MEET MIKEYMikey is the newest member of TheCenter’s prevention team and willhelp launch the Shaken BabySyndrome Prevention Program in alleight Sacramento birthing hospitalsand 24 Home Visitation programs.Mikey is a life-like training ShakenBaby Syndrome simulation doll. Thenew program is an evidence-basedtraining program on infant crying forall new parents in Sacramento(18,000 annually) and is expected toreduce the rates of Shaken Baby by 50%. The project is funded by a $50,000 grant from the Sutter Medical Center SacramentoCommunity Collaborative BenefitsProgram.

Shaken Baby Syndrome is the injuryof multiple body parts including thebrain, eyes and bones caused by theviolent shaking of an infant or youngchild. There may be many factorswithin a family or care giving facilitythat lead to violent shaking, but typically the “last straw” is incon-

solable infant crying. Babies do notdie of crying, but they do die frombeing shaken. These needless infantdeaths can be prevented and theShaken Baby Syndrome PreventionProgram is designed to do just that.

When Mikey is shaken, the potentiallife threatening and damagingeffects of Shaken Baby Syndromecan be seen. Mikey’s clear skull hasindicators that flash a red light whendamage has occurred. The effects of shaking a baby can range fromblindness, hearing loss, delayedmotor skills, paralysis, and internal bleeding to even death.

The Center’s staff uses Mikey todemonstrate to audiences how susceptible infants are to ShakenBaby Syndrome. Mikey has been asobering educational component to The Center’s prevention efforts as audiences have been stunned to learn how easily and quickly irreparable damage can occur.I
