Strathclyde Police launch Domestic Abuse Campaign

REGENERATION AGENCY PROVIDES JOB OPPORTUNITIES FOR LOCAL RESIDENTS

Residents of the East End of Glasgow and Rutherglen, aged between 16 and 25, are being given a unique opportunity to land a job at the Commonwealth Sports Arena and Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome which will open in the Dalmarnock area of the city in late 2012.

Thanks to a partnership between Clyde Gateway and Glasgow Life, young people living within the communities covered by Scotland’s biggest regeneration agency will be eligible to enter into a specially designed programme of training, the completion of which will guarantee an interview

for the position of Leisure Attendant at the new facility. The training programme will be delivered by Street League, a Glasgow-based organisation with a hugely successful track record of supporting young people and adults into employment or further education through sport.

George Redmond, chair of Glasgow Life and a Board member at Clyde Gateway said “Glasgow Life will begin managing the Commonwealth Sports Arena and the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome from this coming March and we will immediately begin the extensive preparations for its opening to the

public later in the year. “The new facility will be one

of the biggest and best indoor sports and leisure centres of its type in Europe and a showcase for the sports services we provide at Glasgow Life. While some of the experienced staff working there will transfer from some of our other centres across the city, we will be recruiting fifty-five new staff for a range of positions but predominantly Leisure Attendants.

“We have always said that part of the legacy from the construction of the new facility will be the jobs spin-off for local residents and this new programme

with Street League aims to help achieve this. It is tailored for people living in or around the Clyde Gateway communities of Bridgeton, Dalmarnock, Rutherglen and Toryglen and is a wonderful opportunity for young people who are currently unemployed to land a secure and well-paid job with future career prospects in sports and leisure.”

The Commonwealth Sports Arena and Velodrome complex is being built by Glasgow City Council who included specific clauses in the tendering process to create employment and business opportunities for local people and

companies.Councillor Gordon Matheson,

Leader of Glasgow City Council, said: “The companies involved in building the arena and velodrome have played a significant role in ensuring local people benefit from the work, not least with the number of apprentices places created.

“So I’m delighted that Glasgow Life, which will operate the venue on the council’s behalf, are continuing in partnership with Clyde Gateway to ensure there are benefits to the local community through this project.”

The new training programme lasts 12 weeks. The first of the intake will begin the training in late January, part of which will include a minimum of 30 hours work experience in an existing sports facility operated by Glasgow Life.

The programme, which has been specially customised by Street League, will include a wide range of vocational training including sports coaching and lifeguard training. It will be open to any Clyde Gateway resident aged between 16 and 25 who is registered with either Skills Development Scotland or Job Centre Plus as unemployed. Street League will be responsible for determining suitability and eligibility.

Anyone interested in taking up one of the training place is asked to call Joe or Gillian at Street League on 0141 285 6440 or by e-mail to [email protected]

DRUM ROLL - IGNIS ASSET MANAGEMENT WOMEN’S 10K LAUNCHTHE 2012 Ignis Asset Management Women’s 10k launched in Glasgow this week, amid the skirl of bagpipes and the beat of drums, heralding a run of enhancements being introduced for this year’s race on Sunday 13 May.

With over 12,000 women participating in the much-loved annual event, race organisers Glasgow Life are implementing a number of improvements to ensure the race maintains its position as the UK’s largest all women’s 10k.

Under the ‘running clock’ outside Buchanan Bus Station pipers and drummers from the Williamwood

Pipe Band joined Clyde 1 presenters Knoxy and Shebahn Littlejohn to highlight that route entertainment will be doubled to every 500m for 2012.

It is anticipated that almost 50% of the field will be first-time runners looking for a challenge, but with that added element of fun.

The Ignis Asset Management Women’s 10k has always been considered a great day out, despite the occasional puff and pant and committing to more music is sure to add to the experience for many. Councillor George Redmond, Chair of Glasgow Life, said: “The Ignis

Asset Management Women’s 10k is such a special day. We have listened to what last year’s runners have said – good and bad – and made five key improvements to make sure it says that way.

“It is only four months to the big day itself so now is the time to pull on your running shoes and start training.”

In keeping with the many austerity measures being made across the country and in order to ensure excellent value for money the entry price for the 2012 Women’s 10k will be frozen at £20, a price held since the

2010 event. To allow more people to pass

through the start line as smoothly as possible the 2012 race will see more start pulses than ever before.

This means there will be fewer women in each starting group and more space for every runner, which is great news for those who like to set their own pace - be it a sprint, a skip or an altogether slower tempo.

While for those keen to finish in a set time or smash a personal best the introduction of pace setters will be a welcome addition for 2012.

A top club runner will join each main muster group and set a pace that, if matched, will ensure each member of the group hits their target.

Like pace-setters the option to upgrade to a technical t-shirt is sure to appeal to the more seasoned runner.

In addition to the prized medal the t-shirt is a cherished souvenir for many. However, the opportunity to upgrade to a new super-lightweight t-shirt, which helps keep you cool in training and on race day, is expected to be a big success for 2012.

Clyde 1 presenters Knoxy and Shebahn Littlejohn also unveilled the new creative campaign for the 2012 Ignis Asset Management Women’s 10k – My 10k, followed by two words explaining their reason for signing up. Clyde 1’s DJ Knoxy said: “My story is simple, My 10k – for charity.

This year, Shebahn and I will be running for Cash for Kids, a cause we both hold dear given the tremendous work the charity does across Scotland.”

“And I’m really excited to hear that there is to be more entertainment on the route. I ran it last year.

It was an incredible experience and I can’t wait to do it again, but on those rare occasions when my energy started to dip there was nothing better than some pumping – or in this case piping – tunes to keep my legs moving. I would encourage women of all shapes and sizes to get involved. If you want to hop, walk, skip or sprint, it’s an achievement to take part.”

The race attracts thousands of first-timers, those raising money for a cause close to their heart and more serious runners, each with their own motivation for signing up.

Glasgow Life hope that by encouraging women to share their story, thousands of others will be inspired to join them for what has

become one of the most inclusive and popular events in the Scottish sporting calendar.

Chris Samuel, Chief Executive, Ignis Asset Management said: “Ignis is now in its 16th year as title sponsor of the 10k and the event’s popularity just keeps continuing to grow. There have been many changes to the route and format over the years and I’m sure these latest enhancements will result in the 2012 race being bigger and more successful than ever.”

Once again, competitors can take advantage of on-line “early bird” offers through the official race website www.runglasgow.org, which gives a discount of up to £7 to runners entering online before Friday 16 March or up to £14 for entering both the Women’s 10k and the September 2012 Great Scottish Run. Online registration is now available at £20.

