Practices for higher Purification

They are assigned to meditator (monk)

They are not compulsory but optional



Thirteen kinds of AsceticPractices 1. The refuse – rag-wearer’s practice

(paṃsukūlikaṅgaṃ)

Two statements are required:

‘I refuse robes given by householders or Iundertake the refuse-rag-wearer’s practice’



Robes from:

1 A charnel ground

2 from shop

3 from street

4 from a midden

5 from a childbed

6 an ablution cloth 7 from washing place



8 One worn going to and returning from

9 One scorched by fire

10 One gnawed by cattle

11 One carried as a flag

12 A robe from a shrine

13 One from a consecration

14 One produced by supernormal power

15 One from a highway



16 One borne by the wind

17 One presented by deities

18 One from the sea



Grades: 1 the strict

2 the medium

3 the mild



Benefits: 1 no suffering due to protecting

2 he exits independent of others

3 there is no fear of robbers

4 there is no craving connected with use

Or it inspires confidence.

It produces the fruits of fewness of wishes.

The right way is cultivated.

A good example is set to later generations.

How to practice The volition of the act of undertaking is

the ascetic practice

All have the function of eliminatingcupidity, and they manifest themselveswith the production of non-cupidity.

Approximate cause: they have the noble

states consisting of fewness of wishes, andso on.

Are all these practices equal to self-mortification?



Place of undertaking

1. If the blessed One is alive, practiceshould be undertaken in the blessed

One’s presence.

2. Undertaken in the presence of aprincipal disciple.

3. In the presence of one whose cankers

are destroyed, non- returner etc.

4. On knows the Tipitakas



5. One knows two Pitakas

6. One knows one Pitaka

7. One knows one collection

8. One knows a teacher commentaries

9. If such persons are not available, it

should be done in the presence of anobserver of an ascetic practice



10. If not, one swept out the shrineTerrance, they can be undertaken seated

in a reverential posture as throughpronouncing them in the Fully enlightenedOne’s presence.

11. it is also permitted to undertake them

by oneself .
