribute to dadsBy Ruben V. Nepales

HENRY Cavill, who has two dads in Man of SteelJor-El (Russell Crowe)and Jonathan Kent (Kevin Costner)talked about which one was more

like his father, ColinCavill, in real life:

They are like twofacets of my fatherspersonality. Thats why I enjoyed work-ing with them somuch. I have one side which said, Look af-ter yourself; donttake your own safety for granted. Thentheres the other side which said, Go out

there and do yourthing. Be proud of who you are. Thoseare two facets of my fathers character andmy own personality.

    RusselCrowe

Russell expressedgratitude to many people in his life who were father figures to

himespecially hisuncle, the late DavidCrowe , his grandfa-ther Stan Wemyssand father, AlexCrowe when he won the Oscar forBest Actor in 2000 forGladiator .

The people whostick in my mind asheroes are those whomake themselvesavailable to you when

[they dont] necessar-ily have to, Russellpointed out.

I had a great rela-tionship with my Un-cle David. When I was growing up, he was the principalfamily member who was supportive of mehaving these sort of unreasonable dreams

and expectations inlife. That list [of peo-ple who are my heroes] would bequite a long one.Theres a lot of peoplefrom sports and vari-ous arts whom I con-sider my heroes. I be-lieve in mentors andin aspirations.

    Smurfettes voice

Singer Katy Perry , who voices Smurfetteonce more in TheSmurfs 2 , told us thather dad, Keith Hud-son , inspired her hu-morous personality and style:

My father is acharacter. Hes whereI get my sense of hu-mor from. And my sense of style. He

used to wake me up[at] 7 oclock in themorning to go to es-tate or garage sales with him. He wouldgive me a dollar. I would buy things fora quarter or 50 cents. That was how I start-ed cultivating my own style.

    ZachGalifianakis

Speaking of hu-mor, heres Zach Gali-fianakis talking abouthis pa, Harry : My fa-ther is a very emo-tional Greek whocries at the drop of ahat. He showers us with love. I think I was a pretty goodson. I think I still am.I gave my dad $2 theother day.

Dito pa langmalalaman yung last twoteams na bubuo ng 16-nationfield of qualifiers.

    Ginanap ang Fiba draw two

Saturdays ago, at dahil walapang qualifiers from Southeast Asia, nagtalaga na lang nggroup assignments for SEA Team l and SEA Team 2.

    petisyon, but according to re-
