there in 1730 near a church, which washedaway in the flood of 1735. A cross still marksthis spot.
By 1776, there were still 27 families, totaling81 people, who were using the San Felipemission, but as floods changed the river’scourse, the fate of “Upper Bernalillo”changed too, constantly moving south, untilthe population shifted gradually to the eastside of the river to the site of present dayBernalillo.
But this was still not an easy place to live. From 1748 to 1771, almost four thousandSpanish and Pueblos were killed by Apaches,Navajos, and Comanches. In 1771, 170 peoplewere killed and seven thousand horses andmules stolen. In 1775, a major Comanche raidon Sandia Pueblo destroyed all crops andlivestock and killed 32 inhabitants. Thescourge of smallpox killed five thousandpueblo people and many Spanish in the1780s. It seemed there was no end to the ma-jor disasters the colony suffered.
Overgrazing was becoming a problem by1757 because there were 112 thousand sheepand sixteen thousand cattle plus seven thou-sand horses in the colony. Sheep became themedium of exchange, and, due to a lack ofcoinage, the barter system prevailed. The ef-fects of this problem have lasted to the pres-ent day. Ranchers traditionally raised sheeprather than cattle because nomadic raiderscould more easily drive cattle away andwhen attacked herders could scatter sheep toreduce losses. In 1779, Governor de Anza de-feated the Comanche, Cuerno Verde, andmade a treaty to stop the raids.
During the Colonial period, this was aclosed world with little outside contact. Spainand Mexico were too far away and had lostinterest because of the lack of discoveredwealth. The colony was a distinct drain onrevenues with little to show for it. Local lawtook precedent over the Law of the Indies, artwas replaced by crafts, and local custom pre-vailed. Church and state warred constantlyover control of the colony, with the Inquisi-tion being used as a tool to break the powerof the state.
All in all, it was a most hazardous two-hundred-year period for everyone. On theplus side, the Europeans introduced the useof metal tools and weapons.
