Healey Wings by Curt Carlson, President
Here we are at the twilight of the driving season. It’s likely that by the time you read this, you’ll have changed the oil, vacuumed and washed your baby, and you’re probably close to putting it away to slumber for the winter. Driving events are winding down and after a successful year, the Healey Club is preparing to celebrate and party. Our annual Banquet and Business meeting is coming up in just a couple of weeks. Please look elsewhere in this newsletter for details. Before that, we have the November PIE meeting. This time we thought we’d give Joseph’s Grill in St. Paul a try. The Richfield American Legion has served us well these past few months, but I am eager to try something new. Of course, it’s you who decide so if you want your voice to be heard, you have to show up!
As we wind down the season, I want to thank each and every one of you for your participation, your volunteerism, your support, your opinions, and your enthusiasm. It’s you that make the MAHC who we are; respected in the Twin Cities, promoters of the Healey marque, hosts of fun events for each other and for the collectible car community at large, and providers of mutual support through the sharing of knowledge and expertise. Most notably I want to thank my fellow officers and volunteers for their contributions and guidance. This past year we grew in so many ways. From a transition and changing-‐of-‐the-‐guard in newsletter duties, to a change in monthly meeting location, we’ve survived and thrived, and I feel great about the future of the MAHC and have confidence as I leave it in the capable hands of Dave Herreid.
As I signed in a year ago with my first ‘Wing It’ article, I’ll sign out with my last. Healey On! And thank you!

Thanks Adopt-‐A-‐Highway Volunteers!
Thank you to nine MAHC members who represented the club during the fall Adopt-‐A-‐Highway pickup Oct. 10. It was the first year that warm, sunny weather highlighted both highway cleanups since the club began its volunteer civic involvement in 2005. From the left, volunteers enjoying the day, a doughnuts and coffee breakfast and a free lunch afterward were: Carl and Betty Stine, Kim and Steve Rixen, Eileen and Gary Wetzel, Nancy Lauser and Tom Wolters. Greg Lauser took the picture that featured Healeys in the background owned by Wetzels, Wolters and Lausers. Rixens' Healey and Stines' Miata also made the trip.

President Carlson called the meeting to order as a live band was playing early 70s guitar noodling. A door closed, yet the band played on, providing a muted sound track to the meeting. The meeting started with a recap of last month’s events:
• The Jack Pine Sprints: the weather was good, Rich Stadther was fast, and it was a fun event. Rich noted that one of his secrets is that his car can corner; Corvettes can’t.
• The Norwegian picnic, hosted by Fred and Sandy, gathered 40 people up north. It was fun and relaxed. During the P.I.E. meeting someone asked, “So what makes it Norwegian?” Was there lefse? How about lutefisk? Answers of what made it Norwegian included Aquavit, but despite Gary’s assertion, Aquavit just sounds Swedish to me. June, however, spoke truth, at least to my Norwegian heart, by saying “butter”… helbreder, um yah, yah!
• Wheels and Wings was on the same day as the Norwegian picnic; however few attended. Word is the air show was good, and the cars were mainly American.
• The Elkhart Vintage Festival: 17 Minnesota Healey Club members made the trip. Dan Powell thought next year’s September P.I.E meeting should be there. Reminiscing went on, much of it centering on Tanqueray. My tape recorder suddenly picked up racer trash talk (note to self: next year I’m there).
• The Waumandee Hillclimb was a success. See last month’s worshipping accounts. Just think, only 10 and ½ months until the next one.
• The MG club hosted the InterMarque Picnic. Highlights included a moped gang of about 200-‐plus passing by one at a time. The MG club did right by those who attended.
Upcoming Club Events:
• Adopt-‐A-‐Highway October 10th. 9 a.m. start (with donuts) and concluding with tasty food. • On the 17th of October there is an open house at BMC. With a name like that how can you resist? • The Fall Color Tour on Sunday the 18th, with Waumandee PlowFest thrown in for good cheer. This is a Tom
Hazen designed event; enough said. • The InterMarque group is sponsoring a first ever fall event. A drive to Aamodt’s Apple Farm and a chance to
chill with friends. Old Business:
• Where to meet for P.I.E.? This has been almost a biblical cause. Thrown out of the Officers’ Club by a power bigger than BMC. Left to wander (hopefully not for 40 years) looking for a new clubhouse. Our President has tried to deal with our (ge)metednes*, but we are a fickle crowd. This will no doubt be an ongoing journey; however, next month St. Paul. Well, actually Joseph’s which is just across the river from downtown on Wabasha (see the newsletter for more info).
• The Roseville VFW is currently being researched by a select group of Healey spies posing as Triumph members. They will report back; stay tuned.
• A select group within our club has researched the Banquet site and activities and they have a solution. All that is left is for us to let them know that on November 14th, a Saturday, you will attend with $20 per person. The location is Joseph’s near downtown St Paul. There will be a silent auction. (Oh, good… a chance to clean the garage and pass along a priceless artifact for a good cause…. Be aware that a large piece of Healey “Art” may be soon in your or your spouse’s, or maybe in your soon-‐to-‐be-‐ex-‐spouse’s garage.)
Some new news
• A Sprite Project is an on again, off again.... did I just hear the song “God Damn the Pusher Man” by Ten Years After in the other room? Well, enough said.
• Ditto for the BJ8.

