This Week at Queen of All Saints
There are three points that I’d like to cover in today’s bulletin article. First, a brief view of the Gospel from
today’s Mass. I’d also like to talk about a priest who will be assigned to our community and about the Queen of All
Saints Endowment Fund.
In today’s Gospel we hear what seems to be a sharp criticism from Jesus regarding tradition. This may be
difficult to hear because as Catholics we love tradition. Our Church is over 2000 years old and has deep roots in
tradition. We, too, come from more than 2000 years of living tradition, but our roots reach even deeper. Our
traditions reach back into the customs of the Jewish people for thousands of years.
We view traditions as sacred moments in which the voice of God speaks through time and practice. It is
confusing for some Catholics when we hear Jesus condemning the tradition of the Jews. Many non-Catholic
communities criticize the Catholic Church for its reverence of tradition and will posit that Jesus did away with
tradition in favor of a type of liberating grace that does not need tradition. It is important to notice what Jesus
shares in the Scripture. Jesus does not condemn or abrogate tradition; he cautions against a religious adherence
to “human traditions.” It is important that we as Catholics distinguish between human tradition and Sacred
Tradition. Human traditions are customs that become codified over time both for the sake of nostalgia and
convenience. These human traditions are not sacred, and they do not demand a religious assent of faith. Sacred
Tradition is the Word of God and the Will of God manifested through the practices of the history of the Church.
We believe that Tradition is the voice of God informing his people through the authentic teaching of the Church
over time. Because Sacred Tradition comes from God, it cannot be ignored or laid aside without causing damage
to the faith.
To explain this further, the revelation of Jesus is made known to us through Sacred Tradition and Sacred
Scripture. Jesus is the fullness of the revelation of God to the human family and that Revelation comes to us in
two modes: Sacred Scripture (the Bible) and Sacred Tradition (authentic teaching of the Church). Human
tradition may change or be disregarded over time, but Sacred Tradition is the authentic voice of God speaking to
us about his love and salvation throughout the course of history. Catholics love Sacred Tradition because we love
the fullness of God’s Revelation to the world. Do not be confused about Jesus’ strong words regarding tradition.
He was speaking of a form of human tradition that was unnecessarily raised to the level of the divine. This is not
the type of tradition that we revere, but Sacred Tradition, as the authentic Revelation of God’s love to the world.
A second point is the news about a new priest. Beginning this week, Fr. Bob Sprott will be assigned as the
full-time associate pastor of Queen of All Saints and St. Mary parishes. He is a Franciscan who comes to us with a
desire to serve. I am very eager to welcome Fr. Bob who has a lifetime of experience in priestly ministry. I have
no doubt that you will welcome him with the same joyful enthusiasm with which you welcomed me. Fr. Bob,
welcome to the team!
For my third and final point, I’d like to share about our endowment and the Legacy Alive Weekend. The
endowment is a fund that can provide a way to support the future needs of our parish and school. This is not the
same as the Save Our Legacy Campaign which is focused on funding specific and immediate parish and school
needs. The primary ways of making a gift to the parish endowment are through a planned gift from your will or
estate, a direct gift during your lifetime or through the purchase of a commemorative brick. With the purchase of
each brick, over $100 goes to our parish endowment fund with the hope of providing financial support for the
parish and school well into the future. This weekend is called Legacy Alive Weekend to give you an opportunity to
learn how through planned giving to the Queen of All Saints Endowment Fund, you help ensure the continued
witness of Queen of All Saints Parish and keep your Legacy Alive.
There are so many great things happening here at our parish. Let us continue to thank God for this
beautiful community and his abundant care for each one of us.
Yours in Christ,
Fr. Dave

Christ the King Adoration Chapel
The Holy Eucharist, the Blessed Sacrament, is Jesus Himself. Jesus gave us the gift of His Body and Blood, the Blessed Sacrament, on the first Holy Thursday night. After that Last Supper, Jesus went with His friends to the Garden of Gethsemane. It was there that Jesus asked them, “Could you not watch one hour with Me?” (Mt 26:40). This is the same invitation that Jesus gives to us today. You’re invited to visit our Christ the King Adoration Chapel!

“This people honors me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me.”
God’s teachings can change us. This is evident by our words, but more importantly with how we treat one another with kindness, mercy, and understanding. Connecting to everyday life: As summer starts to wind down, and children return to school and normal routines resume again, are you ready to be someone who not only speaks the words of God, but also loves as God loves in the course of your daily life? Open the door of your heart to our Lord and begin to see the ways He will show you to for-give, to care, and to serve one another. Read more in the Impact newsletter at www.qas.org.
