Hi all
What a fabulous term it has
been! As we approach the end
of the school year we reflect on
those who have made significant
contributions to our work.
This week we recognised at our
Community Night some of the
volunteers that have made a
significant impact over an
extended period. Shane Barnard
and Sonia Harvey have
contributed countless hours to
our Pedal Prix program over the
years. They have received the
2018 Minister for Education’s
Volunteer Award and we thank
them greatly for their efforts.
Many students have benefited
from their generosity and
determination.

Tara Graham-Cochrane was also
recognised for her contribution
to our Nature Play spaces. Tara’s
vision has led the Facilities Team
through the design, project
development and completion of
Phase 1 of the program. Her
generous donation of time,
professional knowledge and skill
throughout the program has
been amazing and we thank her
greatly for her input.
Classes have sent out thank you
messages and certificates for
over 40 volunteers who have
offered their time and energy to
add great value to our school’s
learning programme. From
listening to reading through to
camps, excursions, events and
beyond, the contribution that
our volunteers make is
invaluable. Thank you, you are
appreciated!
School Improvement Plan
2019
Governing Council and staff
have recently endorsed the 2019
School Improvement Plan (SIP)
which will soon be on our
website. It details our main
priorities for improvement
within literacy and numeracy
and sits within the Department
for Education’s template. We will
also be developing some other
important strategic directions
next year and I look forward to
keeping you connected as we
go.
Our students continue to
achieve high results in literacy
and numeracy. Even from this
strong base we still can identify
areas for improvement.
Essentially our improvement
areas for 2019 will include:
Reading comprehension
(inference)
Writing (vocabulary and
spelling)
Numeracy (problem
solving, reasoning and
understanding)
Wellbeing for Learning
Strategy
Information
Communication Strategy
(infrastructure and
networking)
Learner Support
Framework (intervention
programmes and
processes)
On a personal note, I would like
to thank you for the warm
welcome that you have offered
me over the past few months. I
am really looking forward to
developing the strategic
directions in 2019 with staff,
students and community.
We wish the Year 7 graduates all
the best as they head into high
school and look forward to
hearing of their achievements as
we do for other students and
families who will not be at CPS in
2019.
It was wonderful to see
everyone out this week at
Community Night and
Graduation celebrations. Thank
you again for everything that
you do to support the young
people in our care and the
dedicated adults with whom we
share the journey with all its
challenges and triumphs.
I wish you a happy holiday
season in which ever way you
celebrate it. May you enjoy time
with your family and reflect on
all the good things in life.

Canberra 2018 On the 9th of November, the Year 6 and 7 students departed Crafers Primary School at 8pm to start the
sixteen-hour long bus ride to Canberra. The next morning, we stopped at the Dog on the Tucker Box
for breakfast. Later that day, the Crafers Crew arrived at Canberra Park where we would stay for the
week. All the students were so relieved to finally eat lunch because they were so hungry from being on
the bus for sixteen hours.
On the 11th of November, the Crafers Crew were up early, ready to attend the Australian War memorial
for the Remembrance Day ceremony. It was a great experience to see some of the VIPs, such as Scott
Morrison, the Australian PM. The Crafers Crew had a quick lunch break and then headed off to the
Royal Australian Mint. Telstra Tower was next on the agenda. It was a fantastic view from the lookout.

After another early rise on Monday, the sleepy Crafers
Crew piled onto the bus and were off to visit the
Museum of Australian Democracy at Old Parliament
House. The crew ate lunch, visited the rose garden and
then headed to Parliament House. The Crafers Crew
watched the Senate in action and met Senator Penny
Wong and we had the chance to ask her some hard-
hitting questions. After dinner we went indoor rock
climbing.
One of the highlights on Tuesday was another visit
to the Australian War Memorial. The Crafers
Primary School Crew got to visit a Discovery Zone
where real-life war situations got put into action in
special rooms that made it like you were at war.
When night fell, we were off to Cockington Green,
where famous international buildings were shrunk
down to decorate an amazingly manicured
garden.

The next day, the Crafers Crew went to the National Museum, CSIRO, National Capital Exhibition and
then our favourite activity - The Big Splash Waterpark.
It was bitter sweet on our final day in Canberra as we had enjoyed our time so much there but we had
also missed home and our families. We went to the AIS for a day tour and then Questacon, which was
amazing. We then had lunch and departed Canberra at 4pm.
On Friday the Crafers crew, exhausted and homesick, arrived at Crafers Primary School at approx.
7am.
What an amazing experience that we will never forget!
Katelin, Year 7
Students participated in a variety of educational programs with a focus on Australia’s history, culture, heritage and democracy. The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist families in meeting the cost of the excursion the Australian Government is contributing funding of $60 per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program towards those costs. The rebate is paid directly to the school upon completion of the excursion.

House Captain Volleyball Competition
An ongoing tradition at Crafers Primary School is for our House
Captains to run a competitive knockout volleyball competition in
Term 4. They hold two competitions, one for the Year 4/5’s and
another for the Year 6/7’s. The competition was a great success
with 21 teams entering the competition. The competition drew in
large crowds that all enjoyed sitting on the sideline barracking
their favourite teams.
Congratulations to The Scorpions for taking out the Year 4/5
competition and Jeffery’s Hotdogs for taking out the Year 6/7
competition.
I would like to say a massive thank you to all the House Captains
for their hard work in organising such a successful competition.
They have put in a lot of their own time into organising and
running the event and I know the other students are extremely
grateful for their efforts.

Farewell Joan Joan is retiring!
After 18 years of service to the school Joan Ng has decided that retirement is the life to pursue. Joan
has worked with many children over the years and has been pivotal in their learning development.
Her ability to understand the learning needs of students, work with teachers and implement a
programme has been exemplary. Joan is the quiet achiever, always willing to help and always there
when needed. It is with a sense of sadness and delight that we wish Joan all the best for the future and
thank her deeply for the service she has given Crafers Primary School.
