August 2010
Set alongside the River Wharfe, opposite the famous Ilkley Moor,
the Nell Bank Centre is sheltered by an ancient oak bluebell
woodland and is an ideal setting for almost any educational,
recreational or social event.
A perfect location for this six day musical theatre experience.
Welcome
This residential Masterclass will be of interest to anyone who wishes to immerse
themselves in an experience which will extend their knowledge base of stage
performance in musical theatre.
The material used will be core songs from Miss Saigon. You will use the material to
explore and create original ideas, and through this process, expand and enhance your
performance skills - a major focus of the week. You will be asked to identify and
analyse your perceived positive and negative points in areas of vocal skills, dialogue
delivery and stagecraft, and through individual and ensemble work, produce a ‘tool
box’ which you can access in any future stage presentation.
It will be intensive, emotionally challenging, hard work but very rewarding. We are
sure that you will gain hugely from the event.
We look forward to receiving your application soon

Accommodation and Catering
Ilkley is a very popular tourist town, especially in the summer months, and a week’s
accommodation can be very costly. With this in mind, bunkhouse accommodation is
provided on site. Whilst the accommodation is basic, experience has shown that this
adds to the whole team spirit of the group. As well as shower and toilet facilities
within the bunkhouse, there is a modern shower
block close to the bunkhouse, which affords
greater privacy.
Full English breakfast and an evening meal will be
cooked and served on-site by a caterer
recommended by the Centre. Serving a choice of
two main dishes and two desserts each day, they
will also provide a barbecue on the last evening.
Vegetarian and any other special diets can be catered for on request (please indicate
on your application form). Typical evening meals include cottage pie, spaghetti
Bolognese, lasagne, chilli, meat and potato pie, quiches. Typical desserts include
lemon meringue pie, sponge and custard, apple pie and ice cream, fruit crumble and
custard, fruit salad.
Rehearsals and Team Building
Throughout the course, there will be an emphasis on working as part of an ensemble.
To help achieve this, there will be team-building sessions led by staff at the Centre
and Andy Reiss. These will add even more depth to an already exciting few days.
Course Director - Andy Reiss
Andy’s career in musical theatre began with hard work and a commitment to learn.
Open auditions led to several jobs, then most notably a contract with Les Miserables
for the first resident production outside of the West End. The production in
Manchester was to begin Andy’s long association with Cameron Mackintosh and Les
Mis.
Andy stayed with Les Miserables throughout its residency at the Palace Theatre in
Manchester. He was thrilled to be offered the job of Assistant to the Resident
Director after such a short time on the professional scene and quotes the time spent
working with, and watching, the creative team on Les Mis - Ken Caswell and John
Caird - worth a three year course at any drama college.
Andy has also performed in Les Miserables in Dublin and Edinburgh and after a two
year break from the show he returned as the Resident Director for the first National
Tour. Andy can also be seen as the Paris Pimp in the 10th Anniversary Concert at the
Royal Albert Hall. He was very happy to be chosen as one of the fifty costumed
characters from a company chosen from the worldwide casts of Les Miserables.
He has played Che in Evita in the UK National Tour, and performed in Chess, both in
the UK and Norway. He was also Musical Director for Annie in Portsmouth and
Guildford, directed the first UK production of Seussical in Glasgow, and then was MD
for the same show at the Teatru Manoel in Malta in 2006. Andy has directed a new
production of The Rocky Horror Show in Malta, and directed Carousel in Basingstoke.
Most recently, Andy headed an international cast, playing the lead role(s) in Jekyll &
Hyde, again at the Teatru Manoel.
Although touring with Beyond the Barricade takes up the majority of his time, Andy is
also in demand as a director of Musical Theatre Workshops throughout the UK and
abroad. He developed the Les Miserables Residential Masterclass, with Cameron
Mackintosh/Creative Masterclass Company, giving people the opportunity to come to
the West End and enjoy a four day workshop which culminated in a performance on
the Les Mis set. Andy now gives the same knowledge and experience within his own
Masterclass, using not only Les Mis, but several other classic musicals.
