Term 3 2019

Now we’ve hit our stride! It’s so good to see you all getting out and about and embracing the opportunities of our Love It program. In Term 3, there is once again plenty of fun activities specially designed to keep you cosy and engaged in the cooler weather and to get you out and about as Spring starts to break through. This term we introduce our weekly ‘Boarders Get Baking’ program. Deliberately designed by our very own ‘Domestic Goddess’ Mrs Wiedemann to blend our Live it and Love it programs and have you turning out delicious baked goods each Friday afternoon. We’ve even built in a visit to the Mecca of baking, Maggio’s at Cammeray for a behind the scenes tour of this lower North Shore institution. Our Live It, Love It, Learn It programs are all about learning new skills and sharing them with others. On our Community Day you will have the opportunity to work with Narromine artist, Susie Rae, to produce artworks for display in our Houses. We will also have a focus on the Garden Party and in particular, our Boarders’ stall, with many opportunities to bake and create goods to share with others. Amongst an exciting range of activities there are some very special occasions – our Year 12 Charity Event, the Pymble Uniting Church visit, Boarders’ Week, Garden Party and of course, our farewell to our Year 12 boarder ‘sisters’. So much to look forward to!

If you haven’t already, try this new twist on the ancient practice of yoga. Yoga is practiced in the gentle warmth of approximately 32 degrees. Week Five – Boarders’ Week!!! This will be an action-packed celebration of all things Boarding – read up on the adventure in the special Boarders’ Week Booklet. Community Weekend: Friday 23 August to Sunday 25 August Community Days are special times in our Boarding calendar where all Boarders are required to be in attendance. This weekend is an extra special one as it marks the start of Boarders’ Week! In Term 3, all Boarders are required to be in their House on Friday 23 August between 3.30pm and 4.30pm for the most important business of the term, our lockdown and evacuation drill. As much as we love you, we don’t need you back until Sunday morning at 8.30am when we will celebrate the sacred with the congregation from Pymble Uniting Church (PUC). The PUC services are a much-loved tradition in our Boarding community, and it is always good to welcome Reverend Ainsley and the many familiar faces from our local Church. This will be followed by an afternoon of art with visiting artist, Susie Rae working with us to produce beautiful artworks for display in the Houses. Of course, some of you may choose to stay with us for the entire weekend as we have lots of fun activities planned as follows: Friday 23 August: By popular demand - Boarders’ Social Years 7 to 9 It feels as though you have been asking for ever! So it’s happening! Join us and some of our Boarding neighbours for a night of fun, dancing and celebration of all things Boarding. And don’t worry, Years 10 and 11 will have their own special dance in Term 4. Saturday 24 August and Sunday 25 August: Susie Rae Susie is famous throughout the Central West and beyond for her beautiful artworks and inspiring art classes. Enjoy Sunday afternoon as we work as a community to produce masterpieces to celebrate our community and beautify our hallways. If you are really keen, Susie will also be available to work with you on Saturday afternoon. Week Six Friday 30 August: Year 12 Charity Event This Boarding community event was initiated by our Year 12 cohort 4 years ago and aims to raise money for those suffering hardship in rural and remote communities. This year the event takes on a new twist with an extra big audience thanks to Dr Hadwen and the opportunity to raise funds for the Country Women’s Association (CWA) of NSW Disaster Relief Fund. Year 12 will be in attendance and Year 11 will assist with food service. Please encourage your families to attend.

Sunday 8 September: David Jones Spring Flower Show and City Westfield Adventure Okay, I know it’s probably at the top of your list but if you haven’t been it is worth the trip to the city to enjoy this floral spectacular. The Elizabeth Street store is undergoing a huge renovation so the exhibition will be transferred to the Market Street store which, admittedly, isn’t quite as spectacular but still highly recommended. Prefect Supper Club – Lang House The Prefect Supper Club is a great opportunity for our youngest and oldest Boarders to get together for an evening of relaxed conversation, friendly advice and, of course, a delicious supper. Dates coming your way soon! View from my Window and Speaker Series ‘View from my window’ continues to be a highlight in our Chapel service. During this special time, individual Boarders take the opportunity to share stories and images from their homes. The presentations are captivating and heart-warming, helping us all appreciate the variety of backgrounds from which we come and the experiences that we bring to Boarding. This term, we are looking forward to hearing all about life in Young, New York and Gunnedah. Hopefully some of our Boarders’ relatives might also share their stories and enrich our understanding of the diverse community in which we live. And over to you… Build your own adventure Get together with a group of friends and put together a proposal for your adventure. Whether it is a night out at a favourite restaurant, a trip to a local market or an inner-city expedition. Get your ideas down on paper, suggest a date and we will do the best we can to make it happen. Organise a sleepover We would love you to invite a friend from the Day School to stay over on a Friday or Saturday night. Propose some dates to your House Supervisor and make it happen! Or better still… Invite up to 5 of your friends from the Day School for a pizza and movie night. Once again, propose some dates to your House Supervisor and make it happen!