Margaret Curran MP and Frank McAveety MSP high-light the proposed changes to vital community lifelineMargaret Curran and Frank McAveety visited Baillieston post office at the weekend to congratulate Mark Adrian and his staff on the service run from and the success of Baillieston Post Office. They know how valued the local post office is to the people of Baillieston. This is great news in Baillieston but legislation recently passed in the House of Commons will mean the privatisation of Royal Mail. This leads to doubts over the future of the Post Office network which can no longer be guaranteed in the years to come. Margaret who spoke in the debate made clear that the legislation is a big mistake and is not supported by the public. Margaret and Frank took the opportunity to make passing shoppers aware of the change to legislation and asked for them to pledge the support by signing a petition. Barlanark Post Office is currently for sale and unless a buyer is found its fate remains uncertain. Margaret Curran says “

Urban Post Offices often face different challenges from those in rural communities, they too deal with isolation and represent a lifeline to their communities. We need to take action now to ensure that we do not end up in a situation on which a large retailer steps in and takes over the service. An elderly

person living in Barlanark may be unable to get to any of the large retailers in the community. A single mother with 3 children and without a car relies on local services that the Post Office provides. This legislation is a forerunner of many Post Office closures because we are not taking the necessary

steps to protect the service.”Frank McAveety says “ Privatisation of the Royal Mail has the long term threat to jobs and services at a local level. I will be working with Margaret to ensure the voices of the east end are heard and all the local post offices are protected”.

AMAZING WINS FOR GLASGOW DENTAL PRACTICE AT TOP UK INDUSTRY AWARDS

The team at Spring Grove Clinic in Barrachnie Road Garrowhill is celebrating the fantastic achievement of winning two of the top UK Private Dentistry Awards of 2010, namely Practice of the Year and Best Patient Care. It was also awarded runner up in Best Community Charity Project and Outstanding Individual of the Year along with being shortlisted for Most Attractive Practice and Best Team. Winning the Practice of the Year and Best Patient Care Awards is a great endorsement of the Spring Grove Clinic teams’ commitment to providing affordable, value for money, community based, professional family oral and dental health care, advice, support and treatment to an exceptionally high standard. The award winning practice prides itself on its patient focussed approach which is always courteous, efficient and friendly, set within surroundings that are luxurious, comfortable and welcoming. Heading up the clinical team is Dr David Cunningham who established his practice in Garrowhill over 14 years ago. Winning these two Awards recognises his firmly held belief that a community based dental practice, where patient relationships and trust are key, using the latest dental technology,

can provide the same level of treatment options, care and surroundings as a large city centre based dental practice. Commenting, David Cunningham said, “The team has worked incredibly hard to make Spring Grove Clinic a fantastic place for our patients. I am delighted that our efforts have been recognised by the top UK industry professionals.” “My focus has always been to provide excellent patient care with the very best dental advice and treatment. I believe in spending time with my patients, fully explaining preventative and treatment options to them and supporting them as they choose their treatment plans. I am very grateful to our patients for their fantastic comments in support of our Awards application.” At the Awards presentation, the Spring Grove Clinic team were commended for excellence across all of the categories, for the state of the art facility, and being a team who strive to provide excellent patient care. Its’ efforts in raising funds to support Yorkhill Children’s Hospital ECMO Unit won the runner-up award for Best Community Charity Project. Spring Grove Clinic is a leader in providing dental implants, cosmetic dentistry, invisible braces, tooth whitening and family dentistry.

McAveety Slams SNP Games Funding DecisionGlasgow Shettleston MSP Frank McAveety has hit out at a decision by Scottish Enterprise to slash Commonwealth Games legacy funding by almost half. Clyde Gateway, the body responsible for regenerating the East End of Glasgow, has been hit with a 46% cut in funding for urban regeneration in 2011/2012. The agency has been told it will share around £6.8 million with five other agencies, instead of the £7 million it was initially promised. Frank said: “The Enterprise Minister seems to be more interested in facilitating meetings for his friend the Education Minister, who he wants to succeed him as an MSP than he is in the well being of the people of the East End. At this very moment he should be pulling a meeting together with Scottish Enterprise to demand that they withdraw this ridiculous proposal and get around the table with all the partners to fulfil the promises made.”Frank added: “Unlike any other renewal programme in the country commitments were made to ensure that Glasgow could make the best of the opportunities for the Games and regeneration investment. There is no better case for having an impact on Scotland’s economic performance and I am demanding an urgent meeting with the Scottish Government to urge them to ensure Scottish Enterprise withdrawal the proposal to make a massive cut in their previous commitments to the area.”

I am delighted that our efforts have been recognised by the top UK industry professionals.” “My focus has always been to provide excellent patient care with the very best dental advice and treatment.

Madison McCarron AppealThere is an event taking place in the Centaur Bar in Easterhouse on the 25th of February (see Advert in this paper), in aid of young Madison McCarron, a little girl who has endured more than most over her short life. In an effort to raise funds for a couple of things that would make Madison’s life a lot easier Duncan Houston and some friends have arranged a Pub Crawl in the area.

The Pub Crawl is taking place on Saturday 11th February, 2 weeks prior to the actual charity function.Already there are around 15-20 people taking part in this already, but Duncan is looking for more. The idea of the Pub Crawl is that all Participants pay £20 per head which covers their own alcohol/food on the day and in return they will try raise as much as possible via a sponsor form which will be supplied. There are 5 pubs in the East End which will be participating, starting at

Centaur Bar, Easterhouse at 12pmGriers, EasterhouseBridge Inn, EasterhouseSwinton Tavern, EasterhouseRhinsdale Tavern, Baillieston

This really is a good local cause and they are aiming to raise around £3000. The project is estimated at £5000 and Madison’s mother has already raised £2000 with 2 previous events. If you are interested in taking part in the Pub Crawl contact Duncan on 07506-525361 for more details.

FOUNDATION OF THE CITY OF GLASGOW 1400 ANNIVERSARY

Danny Dobbie Visual Statement, will be performing in the St Enoch Centre on Friday and Saturday13 and 14 January with a new dance celebrating the Spirit of Glasgow.

He has arranged the story of City through Bell- tree- Bird and Fish as a collage of the life of Glasgow St Mungo also called Kentigern was the

founding Bishop of Glasgow in 6 C. he was exiled from the city when there was war amongst the tribes of Strathclyde

King Ryderich called him to return from Wales when there was peace in the Kingdom.Mungo arrived at Hoddom near Dumfries where he established a monastic settlement. Last Year the Lord Provost travelled to Hoddom

and opened the site at Hoddom with the convenor of Dumfries and Galloway Council. This will now become part of the st Mungo Trail linking Glasgow Cathedral with Hoddom and Culross and Trappain Law in East Lothian. Danny Dobbie has supported this work through his creative energy and work with local dancers from Greater Easterhouse at the Bridge.

