The Final Chart Scan ..................................................................................... 192 This book is © Lonnie Readioff 2018, though the original charts that this book is derived from were first produced in Melody Maker (1956-1969).

The book is presented on an as-is basis. While every effort has been made to make sure it is free from defects I will not be held responsible if it does nasty things to your computer. Though it shouldn’t. But if it does, it’s not my fault.

I’d like to thank my wife for encouragement in this project.

Notes on the text As with any book of this nature there are mistakes inside its pages. I would be stupid to think that there were none. So, if you spot a mistake and let me know, I’ll correct it and you’ll get your name in the book. Drop me an email at [email protected] and I’ll check out the error, though I also welcome praise and criticism, both for the book and the layout of the book.

Various publication errors, including incorrect positions, have been identified and corrected by reference to the original chart issues. Corrections to titles, label details and other information by reference to internet searchers and copies of the original records. Titles may be different to other publications, as I have tried to focus on the exact titles used on the cover where at all possible.

The Melody Maker Singles Charts – A History

31 Mar 1956 First chart. Although this is really the chart before the first as the first printed chart was the next one, on 7 April. This chart was printed as last week positions alongside the first chart. As such, this chart contains 16 positions, with positions 10, 15, 18 and 19 missing.

7 Apr 1956 The first chart, a Top 20, as published. 4 Apr 1962 The chart, almost on it’s sixth birthday, expands to a Top 30. 15 Sep 1962 The chart expands again, this time to a Top 50. 31 Dec 1966 A Top 30 only is published. 1 Apr 1967 The chart contracts to a Top 30, though the Top 50 is still

compiled internally. Chart hyping in what was one of the most recognised charts – and most widly published – was becoming a problem and so Melody Maker decided to keep positions 31-50 internal only to try and spot odd sales patterns.

27 Sep 1969 A new magazine, Music Business Weekly, is launched and prints the Top 50 Melody Maker chart. The chart for 20 Setember shows 43 positions, calculated, as the very first chart was, from the published last week positions. Positions 31, 32, 41, 44, 46, 47 and 48 are therefore missing.

Several charts went unpublished and are treated as frozen charts. The dates are 29 Dec 1956, 28 Dec 1957, 27 Dec 1958, 26 Dec 1959, 9 Dec 1962, 28 Dec 1963, 30 Dec 1967, 28 Dec 1968 and 27 Dec 1969.

Title Listing This is an alphabetical listing of titles, sorted by their first letters. Any title starting with “A” or “The” is listed under the second word. Titles starting with brackets are listed first under the first letter in the brackets. Some titles or artists may be truncated from how they appear on the label for reasons of space. The peak and the year of first chart entry of the title is shown. Where the same title charted in the same year, the entries are sorted by the highest position reached by that track.