• Our national delegate Eileen will be going to the National Delegate Meeting. She will be asked, “What was our favorite event?” Well, although a lot of fun was held here and there, maybe even in your backyard, the overwhelming answer was “Waumandee.”
• Steve Greenwood, our master of the checking account, informed us that…. “Waumandee was in the black!” …Wait! There is more. The total combined income from Amery 1, Amery 2, and Waumandee is $2,000 this year. As a result the club will need to start spending money!
• Jim Kriz, our keeper of the gate, noted that our membership is at 103. As of October our renewals have ended, sorry to those who couldn’t find a stamp. But next year’s membership notices will soon be in the mail, or on the Internet, or whatever kids do these days. Time to re-‐up.
• Our national delegate Eileen Wetzel proposed an interesting vision. She wondered out loud about hosting conclave in 2017. It’s been 14 years since we hosted our last national convention. Some attending the meeting encouraged her to have another drink. But Eileen countered with the unique concept of a conclave located in South Dakota. Your humble scribe is now noticing a little panic in the room; Kim wisely notes that doing a convention long distance is difficult at best. Another says, “during Sturgis?” One member noted, “Aren’t we hosting Rendezvous in 2017?” Curt thought this might be something to discuss further at our next P.I.E. meeting. All this gives us time, to pause, to breathe deeply and clear our mind. But what about 2018? Stay tuned.
President Carlson adjourned the meeting. * The word is Old English. In attendance: Curt Carlson Jim Kriz and Healey Dan Powell Steve Chirpich Nancy and Greg Lauser Kim and Steve Rixen Lisa Culver Andy Lindberg Gary and Barb Ronning Sue and Steve Greenway Jeff Lumbard Rich and Liz Stadther Dave Hatzung Jim Manion Carl and Betty Stine Dave Herreid and Daphne Walmer Dick Mathews Greg and Suzanne Willodson Dave and Susan Jensen Scott McQueen Tom Wolters Jeff Johnk Tom and June Moerke Gary and Eileen Wetzel