Lightburn Hospital Saved

The Re-Gen was delighted to hear that Deputy First Minister Nicola Sturgeon announced recently in the Scottish Parliament, that she had overturned the Greater Glasgow and Clyde Health Board’s decision to close Lightburn Hospital.

This was a cause that the Re-Gen really believed in and we continued throughout 2011 to highlight the fact that the hospital was under threat. As a hospital in the East End which caters for the needs of Parkinson Disease sufferers in particular it is a welcome relief for many families faced with the prospect of having to make long bus journeys to Stobhill Hospital in the north of the city that Lightburn will still continue to carry out the good work it does.

As this is now a done deal to keep the hospital open it opens the doors for politicians of all parties to claim “It was down to them”

but the Re-Gen knows the truth. As the fight went on throughout the whole of

2011 we believe the only people who can stand proud in this matter were, Nicola Sturgeon for overturning the decision, Margaret Curran and Paul Martin for their continued presence at meetings and marches and of course Gerry McCann, 49, who has Parkinson’s disease and who organised the Save Lightburn Campaign.

Without people like these fighting against the closure, the Greater Glasgow and Clyde Health Board proposals would have gone through and left this area devoid of a much needed service within the local community. So as we approach the forthcoming council elections in May there will be numerous claims from those who wish to represent us that they fought to save this or that but as we all know some people seize any opportunity to jump on successful bandwagons, but we know the truth - don’t we?

Sizzling Suzie’s Winter Warmers

Hello everyone, Happy New year to one and all. I hope you all have had a lovely time over the holidays and that Santa was good to you all. If like me you over indulged over the festive period, fear not as I have a few belly busting ideas for the next few weeks to get us all back to eating healthily. This week I have compiled a larder and fridge list to help you stock up on lots of ingredients that in minutes can transform every day stuff like chops, chicken and even leftovers. Some recipes call for an ingredient that you may not have and for that reason you won’t make it. Trust me though as it is worth having lots of different herbs, spices and such like. Although you don’t have to rush out and buy everything at once. Just chuck one or two extra items in your trolley when you are doing your weekly shop. Before you know it you will have a fine set of basic ingredients. If you have the basics at your disposal then you will be able to rustle up a meal from next to nothing or as I like to call it….scratch. Hee hee

Aquarius (21 Jan - 19 Feb)

Pisces (20 Feb - 20 Mar)

You start the year in a far more optimistic mood than you’ve been in for some time. You are right to feel that way! The unusual feature to January is that in the first three weeks every planet will be moving direct speed. To have three weeks of strong, positive energy from all the little planets is a gift, and you may want to use that time to initiate something of importance.

It is only January and already your mind is set to warm sunny beaches, you found the festive period exhausting and find yourself looking for a cheap deal, before you jet off you still have time to sort out all those loose ends to do with business from December, go to it and don’t take no for an answer your assertiveness will get you what you want!

As the month opens, financial matters will take your time to sort out, for there will be decisions to make, paperwork to fill out, arrangements to set, attention to detail is important! As a Gemini, you are not very materialistic - you prefer to talk about various ideas and concepts instead of thinking about money matters, but everyone has to address them from time to time. Why not get them all done now!

As you begin January, you may be focused on your partner quite a bit. If you are married or in an established relationship, you already know the identity of this person. If you are not in that kind of relationship, there is someone who has caught your eye, amour seems to be your driving force this month.

You might have complained to friends that you have much too much to do and too little time to get it all done, and coming so soon after the festivities, it’s taking a lot to get into the swing of things. You might be surprised to discover your friends aren’t being sympathetic. They will remind you that you should be happy to have such a busy life.

This is an ideal month for seeing progress on your dearest wishes, especially during the first three weeks. So, make a list of all you’d like to achieve and start scheduling your calendar. Your love life will be buzzing too, and with just a little nudge from you single or if you are attached, and you will see your relationships taking on new meaning.

With so much going on in your career due to changes wrought by the eclipses in recent years, perhaps you have neglected your physical home, in terms of maintenance, repairs, in-depth cleaning, and de-cluttering, painting, and modernizing. Early January would be an ideal month to go over what needs to be done, and to get started, be more motivated to accomplish big goals outside the home.

Lucky you, you will get a second chance at making that sweet trip happen. Watch what happens at the full moon in Cancer on January 9. This full moon will light you travel house and bring with it none of the difficulties the new moon had with Uranus. Instead, this full moon will receive a very positive and highly energetic vibration from Mars, your ruler, and so if you do travel, it may well be to see long lost friends or to make up with friends.

Your career has shown exciting progress ever since Mars entered your tenth house of fame and honors in November. Mars is not leaving any time soon - he will remain here until July, so you have plenty of time to make your mark this year. Because Mars only comes by this area of your chart every two years, its arrival there is a sure indication you have a rare ability to get what you want from employers.

Most people think of January as the time for a fresh start, but for you, it’s not only the New Year, but also birthday time, making this a doubly exciting important time. You like to give your lives form, goals, and structure, and you want to map out an outline of a plan, but being to planned does not allow for the unseen, try to be a bit more flexible.

The start of January begins in a soft, peaceful and serene way. In the cold beauty that January brings there is a stark loveliness about January. The harsh weather tends to strip nature to her bare essentials, and you see her beauty within. You have planets in the most meditative place of the chart, and the quietest (twelfth house), allowing us to think, reflect, pray, and reconnect with our spirit within.

Try to stay cheerful, with the Sun, Pluto, and Mercury moving through your eleventh house of hopes and wishes, you will have plenty of reasons to connect with friends and to socialize quite a bit during the first three weeks of January. You may have made at least one new friend in December, and this month, you will have time to cultivate that friendship and grow it into something more.

Big Lottery Funding for John Wheatley College Programme

John Wheatley College’s award-winning ‘Transitions to Learning and Work’ pilot programme for vulnerable young people has been awarded Big Lottery Funding of more than half a million pounds to develop and expand its valuable work. Announced last week, the Big Lottery Fund has granted £547,767 to this ground-breaking programme designed and run by John Wheatley College in East Glasgow in partnership with Glasgow City Council Department of Social Work Services and a range of local partners including housing associations. The programme is also supported by the Scottish Funding Council.

‘Transitions’ was set-up as a pilot to address significant challenges being experienced by vulnerable young people. Many young people from East and North Glasgow, usually through no fault of their own, find themselves involved with the local authority care system in ‘looked after’ situations during their young lives. This can clearly have a negative effect on their learning and can impact on their self-esteem and confidence. Typically, these vulnerable learners take non-linear pathways through education and the ‘Transitions to Learning and Work’ programme offers flexibility of progression, tailoring provision to their individual needs. The programme aims to rebuild their self-esteem by helping them develop a range of personal and practical skills to prepare them for the workplace and for life outside the care system, supporting them towards independence and responsibility. In partnership with Glasgow City Council, the College puts together a ‘package’ of learning experiences which benefit and develop each young person.

