akersfield resident LisaKarpe doesn’t have multi-ple sclerosis (MS), but sheis making a difference inthe lives of people with MS
in Kern County, around SouthernCalifornia, and across the nation.
Karpe, whose mother was diag-nosed with MS and lived in a con-valescent home for 17 years beforepassing, said, “My mom was sickfrom day one. It’s a hard diseaseand it’s an expensive disease.” As aresult, she decided to give back, and is now going to be honored forher volunteer work by the SouthernCalifornia & Nevada Chapter of theNational Multiple Sclerosis Society.
Karpe will be presented with the“Volunteer of the Year” award dur-ing a board meeting February 24,2011 in Los Angeles.
Since 2004, she has been instru-mental in both fundraising andproviding support to people withMS.
Karpe has been participating inWalk MS/donates to the GoldenCircle, the major donor gift cam-paign for the Chapter; has beeninvolved in the Bakersfield AgainstMultiple Sclerosis (BAMS) groupthat aims to raise awareness, alongwith funds for programs, servicesand cutting-edge research; has per-sonally stewarded foundation sub-missions in Bakersfield on behalf ofthe Southern California & NevadaChapter; and, has dedicated manyhours to the Chapter’s Caring Con-nection program.
Through the Caring Connection
program, Karpe visits several peo-ple with MS who are either living ina skilled nursing facility or arehomebound and unable to go outinto the community. Not only doesshe provide emotional support andcompanionship, she also becomesan advocate to those people shevisits.
The Southern California & Neva-da Chapter, which serves nearly19,000 people living with MS, hon-
ors one person each year with the“Volunteer of the Year” award forhis or her outstanding volunteerservice and contribution to movingus closer toward a world free of MS.

his is not another “New Year’s Res-olution” article — I quit writingabout them several years agowhen I realized I never kept ‘emanyway. I want to talk about the
true driving force behind all resolutions— motivation.
While we can have great intentions tokeep our resolutions, the true drivingforce will be motivation. Without that, your best intentions won’t stand a chanceto see the new year.
Our biggest roadblocks are ourselves;we continue to make excuses and comeup with reasons why we cannot fit fitnessinto our lives.
I don’t mean to make light of anyone’spersonal issues or medical conditions, but when we use them as a roadblock fornot doing ANYTHING, that’s where I fig-ure this person isn’t really interested inbecoming fit and healthy anyway.
I am continually amazed at the idea thatthe minor roadblocks life throws us pres-ent colossal obstacles — and I include
myself in that category, by the way.I’ll give you some examples I have heard
in the past:Excuse: I had a baby/have
children/busy withkids.
Answer: So? And?What are 5 a.m.’s foranyway? Slip that fit-ness hour in between5-6 a.m.
Excuse: My beerbelly gets in the way— but I love beer.
Answer: Give upyour beer! I assumethere’s no way I canhelp him unless hestops drinking it.
Excuse: I am a dia-betic and also have
arthritis.Answer: Did you know that exercise
helps manage blood sugar and keep yourweight in check? And, moderate physical
activity helps decrease fatigue andstrengthens muscles, bones and surelyhelps joint flexibility too.
Excuse: I have a bum knee, bad ankle,my doctor told me to rest it (and that pre-scription was 5 years ago.)
Answer: You have one good knee andankle left so drag it in to the gym with therest of your body!
The point I am trying to make is that Ican find a hundred ways of telling youthat you “can do it.”How many times do Ineed to say it? Because your “one way ofcannot” will trump my “can do.”
I don’t want to validate your excuses fornot succeeding. Motivation comes fromyour desire to want to change. It comesfrom inside you. Yes, I can find ways ofpulling it out of you and proving you cansucceed but — only if you want to.
You know you can do this or do some-thing.
I had a past client who came to me sev-eral years ago, nonathletic, never playedany sports or engaged in fitness classes.
Her motivation level was zero — onlybecause she thought she couldn’t do any-thing because she never had before.
Within a few months she changed from“I can’t” to “I can” — she always consid-ered herself as someone “who couldn’texercise.” Yes, she went from overweight, nonathletic to someone who was physi-cally capable of performing the exercisesat hand. I didn’t change her — shechanged her outlook and the motivationto succeed kicked in.
I have misjudged several of my clientsbut, if you’ve done what I do long enough, the pattern of excuses just keep repeatingthemselves. I start to assume that theywill never follow through on the advice Igive them to get over their excuse hurdles.
Motivation starts with your belief thatyou can or cannot succeed. Look at exer-cising as a list of choices you have. Youdon’t have to work towards becoming asize 0 runway model — or a professionalwrestler because, let’s be real, most of ourchoices fall between those two extremes.
If you need to lose 5 to 10 pounds ofbody fat next year and you have no physi-cal, medical, or psychiatric reason whyyou can’t reach this goal — and your notbeing held hostage and forced fed pep-peroni pizza — your thyroid gland is ingood working order and you’re not one ofthose people who gets into her car todrive to the gym and end up in Tahiti, then I think there’s a chance motivationwill have a chance with you.
It’s okay to hit a brick wall now andthen, cheat a bit on your eating, skip a dayor two of exercise, just don’t let that oldway of thinking cloud your motivation toget back on track.
You can do it, I know you can! Oops, Isaid it again. Guess I am part cheerleadertoo. Comes with the territory.
Have a healthy Happy New Year!Questions or comments? You can email
me, Gina Rolow [email protected].
