CINCINNATI A 17th-century ChineseQing Dynasty cannon, estimated at$10,000-$15,000, brought $149,500today at Cowan's Historic Firearms
and Early Militaria auction. The priceincludes a 15% buyers premium.
Two bidders battled competitively fornearly five minutes over the cannon, which was the opening lot of the sale.Made in 1695, the cannon is significantin that its design was inspired by thenoted Flemish Jesuit Missionary andImperial confidant Ferdinand Verbiest.
Only 17 cast guns bearing Verbiestsname are known to exist, and most arein European museums. The cannonwas taken from the Ha Ta gate during
the Boxer Rebellion and the multina-tional attack on the walls of the TartarCity, Aug. 13 and 14, 1900. After theevent, Colonel Webb C. Hayes, son ofPresident Rutherford B. Hayes, shipped the gun to the United Statesas a war souvenir.
A similar cannon sold for 45,000($74,400) in London in June 2010

The low-cut black taffeta dress thattransformed Lady Diana Spencer froma demure girl to fashion icon PrincessDi has fetched 192,000 pounds at anauction. She wore it at her first publicengagement with the Prince of Walesin 1981. Estimated by Kerry Taylor
Auctions to fetch 50,000 pounds, it sawheavy bidding before the hammercame down in favour of FundacionMuseo de laModa, aChilean mu-seum.
The dressp r o v o k e dsome out-rage at thattime for itsdeep neck-line. When Diana bent forward as sheemerged out of her car at the RoyalOpera House, the photographers wentinto a frenzy, making Prince Charles toremark: "Have all the fashion writersfinished?"
Diana's dress has had as chequeredhistory as its wearer's iconic and tur-bulent times. It was initially assumeddestroyed by Diana, but later found ina bin in the garage at the home of thedesigners of the dress, David and Eliz-abeth Emanuel.
In the weeks after her engagement,Diana lost much weight and returnedthe dress to the designers to be al-tered. But the alterations were so dras-tic they thought it better to re-make a
new version for her.
Auctioneer Kerry Taylor told TheTimes: "They kept the original and for-got about it - only re-discovering it quiterecently. It was rumored that thePrincess had destroyed the blackdress. It was sold together with an orig-inal copy of the invoice, fashionsketches and contemporary photo-graphs of her wearing it."
Jorge Yarur of the museum in Santi-ago, Chile, who bought the dress, hasannounced that upon his death, notonly this gown, but all the other impor-tant Diana dresses he owns will be do-nated to Kensington Palace, Taylorsaid.

Director Alfred Hitchcock was famousfor his meticulous preparation. In storyboards, every scene was meticulouslydepicted, every camera angle plotted.
The actual filming, Hitchcock re-marked, could be anti-climactic, as bythe time of the shoot hed already seenthe movie in his mind so many times.
Only one Hitchcock story boardforhis 1950 film Stage Frighthas evercome on the open market. Bonhamswill auction it at a London sale ofPrinted Books & Manuscripts on June7, when its expected to sell for$33,0000-$50,000.
Stage Fright wasnt one of Hitch-
cocks most highly regarded efforts. Al-though it starred Marlene Dietrich, itonly met with mixed success.
In later years, Hitchcock would cite itsfalse flashback sequence as one ofthe two biggest blunders of his cine-matic success.
All the same, this pre-production pro-vides fascinating insights into the leg-endary directors creative process, demonstrating how closely the produc-
tion hewed to the plan, and the varietyof ways in which Hitchcock altered it,as circumstanceand inspirationde-manded.