The pilot programme has already supported around 150 vulnerable young people and provided vocational, core and employability skills to help them thrive and be part of their community when they emerge from ‘looked-after’ situations. This new funding will allow John Wheatley College to further develop the programme and more closely target the needs of these learners. Having already attracted significant attention by winning the Glasgow City Council Flourish Award, being nominated in the Herald Scotland Awards and achieving a ‘commended’ accolade from Scotland’s Colleges, the ‘Transitions to Learning and Work’ programme also led to John Wheatley College becoming the first Scottish

College to achieve the Buttle UK Chartermark from the Frank Buttle Trust which supports young people in care.

George McGuiness, Community Representative and Chair of North East Glasgow Public Partnership Forum, was very pleased with the announcement. He said, “This is excellent news for the communities in East and North East Glasgow. The jobs market is difficult enough for young people today, especially in our communities where recent employment gains have been reversed. “John Wheatley College’s Transitions programme has provided a stable and consistent learning environment for these very vulnerable young people who may have experienced a discontinuous and fragmented lifestyle.

The programme gives them the skills and confidence to progress into work or further learning and, eventually, make their own positive contribution to their community.

”We’re very grateful to the Big Lottery Fund for recognising the significance of the impact of Transitions to Learning and Work.” College Principal, Alan Sherry, said, “We are delighted that our application for funding for the ‘Transitions to Learning and Work’ programme has been successful and that the Big Lottery Fund has committed to helping John Wheatley College and its partners further develop this trail-blazing and worthwhile pilot programme.

“Since the programme’s inception, we have continually been working with the young people and our partners to explore ways to improve and establish the best ‘fit’ with the learners’ needs. This funding will ensure the continued work of the programme over the next three years, helping us to further develop and expand the support services being built into the learning journey of these students.

“Becoming part of the Big Lottery Fund family is very exciting - being spotlighted for this grant is a real privilege and testament to the importance of the role which the Transitions programme can and will play in the lives of many local, vulnerable young people.

“Here at John Wheatley College we are very grateful to the Big Lottery Fund for their support which will allow us to develop and expand this important work for the young people of our communities.”

Support to help you quitA visit to the optician led to a stark warning for Marie Lilley – the 61-year-old widow from Riddrie in Glasgow had early signs of glaucoma and could go blind if she didn’t stop smoking.

While buying NRT patches in the pharmacy, Marie saw a notice advertising a seven-week stop smoking programme at the local health centre. ‘At first I was doubtful,’ says Marie. ‘I’m not good in crowds or with strangers and I was nervous before I went. But everyone was so welcoming and, with nine or ten people there each session, it was like a day out. I really enjoyed myself”.

By then, Marie’s daughter had decided to give up smoking as well. ‘We supported each other and it helped both of us which was wonderful.’When Marie’s grandson, who was serving as a bomb disposal officer in Afghanistan, was injured she was very glad of the support from the group.

‘They were truly amazing. Trish, from the North East Smokefree Services Team, who led the group, really helped me to keep focused.Marie followed the advice and is now proud that she went through such an ordeal without starting smoking again.

‘My grandson’s now back in the UK. And I’m all the better for managing without cigarettes for 15 months now,’ she says.

Marie’s stop smoking course was one of the 25 seven-week courses that are run every year in the North East Sector of Glasgow Community Health Partnership. (CHP).Health improvement practitioner for the CHP, Trish Thomson, says “It is essential for smoking cessation advisors to have an open and friendly

manner and always to remember that clients’ needs will change as their quit progresses,” ‘It’s important to create an environment which people will come back to, knowing they’ll be welcomed and never judged,’ says Trish.

For free help to stop smoking call 0141 201 9832. The Stop Smoking Advisors will also be at Parkhead Forge on Monday 16th January to offer help and advice to anyone wanting to give up Smoking..

FIRST DONATE SOS BUS OFFERING FIRST AID TO CITY CENTRE REVELLERS IN NEED OF HELP

First has donated an emergency bus fully equipped to provide full First aid in partnership with Strathclyde Police, the British Red Cross, the Glasgow Council on Alcohol and the Scottish Ambulance Service.

Providing a modern and comprehensive first aid/medical facility, Glasgow’s specially adapted SOS bus donated by First, is a place of safety that meets the needs of any person threatened by an inability to get home safely due to illness, alcohol misuse, assault, domestic abuse, injury, emotional distress or any other risk or vulnerability.

Glasgow’s SOS bus is staffed by volunteers from the British Red Cross and the Glasgow Council on Alcohol. The aim of the adapted bus is not only to provide immediate help and support to vulnerable people but also to intervene with a view to offering a comprehensive follow-up and counselling service to tackle the binge drinking culture at its core.

The bus is operational

between 10pm and 4am on Friday and Saturday evenings for an initial pilot period until 31 March 2012. The bus will be located outside Glasgow Central Station on Gordon Street in the heart of the City Centre. To add extra support there will be an ancillary vehicle moving around the City Centre which will be able to pick up vulnerable people and convey them to the SOS bus for help and support. There will also be an NHS ambulance situated next to the bus should anyone require further medical care and attention. John Cahill, Operations Director for First Glasgow said: “We are delighted to be involved in the project and support the community in this way. At First we have a strong corporate social responsibility culture and by donating one of our buses to the project we are helping to improve the quality of life of the local community and society at large. We work hard to provide bus services that help get people home safely and the provision of this specially adapted bus

will further benefit the local community.”

Gordon Matheson, leader of Glasgow City Council, said: “Too often the likes of the police, ambulance and A&E are left to pick up the pieces by those who misuse alcohol. The SOS bus will play a vital role in preventing people who have drunk to excess from wasting the time of emergency services. “It will provide a place of safety when someone is too drunk to look after themselves. But it will also act as the first step towards addressing someone’s binge drinking and directing them towards alcohol support services.”

Strathclyde Police Chief Constable Stephen House said: “It is not just somewhere to go for people to sober up. People who find themselves in the bus are clearly in need of some help. They are people who are vulnerable and need looked after in the short term but given advice and help for the longer term. This is exactly the service that the SOS bus will offer.”

Lucky Escapes as Wind ReturnsThere were a few close shaves as Hurricaine “Bawbag” made an unwelcome return last week to the Glasgow area.

Fences were blown down, Garden Sheds were transformed into piles of firewood and trees came crashing down although thankfully local residents escaped with only minor injuries as gales swept throughout the east end and beyond. No matter where you live in the east end there was no escape but while we suffered think of all those who went three or four days without electricity.