Taking Europe by Storm By Dan Powell
In mid-April an expeditionary force embarked on a mission from the Minnesota Austin Healey Club to invade Germany and the Netherlands. Volunteers included Jeff Lumbard, Mike Manser, Greg and Suzanne Willodson, Dan Powell, and a prior Concours Healey owner and frequent crew member at Road America, Brian Crombie.
Our mission, which we all gladly accepted, was to visit the Healey Museum, view and conquer the Essen Techno-Classica car show and the Louwman Museum in The Hague, and various establishments in Amsterdam rumored to be
vendors of fermented hop products. Long story short…
mission accomplished!
Healey Museum: The founder of the museum, Hans van de Kerkhof, was as gracious as ever, spending hours with us showing us unique Healeys currently on display, several short movies including period footage of Donald Healey at home, narrated by Bic Healey (original sound track had been lost over the years). Several books of photos, original drawings, etc. were brought out and explained in
detail, including photos providing proof of the actual cause of the Healey crash at Le Mans on the way back from scrutineering. It’s unlikely that five past presidents and three current board members from any club will ever again be at the Healey Museum at the same time.
The Essen show was over the top. Several of us had been there before, but the scale of the event is overwhelming. Think of the Minneapolis auto show times 15-20… we were there for one and one-half full days and still didn’t see everything.
1955 BN 3/4 six cylinder prototype. One of one.
Nov 2015 The Healey Enthusiast Page 7 Quick synopsis: nearly every classic Aston Martin was there and for sale (don’t think any are actually driven anymore); prices for all marques are over the top silly, and the level of “restoration” is somewhat questionable. A 100S replica had hardware stove bolts securing the windscreen brackets; an Aston Martin DB2/4 (one piece windshield, similar to the car in “The Birds”) had ill-fitting trim on the front fenders by the headlights showing mounting holes to the rear and being mounted crooked, showed that the car had been resprayed without removing the trim… and it could be yours for only $350,000!
The Louwman Museum in The Hague (45 minute train ride south of Amsterdam) was visited by Greg, Suzanne, and
me as the others have been there once or twice before. We were there six hours including a very nice relaxing lunch and still felt a bit rushed. This museum started as a private collection by the elder Mr. Louwman, the first Dodge dealer in Europe. Apparently they sold lots of cars as just about every vehicle in the collection is either “the best of…,” “the only one,” or “the winner of…” (Le Mans, etc.). One of our favorites was the Talbot-Lago tear-drop car. I’ve seen it in pictures, but in
person it comes alive as moving art.

A recommendation from Mike Lynch: The best Austin-‐Healey parts supplier I have ever known is back in business. He was shut down for a number of years but just reopened after selling his architecture firm. He has a huge supply of good used parts, carries new parts, and is very knowledgeable and dependable.

A Gorgeous Drive on the Fall Color Tour by Dave Herreid
The Fall Color Tour started briskly on a cool Sunday morning a few weeks ago. I of course was a little late and lost (my co-‐pilot was absent for the day). When what do I hear, a honk from a new red Jaguar being followed by a line of interesting cars all going the opposite direction. Then into a roundabout I go, coming out between Scott’s E-‐type jag and Fred’s and Sandy’s blue BJ8 and we’re on our way. We head south on 61, then a left into Prescott and finally grooving on Hwy. 35 going south along the Mississippi. At this point I notice a large cabin cruiser up ahead (albeit on a trailer) leading our section of cars. As Scott is my witness that boat was doing 50, maybe more. It’s a fall weekend and those of us not weighed down by must-‐do chores before winter, and even some who are, can be found driving through the brilliant autumn Wisconsin landscape. The boat takes a right and we continue on to Stockholm for a little breakfast fare, a chance to stretch, chat, and get our instructions from Tom Hazen, our guide. His only commandment is to not turn if you can’t see the car behind you. Walky-‐talkies are handed out to each car and we’re off. This is my first Fall Color Tour and to those of you who haven’t done one, this is the mellowest drive possible. As Tom drives the pace car he gives us occasional notices of upcoming turns, potholes, and points of interests. If you like coulee roads, farm fields hemmed in by hardwood forests, and ice cream for a dollar a scoop, this is the drive for you. By afternoon the weather was warm, the roads in fine shape, and the cars all doing their thing, but we were a little behind schedule, so Tom modified the drive to make it to Waumandee in time to catch the town picnic. They do picnics a little different in Waumandee; you see they have a cannon that shoots big pumpkins a long way and they like to use it. A couple of farmers made it out of surplus equipment. I noticed big and small kids all smiling while waiting for the next pumpkin to be shot off into the woods, maybe a quarter of a mile away. I wonder what the deer think? We were on our own for the return trip. In passing I mentioned to Dan Powell that I wanted to check out a tavern in the Town of Cream, he decided to join me. The name of the tavern is “The Ponderosa.” With the Packers on the TV, Dan and I talked about what a neat car club we’re part of, wishing summer was longer and winter shorter. And then it was time for a brisk drive home. Color Tour attendees included:
Fred Ambli and Sandie Swenson Scott McQueen Jane Schuler Curt Carlson June and Tom Moerke Dale Simpson Alex Donaldson Tim Oudin Paul Simpson Danny Foster Tom and June Moerke Liz and Rich Stadther Jane Frost Dan Powell Betty and Carl Stine John Gallo Cathy and Ken Reiner Sandy Swenson David and Denise Hammer Tom Reinke Julie and Tom Wolters Jim Hanley Kim and Steve Rixen Jim Woodle Tom Hazen Gina Rossi Ron Woodle Dave Herreid Giorgio Rossi Jason Zais Dick and Sally Leighninger Fred Schuler Mike Zais