With David Fawcett, he has also produced UK tours including Pure Puccini, Money
Money Money, Kingdom of Song, and Sing for Victory.
Feedback from previous workshops at Nell Bank
Overall experience: Enjoyable, nicely paced, I learnt more and developed.
Inspiring challenging, fun, emotional, fantastic.
Superb week. The mix of team-building, workshop,
guests and entertainment made for a great experience
that I will long remember. Fantabulous. It was a really
great experience and I really enjoyed it!!
Fan-bloody-tastic. Had an amazing week.
Very good. I enjoyed it a lot and have benefited from
the experience.
Really good and very enjoyable. Very well organised
and there was always something to do.
Brilliant! Met the loveliest people and had the best
time!
Fabulously outstanding! One of the best weeks of my
life.
Brilliant! Loved it, loved it, loved it
I had a great time, old friends, new friends, great
venue, wonderful food and a challenging, engaging
programme of workshops and sessions.
Workshop I liked the material we worked on - something for
everyone to do.
Andy - great mentor and teacher. Despite this being
my fourth workshop with him I still learn every time.
The mix of singing/blocking and building your ‘toolbox’
is just right for me.
I thought that the exercises that Andy got us to do to
get us into character were really amazing. Best
director ever!!!
Very informative and useful. The tools we learnt -
priceless!!
Andy opened up a deeper understanding of the show
which could never be heard elsewhere. It helped to
underpin the story when you heard the original text.
Loved it. Putting the songs together and staging them
was so exciting. Andy is amazing!
Fabulous. Loved the ideas thrown at us re
storyboarding.
The experience was great. Andy delivered an
enjoyable and challenging course, that left you feeling
exhausted but fulfilled.
The monologue exercise was brilliant - good to do and
enjoyable to watch.
Not only was it a great learning experience but also a
very nurturing one.
A huge thank you to all the people (who I know call
friends) who made me so welcome.
The exercises Andy had us do to become our
characters were brilliantly effective.
I’m also glad I did my monologue - I would have
regretted it had I not. Thank you.
Accommodation Basic but fine - as expected.
Fun and sociable - all part of the bonding, and amazing
views.
Bunkhouse - basic but clean and adequate. I’d prefer
the cost of the experience going to workshops,
guests/food etc than the accommodation
They were fine although the bunkhouses were a little
small.
The classrooms were fine. The bunkhouses were ok .
Basic but comfortable. Amphitheatre was awesome.
Adequate dorms. Middleton Room suitable for
purpose.
A little small. Showers and everything were fine.
Amphitheatre is beautiful.
Basic, but what I expected
No problem with these, basic yes but adequate for the
purpose.
Catering Lush. Like being looked after by Mum. Quality and
quantity both brilliant.
Excellent quality, well cooked, plenty available and
great friendly staff. Difficult to improve on.
Amazing - what can I say!
Amazing food and such nice people. They really went
out of their way for people - eg gluten free stuff.
Phenomenal. Incredible. Excellent! Fabulous - lovely
people and delicious food!
Gorgeous. I want their cook book!
Bloody fantastic.
Amazing, food was good, varied and they never
skimped.
Nell Bank teambuilding session Very good. A brilliant start to the week - lots of laughs.
Great ice-breaker and it had people enjoying
themselves from the start, and no-one feels left out.
Lovely staff too.
I thought it was really fun, helped us to get to know
each other better. Good fun and gelled group
together.
A great laugh and a great start. Very good. I made lots
of friends and got to know people this way.
Loved the assault course - so much fun, wanted to do
it again. Fun.
Great fun. Assault course was a bit scary but worth
while. Very good - Ruth was passionate - pulled
everyone together. Fun! And a bit wet. Great way to
get to know the team.
Really great, the staff of Nell Bank made the
experience worthwhile