At least it seems to have calmed down now, we still have the prospect of clearing the frost from the windows of cars and trudging to work in the snow but do we really care, we are a resilient lot in the East End and we can get through it and look forward to the summer which I am reliably informed will be on the 22nd of June and will last until the 24th (if we’re lucky).

LAST Year, Bailie Catherine McMaster attended the dedication and opening of the garden in Ashcraig School in Craigend

This was a special celebration to record thanks from Danny McGrory, Head Teacher who thanked many benefactors for their efforts to restore this garden in the centre of the school campus. Payback teams and Land and Environmental Services had assisted with the big dig to plant out new beds abd replace pathways and broken Paving stones which were damaged over past years. Members of staff past and present came to the school to enjoy an open day.

The Wonderful World was powerfully sung by a pupil to represent the prospective future for all students. This garden is a memorial to the memory of wonderful students who have died.

Balloons and songs filled the air with fun as Danny McGrory let the balloons away to connect the School with its past pupils great courage and wonderful stories have been shared. Bailie Catherine McMaster told the Re-Gen, “this school offers a full curriculum for secondary pupils and great friendships continue through the Former Pupils club which meets every week in the school”

EAST End MSP, John Mason, has started 2012 by re-stating his enthusiasm for local Community Councils but is disappointed that some areas still do not have them.

He highlighted the valuable work these organisations perform at the most local level. Community Councils are democratic, statutory bodies of elected volunteers representing the views and needs of communities to Glasgow City Council, other public agencies working in their area, MSPs and MPs. Many do much more, including managing local projects and organising special events.

Speaking of Community Councils, SNP Member of the Scottish Parliament for Glasgow Shettleston, John Mason, said: “Community councils do good work representing local people. Their work is vital and relies upon the hard work of volunteers. Sadly a number of community councils in the East End are struggling to find enough volunteers to keep them going. “I try to attend community

councils in different parts of the East End as often as I can. There I can hear what the local issues are, share information and discuss issues that range from dog fouling and licensing to planning, gritting and many others.

“It is encouraging to see community councils active in Auchenshuggle, Baillieston, Broomhouse, Calton and Bridgeton, Carmyle, Dennistoun, Garrowhill, Mount Vernon, Parkhead, and Swinton. However, there are a number of areas where no community council exists at all, such as Barlanark, Camlachie, Dalmarnock, Fullarton, and Shettleston. “The advantage that community councils have over other groups like tenants associations is that they are statutory bodies. Therefore, they have to be notified of planning applications in the area and the City Council has to listen to what they say. If anyone is looking for information about their community council or how to go about setting one up, I would be happy to provide information.”

Scottish Government on the ‘wrong train of thought’SCOTTISH Labour’s Paul Martin has called on The Scottish Government to ensure that Transport Scotland safeguard the future of Duke Street Train Station in his constituency. Mr Martin made the call after it emerged that a Scottish Government consultation is looking at closing several train stations in Glasgow, including Duke Street Station.

Speaking exclusively to The Re-Gen, the MSP for Glasgow Provan said:

“Frankly this is a crazy idea from the Scottish Government. We should be encouraging the use of public transport not making it harder for people to access it.

“It is a vital stop in the East End for commuters, shoppers and visitors. The station is unstaffed and has minimal overheads so the money saved would be tiny compared to the money lost by not getting passengers.

“Last year, over 74,000 journeys were made from Duke Street, that

is 5 times as many people who were using the station a decade ago. The Scottish Government are wrong to think they can shut the station and I will be campaigning to make sure that my constituents have their concerns heard.”

The consultation period about the closure runs until 20th February and you can have your say by contacting [email protected].

St Andrews Pupils welcome special visitor

Prior to the Christmas holidays, St. Andrew’s R.C. Secondary School welcomed a special visitor to the school.

Mr. Harry Bibring spoke to around 100 pupils about his experiences in Nazi occupied Austria in the late 1930s in a visit organised by the Holocaust Educational Trust (HET).

Mr. Bibring was born in 1925 into a Jewish household and was aged 13 when Hitler’s troops marched into Vienna. Mr. Bibring’s testimony included his recollections of the

beginning of the Nazi regime in Austria and the introduction of the anti-Semitic Nuremberg Laws which made life very difficult for Jews living in Austria. Mr. Bibring also shared his memories of being sent to England via the Kindertransport where he lived for the remainder of the war.

Although Mr. Bibring was fortunate to survive the Holocaust, his father was imprisoned before dying en route to a death camp and his mother later died in Sobibor. The young people involved in this event were enthralled

by Mr. Bibring’s testimony and will long remember the visit. St. Andrew’s Head Teacher Mr. Gerry Lyons told the Re-Gen, “ It was a privilege for us to welcome Harry Bibring to our school and his testimony will remain a powerful reminder of the horrors so many experienced. We are grateful to the Holocaust Educational Trust for co-ordinating the visit and we hope having heard Harry’s testimony, our students will learn from the lessons of the Holocaust and make a positive difference in their own lives”. Karen

Pollock, Chief Executive of the Holocaust Educational Trust added: “The Holocaust Educational Trust educates and engages students from across the UK, from all communities about the Holocaust and there can be no better way than through the first-hand testimony of a survivor. Harry’s story is one of tremendous courage during horrific circumstances and by

hearing his testimony, students were given the opportunity to learn where prejudice and racism can ultimately lead.

At the Trust, we impart the history of the Holocaust to young people, to ensure that we honour the memory of those whose lives were lost and take forward the lessons taught by those who survived”.

With our funding from Comic Relief this has allowed our young people to learn about guitar drums and media and they have gone on to form bands and DJ’ing sets. Our young people have now preformed at the Classic Grand, Fuse Youth Cafe Gig Nights, Big Day Oot at Tollcross Park and in conjunction with Creation Studios Trongate the band has been rehearsing and performing there. The funding from Comic Relief is an invaluable asset to the the community, two of our former members have now formed a band called the “Colerones” and have been performing at King Tuts. The funding is so much needed for children to learn and have fun and the funding is invaluable to small projects like The Sound Lab to give the children and young people the opportunity to learn and have fun.

“Congratulations Platform on all the hard work over the past 5 years”Supporting the Re-Gen with this campaign

Domestic Abuse Campaign LaunchedSTRATHCLYDE Police have recently launched a new online domestic abuse campaign.

The campaign aims to highlight the growing issue of children exposed to domestic abuse at home. In the last year 66% of all incidents of domestic abuse there was a child involved, this shows an increase of over 20% from the previous year.

This “Speak Out For You, For Them” campaign will appear on TV, radio, online, on bus tickets and on outdoor poster sites with the aim of encouraging victims or their friends, families or neighbours to report domestic abuse.

