A two term congressman from Wisconsin, who in 1906 sponsored legislation to financescientificresearchintheAgriculturalExperimentStationsofUnitedStates.BornatVerona,NY (1850-1907), moved to Wisconsin with parents in 1851. Spent one year at AlbionAcademy and three years at University of Wisconsin. Engaged in farming on propertyadjoining city of Madison and built up profitable dairy and small fruit business. He wasa member of Wisconsin Assembly 1883-85, engaged during winters of ’87, ’88, ’89 inFarmersInstitutework,presidentofthestateDairymen’sAssnforthreeterms,secretaryofStateHorticulturalSocietyandmanyyearsmemberofStateBoardofAgriculture.HewasamemberofCongress1903-1907

Heoperated largefamily landholdings in IowaandColoradoaswellasDirectorandVice-PresidentofGroup21Feedlots,Inc.atSutherland,IA.HewaselectedDirectorandPresidentoftheIowaHerefordAssociation(1950-56),theAmericanHerefordAssociation(1959-65),andtheInternationalLivestockExposition(1960-74),andaDirectorof the National Livestock and Meat Board (1962-66). He was a member of the NationalCattlemen’s Association and an honorary member of Block and Bridle. Portrait hung in1970.

A native of Scotland, who in his early life immigrated to Woodford County, KY whereheboughttheestateknownasWoodburn.HerehepurchasedandbredStandardbredandThoroughbredhorsesandShorthorncattle.Lexington,thefamousThoroughbredstallion,waspurchasedfor$15,000andledthesirelistfrom1861through1877.Abdalla,theStandardbredstallion,andtheShorthorncow,DuchessofAirdrie,helpedtospreadthefameofWoodburn.Jerseys,Cotswolds,andSouthdownswereaddedatlaterdates.Hediedin1867.
ALLEN,LEWISF.
AnearlyShorthornbreederofBlackRock,NYwhoin1846editedandpublishedthefirstvolume of the Shorthorn Herdbook. The first volume was small and it was not until thesecondvolumewasissuedin1855thatthebreedersfromEasttoWestcametothesupportoftheHerdbookRegister.ThenewlyformedAmericanShorthornBreedersAssn.purchasedtheHerdbookfromAllenintheautumnof1882forthesumof$25,000. Since1883,thisHerdbookhasbeentheonlyoneofitskindinexistenceforthebreedandistitledtheAmericanShorthorn Breeders Association Herdbook. He authored standard books on beef cattlebreedersbeforetheCivilWar.

ExtensiveIllinoislandowner,livestockshipperandChicagofinancier.BornDutchessCo,NY(1828-1914)hetriedfarming.CattletradingforshipmenttoNewYorkgraduallytookhimfartherwestandtoChicago(1856).Hecontinuedbuying,raisingandsellinglivestock,settlinginPlattCo,IL.Atonetimeheownedmorethan40,000acresoffarmlandintheMidwest.TherewasnomarketinChicagosohecreatedoneamongChicago’spioneerbutchersandbecametheheadofacompanygatheringcattleandhogsfromhundredsoffarms.ThiswasthebeginningofChicago’spackingindustry.HewasamemberofthefirstboardofdirectorsoftheFirstNationalBankofChicago.Withthebank’slargeststockholder,JohnB.Sherman,heconceivedtheideaofestablishingtheUnionStockYards.Hediedin1914.

AprominentHoosierfarmer,livestockbreederandPresidentoftheInternational1951-55.BornatPinesFarm,WestPoint,IN(1889-1955).HeattendedPurdueUniversityandAmesAgricultureCollege.AwardedhonoraryDAgrdegreefromPurdue1949.HebredShropshiresheepandhadtheoldestherdofregisteredAngusinthestate.WithsonJessJr.,hefirstintroducedtheYorkshirehogbreedtotheUS.Aneighttermlegislatorand20yearIndianaPrisonBoardmember.AsarepresentativeoftheInternational,heandhiswifeElizabethhadapersonalaudience,highteaanddinnerwiththeKingandQueenofEnglandtodiscuss4-Handotheryouthorganizations.Aprominentspeakeratmanylivestockeventsnotedforhissharpwitandcausticbarbsattheidiosyncrasiesofpeopleeverywhere.AmemberofSigmaChifraternity.

By 1919Armourexceededonebilliondollarsofgrossincome.Hewasgreatlyinterestedinagriculturaleducationandsponsoredmanycollegescholarships.Hemadelargedonationstohospitalsandrelieffunds,supportedArmourInstitute.Hewasdirectorofseveralrailroadsandfinancialinstitutions. HerelinquishedcontrolofArmourin1923.HisMellodyFarmatLakeForestwasamagnificentcountryestate.Hediedin1927.

HeadofArmourPackingoperationsinKansasCity,aHerefordbreederandimporterofhighrepute.“Kirk”ArmourpurchasedtheC.M.Culbertson,Newman,IL,herdasafoundation,addedEnglishimportsof237and219headin1901.Althoughhechosenottoshowcattle,heiscreditedwithbuildingHerefordinfluenceincommercialbeefherdsintheWestandSouthwestwithlargenumbersofhisbullsgoingtosuchherdsasPrairieCattleCoinColoradoandMatadorintheTexasPanhandle.HewaspresidentoftheAmericanHerefordAssn.in1898whenthefirstNationalHerefordShow,predecessoroftheAmericanRoyal,washeld.HisremarkableleadershipinboththecommunityandindustrypromptedhiselectionasAHApresidentasecondterm.Hediedin1901attheageof47.

