History
What is IOT?
A network of physical objects that can interact with each other to share information and take action.
IoT is the network of physical objects-devices, vehicles, buildings and other items, embedded with electronics, software sensors and network connectivity that enables these objects to collect and exchange data.
So the thing, in the Internet of Things, can be any natural or man-made object that can be assigned an IP address and provided with the ability to transfer data over a network.
Architecture/Working
Sensor Layer
Lower Abstraction Layer.
Incorporated to measure physical quantities.
Interconnects the physical and digital world.
Collects and process the real time
information.
Gateway & Network Layer
Robust and High performance network infrastructure.
Supports the communication requirements for
latency, bandwidth or security.
Allows multiple organization to share and use the
same network independently.
Management Service Layer
Capturing of periodic sensory data.
Data Analytics (Extract relevant information from
massive amount of raw data).
Streaming Analytics (Process real time data).
Ensuring security and privacy of data.
Application Layer
Provides a user interface for using IoT.
Different applications of various sectors like
Transportation, Healthcare, Agriculture, Supply
chains, Government Retail etc.
Applications
Smart Home
Smart Cars
Smart Farms
E-Healthcare
Future Scenario 2020: 50 Billion Connected Things
6.6 objects will be connected with the Internet
for each person. IPv6’s huge increase in address space is an
important factor in the development of the Internet of Things.

Google’s ongoing IoT Projects Google Glass : Wearable computer Waze : An Intelligent GPS navigation and traffic management tool. Nest : Smart Thermostat and Smoke alarm. Open Automotive Alliance (OAA) : An android operating for automobiles. Brillo : An embedded OS that adds simplicity and speed of software development to the hardware of IoT.
Some Interesting Updates
The term “Internet of Things” was added in oxford dictionary in August, 2013. The term has been defined as : “A proposed development of the internet in which everyday objects have network connectivity, allowing them to send and receive data.” National Intelligence Council(NIC) U.S. listed IoT in the Six technologies with potential
impacts on U.S. interests out to 2025. “Shodan”, World’s first search engine that finds connected ‘Things’. For more: https://www.shodanhq.com IoT 2014, 4th International Conference of Internet of Things, was held on October,2014 at
Cambridge, MA.
Conclusion
The Internet of Things is closer to being implemented than the average person would think.
There is innumerable usefulness of IOT applications into all the domains including medical, manufacturing, industrial, transportation, education, governance, mining, habitat etc.
Most of the necessary technological advances needed for it have already been made, and some manufacturers and agencies have already begun implementing a small-scale version of it.
So…A New Era in the field of IoT has just begun and more to unleash.