Chief Superintendent Bob Hamilton, DCI Yvonne Scott, Mhairi McGovern (ASSIST), Mairead Tagg (Glasgow East Women’s Aid) and Anne Marie Hicks (COPFS) launched the campaign with

an online video speaking directly to the victims. They then participated in a live online chat via twitter where the public were invited to tweet any questions to the experts. The twitter takeover prompted lots of questions which our experts answered.

“As part of this campaign, we are asking victims - and families or friends of victims - to speak out, if not for you, for the children involved in these abusive situations. These children are viewing scenes that no child should ever see.”

If you have any concerns regarding vulnerable children or need additional information, either log on to Strathclyde Police website, contact crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 or contact your local Community Policing Team on 0141 532 4600

Superintendent Eddie Smith (Operations) at London Road Police Office, told the Re-Gen, “ The launch of this campaign emphasises Strathclyde Police and our partners commitment to dealing with Domestic Abuse and to supporting victims and their families.” He continued, “ Domestic Abuse is totally unacceptable and has no place in society and we will continue to work together to eradicate this scourge. I would appeal to anyone who either suffers from or knows someone who is a victim to contact any of the numbers below where all information passed will be treated in the strictest confidence. Drugs CaptureB’ Division officers captured drug dealers in a pre planned operation carried out in the Cranhill area of Glasgow.

Officers from the local Community Policing Team based at London Road were assisted by B Division Road Policing, Operation Support Division, CID and mutual aid from B Division.

A total of 65 officers were utilised in the execution of

7 Sheriffs Warrants. This Operation was a huge succes with the total

drugs seized having a street value of £4000 and £5000 in cash seized under the Proceeds of Crime Act.

As a result 4 Males and 3 females appeared from custody at Glasgow Sheriff Court, all for charges in relation to being concerned in the supply of controlled drugs.

ON Tuesday 12 December 2011, the Lord Advocate announced a festive pilot to strengthen the existing policy on knife crime.

The initiative was intended to deter and reduce violence and keep people safe over the festive season.

Ultimately, any person arrested for a knife crime would be dealt with under a more stringent prosecution policy.

The offender would automatically received a 7 day imprisonment, allowing them

to return to court a week later, thus fast tracking them through the court system.

During this period 6 people were arrested within Calton and East centre wards for being in possession of a knife in public.

Unhappy New Year’ for Organised CrimeIt was not a ‘Happy New Year’ for Organised Crime Groups in the East End of Glasgow. After months of painstaking work, the Pro Active Unit, based at London Rd P.O., B’ Division were in a position to go after the main players in a local Organised Crime Group that has been bringing misery to our local communities.

In possession of Sheriff search warrants the Pro Active Team, assisted by other officers from across B’ Division crashed in doors at four separate addresses across the East End of Glasgow. Within the addresses at Millroad street (Calton), Bellfield Street, Reidvale Street, Bathgate Street (Dennistoun), Drugs with a street value of more than £10,000 were recovered together with £5,740 in cash which was seized under the Proceeds of Crime Act.

4 Persons were charged in relation to Drug offences and the Proceeds of Crime Act.Detective Inspector Alan Hunter from the Criminal Investigation Department at London Rd P.O. stated that a proactive and robust policy

of targeting organised crime groups had been adopted as well as using all legal means at the force’s disposal to disrupt and dismantle them.“We are successfully removing Organised Crime Group criminals from our local communities, stopping them selling deadly drugs and taking the cash back that they have made from their crimes. Protecting our communities and ensuring the East End is a safe place to live remains our priority.”

“Key to our success in tackling this serious crime, is the help and assistance from the local communities. I would urge anyone who has information regarding criminality to contact the police, which they can do in confidence by contacting Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 or informing their local Community Police Officer.”He added a warning to drug dealers: “The message is quite clear to those involved in criminal activity, if you get involved in drug dealing and serious criminality in this force area, we will come after you.”

Credit Unions – Here For YouCredit Unions provide a full range of advice, training and development services to help member credit unions grow and become sustainable financial co-operatives.

These are some of the services they offer to their member credit unions:• representationtogovernments,

regulators, the media and other stakeholders• accesstoinformationandguidance• memberratesforconferences,

training and consultancy services• arangeofproductsandaffinity

schemes designed exclusively for member credit unions• usingthecollectivebuyingpower

of members to purchase products and services• onlineinformationandnetworking

opportunitiesTheir VisionCredit unions will become the primary

source of affordable, high quality and ethical financial services for the people of Great Britain.

Their MissionIs to be the principal, democratically

governed representative body of the credit union movement in Great Britain and to provide credit unions with the leadership, services and assistance they require to meet the financial needs and aspirations of the people of this country.

What exactly are credit unions? Credit Unions are small non-profit financial organisations set up by members with something in common,

to benefit their community. That common factor may be living in the same town, working in the same industry (e.g. the Police Credit Union) or belonging to a particular trade union. Sadly under publicised, roughly 500 credit unions cover the UK offering loans, savings and current accounts to their members, and almost a million Brits are members.

Who are they for? They’re there to provide a financial community, where its members mutually benefit…as there’s no profit for third party shareholders. This can mean helping those who can’t get access to ordinary bank products; a lifeline in less well-off communities for folks grappling with their finances. Plus, they can be a welcome alternative to payday loans or doorstep lending. Yet, they’re not just for those struggling financially, they also appeal to those who want to bank ethically and benefit their community, and some larger credit unions, such as the police or the big Glasgow union,

offer products that can beat mainstream finance. Their primary functions are savings and borrowing, although other services that may be available include current accounts (similar to a Basic Bank Account), Cash ISAs or sometimes funeral plans.

“IT’S BEYOND A JOKE NOW”

FOLLOWING the aftermath of th

e

Football Match

between Celtic and

Rangers last S

unday there were

over 300 arrests with accid

ent and

emergency units filled to capacity

and

as usual when it a

ll calms down what is

being done about it.

The police

have been briefed and

de-briefed this week with high level

meetings being held in the run up to the

next encounter but given that their h

ands

are tied as to

what they can basica

lly

do it is up to US the general public t

o

get a grip of the situ

ation and put it on

the line that w

e will not to

lerate this

anti-social behaviour any longer.

The

problem has been with us for around

110 years and during that tim

e 2 World

Wars have been fought w

ith comrades of

opposite religions la

ying down their lives

for their co

untry. Victo

ria Crosses have

been awarded to heroes of both religions

yet when it c

omes down to a football

match which at the end of th

e day results

in three points being awarded to the

winning team (NOTHING MORE – NOTHING

LESS) th

ere is mayhem and serious in

jury

meted out for ju

st being “O

NE OF TH

EM”.

