La Porte ISD celebrates 100-Year Anniversary with Block Party Oct. 1

La Porte High School seniors Tayler Timmons and Terrel Bernard were named Homecoming Queen and King, respectively, during halftime of the Sept. 30 game between the Bulldogs and South Houston Trojans. With a 56-17 victory, the Bulldogs delighted the crowd of fans gathered in celebration of La Porte ISD’s 100th anniversary. Tayler and Terrel were crowned by LPHS principal Todd Schoppe and 2015 Homecoming Queen Zoe Garner. Tommy Freeman, last year’s King, is in military service and was unable to attend the event. This year’s queen candidates also included Viara Brightmon, Kourtney Flood, Maya Hall, Triniti Kendzior, Melinee Mahoney, Savannah Rose and Kendal Zemanek. King candidates were Savon Bright, Kevrin Busby, Jonathan Flores, Jordan Land, Damien Phillips, Soul Schillaci and Sam Wilson. Betweenthefirstandsecondquarters,LaPorteHighSchool2003graduateandOlympic gold medalist Kerron Clement was honored with a standing ovation by the fans.ClementwasescortedontothefieldbySchoppeandMikeMosely,hisformertrack coach at La Porte High School. The Mighty Bulldog Marching Band and the Chatos performed following the game. In observance of the 100th anniversary, the Chatos wore an assortment of uniforms from throughout La Porte ISD history during their “Flashback Friday” performance.

The run-through sign at the Sept. 30 Homecoming game acknowledges the 100th anniversary of La Porte ISD, which was celebrated with a block party at Bulldog Stadium the following day.

Timmons, Bernard named Homecoming Queen and King at Sept. 30 game

La Porte ISD’s centennial celebration culminated with a 100th anniversary block party held at Bulldog Stadium on Saturday, Oct. 1. The event began with an opening ceremony at which Kerron Clement, 2003 La Porte High School graduate and 2016 Olympic gold medalist, was honored. On behalf of the Board of Trustees, Kathy Green, who served as mistress of ceremonies, presented Clement with a proclamation congratulating him on his success. Board President Dee Anne Thomson introduced Beverly Ferguson, regional directorofcommunityrelationsforCongressmanBrianBabin’soffice,whopresentedthe district with a Congressional Record recognizing La Porte ISD for this milestone and also recognized Clement for his accomplishments. LPHS Student Council president Nathan Evans gave the invocation. The La Porte High School JROTC presented the colors, and the LPHS Choir sang the national anthem. Following remarks from Superintendent of Schools Lloyd W. Graham, the cheerleadersledacheerandthebandplayedtheschoolfightsongandalmamater. Following the ceremony, games and activities sponsored by over 30 La Porte ISD schools and school organizations were available on the stadium track. A number of vendors also participated with items for sale. A display of La Porte ISD memorabilia depicting the different eras of the district’shistorywassetupinthefoyerofthenewLPHSfineartsfacility,andfoodtrucks lined the west side of the stadium parking lot. LPHS FFA takes prizes at Pasadena Livestock Show and Rodeo Sept. 25-26

La Porte Local Emergency Planning Committee (LEPC) representatives present Leo A. Rizzuto Elementary School with a check for $500 for having the largest percentage of students in attendance at the Sept. 24 Health and Safety Fair held at La Porte Junior High School. The fair was hosted by the City of La Porte, LEPC and La Porte ISD. In front are Rizzuto students Kennedy Gupton, second grade, and Kaler Carrizal, fourth grade, and on the middle row are Blake Schneider, fourth grade; Logan Fields, fifth grade; Ella Jessen, fifth grade; Grant Schneider, kindergarten; Arlyn Gutierrez, third grade; and Christyn Fields, kindergarten. LEPC presents $500 to Leo A. Rizzuto Elementary for Safety Fair attendance

Two La Porte FFA students took home the Pasadena Livestock Show and Rodeo Grand Champion prize for their livestock, while several of their counterparts placed in, or near, the top 10. The show took place Sept. 25 and 26 at the Pasadena Convention Center. In the turkey category, Kyler Long was named grand champion for his tom and hen, while Kylie Nutt was named grand champion for her rabbits. Leah Liles placed third overall in the rabbit category, while Katie Wyatt and Jessica Harris placed seventh and eighth, respectively, in the goat category. In the lamb competition, La Porte High School winners were Leah Liles, fourth; Haylee Hister, sixth; Ashlynn Lambright, 10th; and Alexis Kraatz, 11th. Ryan McMurray placed 12th in the steer category. Poultry competition winners were Colby Dodson, eighth, and Isabelle Taylor, ninth.

Olympic gold medalist Kerron Clement visits La Porte ISD campuses

Kerron Clement stops by Shaneka Robinson’s second grade classroom at La Porte Elementary School on Sept. 30. Clement also had the opportunity to speak to third, fourth and fifth graders at the campus during his recent visit.

Clement shows his gold medal to members of the LPHS cross country team. Clement went to the school early to see the boys track team off as they left for a meet in Round Rock that afternoon.

Community celebrates La Porte ISD 100th Anniversary at block party Oct. 1