Healey Restoration Update & Photos by Mike Manser
November 1, 2015. As I write this update I am sitting in a long-‐term rehabilitation facility in Cedarburg Wisconsin called Fourintune. Actually, it is more like a spa because it was not mandatory, everyone takes care of my every need, and I am surrounded by supportive family in my Healey brothers and sisters. I have a 1954 brother next to me and a new guy…a tricarb two seater. I love it. I have had a wonderful long life having been born in England on November 27, 1953 to wonderful parents and having lived in the United States since that time. I should note that I have had people supporting me and taking care of me throughout my entire life. I call them staff. Due to my age I forget many details but do remember Bill Lillibridge serving as my staff many years ago followed by Dan Wolters. I had a different staff person attending to my needs about two years ago (Mike Manser) but that didn’t last more than about 5 months, likely the shortest tenure for a staff member in my life, and I am sure he didn’t like me. He was very happy with me at first when I gave him and his dad a two-‐mile ride upon my arrival in Texas. Turns out his dad has been a Healey enthusiast since the mid-‐1970s when he purchased a BJ8. During that drive it was a sunny winter day, my bug catcher was in the down (racing) position, and Mike and his dad were all smiles. That was the only happy memory with this staff person. Even though he provided me with a nice dry place to live and next to one of my younger brothers, the BJ8, he never drove me again. He then pulled me apart completely over two months and then sat looking at me every few nights drinking gin and tonics mumbling semi-‐incoherently statements like “I wonder if…”, “…one year with help, five years without…”, and “Wife needs attention too.” Shortly after this he packed me up and drove me to Fourintune and left me here…presumably for dead. I say good riddance to that staff person. Life here was not easy at first but the staff members attending to me genuinely wanted to help me get into better shape. My motor was rebuilt to 100 M specifications, transmission and overdrive were rebuilt, and my rear-‐end now has 3.9 gearing. All of this will allow me to keep up easily with traffic and not work too hard at higher speeds. My chassis received
considerable attention. Early and correct Healey 100/4 front fender wells and proper replacement floor pans (“100” stamping in metal) were welded into place, new stronger sills that were curved properly were added, and everything was cleaned, primed, and painted. I will never have problems with frame sag again. My facelift was performed perfectly. New fenders and OEM aluminum
trunk and bonnet felt like a golden robe being draped over me. Gorgeous Olde English White color, black seats with white piping, and black carpet were then added. My rare two-‐piece dash is the proper OEW color with a silver oval area for my
Nov 2015 The Healey Enthusiast Page 13 instruments. It is clear that the staff attending to me wanted me to be original but not concourse quality, which is fine since it means I will be driven regularly. I retain many of my original body number “887” parts…yes, I was one of the first 1000 big Healeys built. I must admit that I am in better shape now than I have ever been. About three weeks ago Mike (yes, my former staffer) visited this facility and my current staff person (Tom Kovacs) allowed him to take me for a ride. That 43-‐mile drive on Wisconsin back roads amidst the fall colors was one of the best drives I have ever had. To make Mike jealous I purred like a kitten, drove perfectly, and didn’t pee any oil on his feet or the ground. He was jealous…couldn’t believe it was me…the same car. He said I was beautiful. With this revitalization and this new staff person (Tom) I am very much looking forward to another 60+ years of happiness. I am very happy with the rehabilitation and will keep you updated. Healey On. UPDATE: Hold on!!! Remember my former staff member Mike? He is actually still my staff member!! He didn’t cast me aside but instead was the one who decided to get help from these other staff…to give me a second life! In a day or two I will take a cab ride to Austin, Texas where I overheard that I will enjoy trips to Hill Country wineries, trips to gin distilleries, and host Minne-‐snowtans. What a wonderful change in perspective.