Founder of Armour and Co in Chicago. Born in 1832 at Stockbridge, NY of Scotch-Irishdescent. HetriedhishandwiththegoldrushinCaliforniabeforeasuccessfulventureinthegrainandcommissionbusiness.InpartnershipwithJohnPlankintonheembarkedinthepackingindustryinMilwaukeein1863.In1867heestablishedArmourandCoattheUnionStockYardsinChicago.Withthedevelopmentoftherefrigeratedrailroadcar,hebroughtfreshmeattoconsumersthousandsofmilesawayfromthecornbeltandplains. HealsofoundedArmourInstitutetogivetechnicaltrainingtounderprivilegedboys.Atthetimeofhisdeathin1901,heownedmoregrainelevatorsthananyotherhouseintheworld.ArmourandCoalsoemployedmorepeoplethananyotherconcernintheworld.Hediedin1901.

WhileonthefacultyattheUniversityofWisconsin,heinventedtheBabcockTestforbutterfatinmilk.Healsodiscoveredgalactoseandestablishedforhimselfaworldwidereputationforhis dairy research. Born in 1842 in Bridgewater, NY,he graduated from Tufts, studiedatCornellandreceivedPhDfromGoettingen,Germanyin1879.HebecameaninstructoratCornell,wenttotheNewYorkAgrExpStaatGeneva,thenontoWisconsin.InadditiontotheBabcocktestforbutterfat,hespearheadedmuchlivestockfeedresearchidentifyingearlyfindsonvitaminandmineraldeficiencies.Hespurnedpersonalgainandrefusedtopatenthismethodsandequipment.WhileatWisconsinhewasaffectionatelyknownas“theshybenefactorofmankind…thelaughingsaintofscience”.Hediedin1931.

Asafederalextensioncoordinator,hebegananorderlytransitionfrompurelysubjectiveappraisal to more objective means of commercial evaluation in the beef industry. HisleadershipwasresponsibleforthecreationoftheBeef ImprovementFederationin1968.AnOklahomanative (born1923),he receivedhisacademicdegree fromOklahomaA&MCollege.HisleadershipinintroducingandperfectinggeneticpredictionsofperformanceforbeefcattlewascarriedonwhileChairmanofAnimalScienceatNebraska,DeanofAgricultureat OSU, President ASAS, President Council of Agricultural Science and Technology andSeniorProgramOfficerforWinrockInternational.Hisabilitytocallforththecollectivebestasaleaderandtobealivestockdiplomathasearnedhimgreatrespectamongstockmenandscientistsalike.Portraithungin1986.HediedinLittleRock,ARin1993.

ThepatternforstockbreedinganditsartthatcreatedtheBritishbreedsoflivestockwassetbyBakewell(1725-1795).BornatDishley,Leicestershire,England,hestudiedtheanatomyofanimalswhenitwasarelativelyunknownsubject.AcountrygentlemanwhoearnedhisreputationasamanageroftheDishleyestate,succeedinghisfatherin1760.Hegatheredusefulstockfromextensivehorsebacktrips,weldedthemintoabreedbydeliberateandintensiveinbreedingtofixtype.HewasextremelysuccessfulwithLonghorncattle,Leicestersheep,ShirehorsesandtheSmallWhitepig.HisannualauctionscreatedgreatattentionandanaudiencewithGeorgeIII(FarmerGeorge).In1783heestablishedtheDishleySociety,forerunnerofbreedassociationstoprotectthepurityofstock.
BARCLAY,CAPTAIN
AlargelandholderofUry,ScotlandnearStonehaven,hewasrecognizedasoneofthemostcolorfulandsuccessfuloftheScottishShorthornbreeders,beginningin1822.Hewasthegreatestallaroundsportsmanofhisday,activeinthefoxhuntandprizering,performerwith courser and coach, and he bred a famous race of game fowls. He once won a betby walking 1000 miles in 1000 hours. His athletic achievements were his pride. He wasfinancierfortenantfarmersandwastheverycornerstoneoftheShorthornbreedfoundationinAberdeenshire.Hediedin1854.

Bornin1776atAydonCastle,Northumberland,England,thisgeniusforShorthornbreedingdominatedthebreedingofthesecattleforthenextcentury.Heusedinbreedingextensivelyandrecordedthemilkproductionofhiscows.ManyofhisfoundationanimalscarriedthebreedingofCharlesColling,particularlythesireBelvederewhogothimthemagnificentsire,DukeofNorthumberlandandtheshowherdthatplacedhimundisputedlyasBritain’spremierbreeder. Fromthatdayforwardtheherdvalueincreasedforhisfamily. In1873hisbest,Dutchess,brought$40,600and14headaveraged$18,750.Hediedin1849atKirklevington,hisestate,wherehespentthelast19yearsofhismasterfulcareer.

Founder of the College of Veterinary Medicine at Ohio State University, he was born inOldenburg,Germanyin1835.HewaseducatedattheleadinguniversitiesofEurope,bothatHanoverandBerlin,pursuingagriculturalandveterinarycourses.Inthelate60’shecametotheUnitedStates.HeworkedwiththeCommissionerofAgriculture(forerunneroftheFederalDepartmentofAgriculture)oncausesofthecattleplague,contagiouspleuro-pneumonia.HewasapioneerinthestudyofhogcholerafortheU.S.governmentandservedasprofessorof veterinary science at Iowa, Missouri, Kansas, and Illinois. He died at Columbus, OH in1906.
