JOINING THE G7: DOES ITMAKE SENSE FOR INDIA?

US President Donald Trump’s pitch forinclusion of India, along with Russia,Australia and South Korea into G7 may notbe in India’s best interests. Here's why....

G7 REPRESENTSRICH ECONOMIESG7 has been a grouping ofthe richest, most industrialisednations, with the per capita in-come ranging from a little over$34,000 (for Italy) to almost$63,000 (for the US). India’s percapita income at a little over$2,000, places it in the ranks oflower middle income nations.

TRUMP’S TRAP? Becoming a G7 membercould also bolster Trump’s oft-repeated grouse that Indiadoesn’t deserve the developingcountry tag. In fact, earlier thisyear, the US, just ahead ofTrump’s visit to India, removedit from the list of developingcountries, citing its G20 mem-

bership and a share of morethan 0.5% of the global trade. The removal of developing na-tion tag by the US has also im-peded the negotiation of atrade deal between the twocountries. As a developingcountry, India got duty con-cessions worth $240 mn in 2018.

MORE POLITICS The G7’s focus is more onpolitical issues — case in point,Trump’s pitch for G7’s expan-sion does not include China, the world’s second largest econ-omy, which isn’t a surprise, giv-en his frosty relationship withBeijing. A G7 membershipcould open the doors to com-mentary on India’s domesticpolitics and bilateral relations, such as Jammu & Kashmir.

Amphibians are movingtowards higher latitudes at arate of around 39.7 feet ayear, while reptiles are mov-ing their habitats at the slow-er rate of around 21.3 feet on an annual basis.Insects, meanwhile — which can serve as a vector for manydiseases — were found to be headed poleward at a rate ofaround 18.5 kilometres per year. Experts warn that thesemigrations could see species riding an ‘escalator to extinction’ as their viable habitat ranges get limited.

According to researchers, the easing of lockdown restric-tions should be done in a way that provides all children withthe time and opportunity to play with peers, in and outsideof school, even while social distancing measures remain inplace. The social and emotional benefits of play and interac-tion with peers must be clearly communicated, alongsideguidance on the objective risks to children

An international teamof scientists hasanalysed all known

coronaviruses in Chinesebats and used genetic analy-sis to trace the likely originof the novel coronavirus tohorseshoe bats. In its report, the team also points to thegreat variety of these virus-es in southern and south-western China, and urge clos-er monitoring of bat virusesin the area. Greater efforts tochange human behaviour asways of decreasing thechances of future pandemicsis required, the report said.

REDUNDANT OFFER? India, along with the US, is already a member of G20, which is afar more representative club of global economy — with the 20nations representing “85% of global economic output, twothirds of the world's population, and 75% of internationaltrade”, according to an article carried by the WEF. That makesjoining G7 obsolete — a view expressed even by Trump, wholabelled the grouping as “outdated”. India may also need toremind itself that the G7 at the current juncture is a house divided, with the US pitted against the remaining six countries —UK, Canada, Germany, Italy, France and Japan — and which maynot serve India’s own interests well.