Football ri

valry between teams is

normally healthy and the crazy thing is

that when, ta

ke for instance, St. Jo

hnstone

play Kilmarnock, th

ere are players from

different re

ligions in oppositio

n, there is

no need for 1000 police officers o

n duty in

fact the majority

of these type of games

police themselves.

Why then is i

t that w

hen the “Old Firm

meet there is t

he need to have a high

alert and tension in the air fr

om early

morning till midnight and beyond? O

ne

thing is for su

re ...It Has N

othing To

Do With Football!! So what happens

now? Well fo

r a start w

e all could act

responsibly, but th

is is easier sa

id than

done. Drink is a

major factor and with

the kick-off la

st week being 12.30 many

supporters began drinking early in the

morning, whether th

ey had it in the

house from the Saturday night, o

r were

served in the MANY public houses th

at

open their back doors t

hinking they are

doing their customers a

favour. Number

One Problem..... ALCO

HOL. The majority

of supporters w

ho rush down four of five

pints, a couple of sp

irits or a bottle

of

Buckfast, in such a short s

pace of time

then go on a supporters bus w

ith a couple

of cans or bottle

s (yes w

e know that drink

is not su

pposed to be allowed on buses,

but we all know a blind eye is t

urned),

then get caught up in the atmosphere

of the songs etc...

, is a certain recipe for

trouble. What happens th

en is that th

ey

enter the game and being surrounded

by police and ste

wards they seem to

be able to keep a lid on their emotions

albeit some will e

ither be warned or even

arrested for minor offences.

It’s on the

road home when the drink has begun to

kick in and the hatred that they have for

each other spills

over. Now the people

we are speaking about here are NOT the

usual perceived “Thugs”,

these are

people who are run of the mill n

eighbours

and have “Friends” o

f opposite religions,

who in any other circumstances w

ould

normally do everything they could to help

anyone in need. The problem is t

hough,

that in the run up to an “O

ld Firm” game,

all the hype that has been spouted by

some of the tabloid newspapers i

n an

effort to sell th

e paper basica

lly fuels

the bigotry and hatred. Just t

he slant

put on stories ca

n stir up feelings of

bigotry or perceived bigotry and even

photos which in the normal ru

n of the

week would be accepted as part o

f the

story, all of a sudden are constru

ed as

being too much of one side or th

e other.

BIGOTRY, no matter w

hat shape it t

akes

is unacce

ptable and to put a spin on a

phrase or paragraph in a newspaper can

be part of it.

In a newspaper th

is is easy

to do...Take for example both teams of th

e

“Old Firm” w

in 1-0 they week before they

both meet.

Headlines proclaim Celtic

Cruise To

Victory,

Rangers Scrape Win, (

or vice

versa), such headlines are perceived as

favouring one team or the other and in

some cases as bigotry, which to normal

people sounds crazy but w

hich paper

would you take, obviously the one that

hypes up your team and seems to

bring

down the other. FOOTBALL S

ONGS and

CHANTS, many of th

ese are hilarious and

show the fun side of fo

otball but w

hen

it comes to

the “Old Firm

” fun goes out

the window. Most o

f the songs su

ng at

“Old Firm” m

atches are now aimed at

inciting the oppositio

n by bringing the

“Irish Tro

ubles” into them and make no

mistake BOTH SIDES ARE A

S BAD AS ONE

ANOTHER. Of co

urse no one will agree

on this as each sid

e proclaims it is p

art of

their herita

ge to sing such songs.

The answer to

that is that it

is part

of EVERYONE in

the area’s herita

ge to

walk along a street on the day of a

football match and not be subjected to

the violence, bigotry or abuse that is

happening now after “Old Firm

” games.

Families, Housewives, P

ensioners etc,

have the right to

enjoy a day of rest

without all the hassle

that accompanies

an “Old Firm

” match.

We could rave on

and on about the negatives th

at happen

when the “Old Firm

” meet and the cost

to every one of us for th

e policing, fo

r the

ambulances and medics needed, fo

r the

upset of our daily lives and much, much,

more, suffice to say that....

If you spotted

someone trapped in a car cr

ash or a house

fire, would you sto

p to think...”I wonder if

that person is a diffe

rent religion to me?”

before trying to save them.

If you’ve got

to think of the answer , t

hen not only do

you have major problems....”WE A

LL DO.”

A Sandyhills Loan shark this week

admitted to illegally lending money

from his home in Glenturret Street

and at other addresses in the city at

Glasgow Sheriff Court.

Colin Morrison (46) provided several

illegal cash loans to a vulnerable

couple who were forced to move home

to escape his clutches after being

charged interest which amounted to

over 719,000%. Joseph Rankin and

his partner Angela Clements (who

suffers from the muscle wasting disease

Miotonic Dystrophy), borrowed cash

from Morrison and struggled to pay the

high interest levied on the loan. Often

the couple were left to scrimp on around

£15-00 a week as the pressure became

too much to pay off the loan, forcing

them to get deeper into the mire by

borrowing from other illegal lenders

just to pay off Morrison. Two other

women, Elizabeth Cassells and Georgina

Close also fell under the grasp of the

Sandyhills Shark as they both borrowed

money unaware that they would be

paying back extortionate rates of

interest. Appearing at Glasgow Sheriff

Court last Wednesday Morrison admitted

the charge as the Crown accepted a plea

of Not Guilty to assaulting Joseph Rankin

and a Breach of the Peace charge.

Morrison’s partner Roseann, was also

charged with lending money illegally

but her not guilty plea was accepted by

the Crown.

Prosecutor Richard Hannay told the

court that Mr Rankin and Ms Clements

borrowed between £10-00 and £400-00

from Morrison and it was estimated they

had paid back around £1500 a year for

six years.

It was stated that the couple would

borrow from other lenders just to meet

the repayments on Morrison’s loans.

Eventually it became too much for the

couple and they were forced to flee their

home to escape from the money lenders

in the East End. Elizabeth Cassells

borrowed cash from Morrison around

Christmas time in 2007 and continued to

do so for the next three years.

Widow, Georgina Close (50) also

borrowed sums but always repaid them

the following week at an Interest Rate

of 30%.

When the matter was reported to

the police a warrant was issued to

search the Morrison home in the quiet,

leafy, suburbs of Sandyhills and

officers found £7,230 stashed in his

wardrobe. Prosecutor Hannay stated

that Colin Morrison had not

been employed or in receipt of

benefits during the period in

question. Sheriff Martin Jones

told the accused, “Those who

prey on the poor, weak and

vulnerable in this way will be

severely treated by the courts.”

He also stated that Morrison

had pled guilty to a very

serious charge. Sentence was

deferred until later this month

for background reports and

Morrison was released on bail. He also

faces proceedings under the proceeds of

crime act.

WHY ARE THEY NOT IN “ACCORD”

PRIOR to being returned un-opposed

as First Minister, Alex Salmond joined

newly elected Shettleston MSP John

Mason and East End Councillors, Alison

Thewliss, David Turner and David McDonald at a meeting with carers and

service users at the closure threatened

Accord Centre in Dalmarnock. The Accord Centre which provides day

care service for people with learning disabilities is due to close to make way for

the Commonwealth Games car park and

athletes transport hub. The loss of this vital service has been

fought every step of the way by the East

Carers group, service users, families and

friends. The closure of the Accord centre

leaves the east end with just one day care

facility in Riddrie. At the meeting Carers presented the

first minister with information from minutes of a previous meeting of the

Community Health and Care Partnership

which explained that the service offered

at the accord would be replaced in a new/re-furbished building. This stands

in contrasts to the Councils current view

which is the close the Accord and not

replace the service. This is part of a wider

Council policy called Personalisation which

has seen a round of large cuts to people’s

personal budgets. David McDonald, the SNP spokesperson

on Social Care said of the meeting; “It

was great that the First Minister could join

carers and service users from the East End

at the Accord Centre and to give them his

support in their fight against Glasgow City

Council’s proposals to close the centre and

cut this much valued service. The East End of Glasgow must not lose out on services as a result of the

Commonwealth Games, the closure of

the Accord leaves just one day centre for

people with learning disabilities, and even

this centre is going to be outwith the price range for people as the Council are also introducing a series of brutal cuts to people’s care packages”. When the Re-Gen contacted, Councillor Matt

Kerr, the council’s Executive Member for Social Care, he said: “We have been working closely with the Accord carers for several months to find a solution

which is acceptable to everyone.“Alternative day care support has already been identified for a significant number of service users who have the highest and most complex support needs. The move to this centre will begin on Monday next

week. “The remaining services users have all been offered places in another centre and we are extremely confident there will be a positive conclusion for those who

continue to attend at the Accord Centre.“It’s

disappointing the First Minister didn’t feel

able to accept our invitation to meet today

when he was already in Glasgow to discuss

the Accord Centre, but the offer remains

open. “It is also regrettable the SNP government seems intent on treating this

issue as political football when they appear

to have no real understanding of what

needs to be done.”We at the Re-Gen are not in the least

concerned about anyone scoring political

points but what we are concerned about

is that a vulnerable group of people who

deserve much better are being passed from

pillar to post and could end up with no premises to meet their needs. What is called for here is for the two opposing parties to iron out a solution (such as using somewhere like the old Fernan Street premises which would be capable of housing the group either short term or even

long term). What we don’t want is for a group who

are dependent on stability to be messed

about. Get it sorted out quickly or we will

start going after those who don’t seem too

bothered as to where the Accord service

users are housed as long as they can say,

“We did our bit for the Party” We are

watching the outcome with interest so

please get it sorted as soon as possible.

East End Healthy Living Cen-tre, Crownpoint, they must be confident of beating Tranent. However, the Edinburgh club won 3-1 at Rutherglen Glen-cairn last time out. Harmony Row, back-to-back cup winners in recent years, completes the remaining quarter-final pairings with a home draw against Bonnyton Thistle or Edinburgh City. POSTPONEMENT

GLASGOW Girls F.C. have been presented with the Scottish Foot-ball Association’s Community Gold Award in a special ceremony at Hampden Park. The highest possible national achievement follows their Standard and Development categories, and highlights just how much work Glasgow Girls, founded in 1998, have put in over the past three years. Club officials have also received an S.F.A. Community Club flag. Meanwhile, there was more good news for Glasgow Girls after they received one of the Royal Bank of Scotland Community Force Initia-tive Awards of £6000. Aimed at charities and not-for-profit groups, the winners are decided by a public vote covering around 20 RBS areas.Glasgow Girls F.C. will see this cash boost as a major step in their ambitious plans to set-up a brand new facility within Budhill Park.

QUARTER-FINALS

EAST End boys’ club managers and coaches turned out in force for the first-ever Scottish Resource Show at Hampden Park. The programme contained a varied and in-depth selection of football products, over 40 exhibition stands, coaching innovations, and workshops.

RESOURCE SHOW

Braehead’s Sir Alex Fergu-son Park - home to Harmony Row Youth Club - has been the new home to a series of sessions featuring player nominations from clubs regis-tered with the Scottish Youth Football Association. As I revealed last month, the Under-17 age group, with two squads (Yellow and Blue), have already been success-ful after recording a 2-1 vic-tory against Australian tourists Melbourne Football Stars at Toryglen. The youngest age group involves Under-14s, and fin-ishes at Under-19 level. Many of the older squad will be aiming to find places within the SYFA Combined Region line-up, which is set for their annual game against hosts Mid-Ulster Juveniles at Easter.

Last April, the Irish visitors were defeated 2-0 at Petershill Park. Local teams have not been neglected in the search to establish new talent. Goalkeeper Justin Smith (Tower Hearts), plus Glasgow East End midfielder Kieran Reynolds and forward Mark Little, have emerged at Un-der-19 level. Wellhouse Boys’ Club have three players split between the two Under-17 squads - outstanding central defender Stevie Kerr, Thomas Porter and play-maker Kieran Gal-loway. Vale of Clyde Boys’ Club will be delighted to see Matthew Clifford and Denald Zekaj gain recognition in the Under-16 age group, whi le Kieran Hughes has been picked for the National Under-15 squad.

I understand the West Region are looking to enter more tour-naments abroad this summer following hugely popular visits to Hungary and Copenhagen last year. One group of Under-16 play-ers entered the Intersport Youth Football event at Kapas-vor, where they reached the quarter-finals before losing 2-1 against Pepesci, of Hungary. Another team participated in the Cup Denmark, and nar-rowly lost 1-0 to semi-final opponents Academia Moreno from Ecuador. Meanwhile, West Regional Secretary Jim Smith MBE is expecting plenty of corre-spondence as he deals with interest for the 2nd Glasgow Easter Cup (April 6-8), and the 11th Glasgow City Cup, which has action over two August weekends. The Easter tourney will in-

volve age levels 1993 to 1999, cater for 16 teams in each category, and take place at Glasgow Green. Teams who have players born from 1994 down to 2004 find the benefit of competing at the Glasgow City Cup provides excellent pre-season prepa-ration. Soccer Sevens have been arranged for Saturday, August 4 and Sunday,August 5. Tory-glen Regional Football Centre could be used as a venue alongside Glasgow Green and Greenfield Football Centre. The 11-a-side action will run from Friday, August 10, through to finals action on Sunday, August 12. For more information on how to apply go to: www.glasgow-citycup.org.uk.
