Rabbi’s Message If memory serves me, it was the prophet Mohammed who called Jews “the people of the book.” He was, of course, speaking of the TaNaKh, the Hebrew Bible. This summer, take the Bible off your bookshelf and turn to Devarim (words), also known as Deuteronomy. Depending upon which edition of the Jewish Bible you read, Devarim is roughly 160
pages. Savor every word. Read it more than once. You will be deeply moved. Briefly put, Moses has brought our ancestors to the borders of the Holy Land. He then recounts in three Discourses the events of the forty years’ wan-derings; and warns against the temptations awaiting them in Canaan, with promise of Divine judgment for disobedience, and Divine blessing for faithful observance, of God’s commandments. Deuteronomy is an oratory; it is Moses speaking to his beloved people as he prepares to die. Have you ever thought “what would I say at such a moment?” If we are blessed with the chance to “charge” our children before our deaths, we would do well to learn these devarim: God is One; people do best when they devote themselves to God; God is Righteousness and Faithfulness, Mercy and Love. The Shema, found in Deuteronomy 6:4, teaches the unity of the Creator, the unity of creation, and the unity of humankind. The God of Devarim is not merely a Judge or Ruler, but a Friend and Parent. “And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, with all thy soul, and with all thy might. (6:5) This whole-souled love and devotion to God is to be accom-panied by a loving benevolence towards all people; and especially to family members. Devarim is divided thusly: (1) 1:6-4:40 First Discourse: a review of Israel’s journeying, with an ap-peal not to forget the Torah revealed at Horeb (aka, Sinai). (2) 4:44-26:19 Second Discourse: on the religious foundations of the Covenant, together with a Code of Law, dealing with worship (12:1-16:17), government (16:18-18:22), criminal law (19:1-21:9), domestic life (21:10-25:19), and rituals of the Sanctuary (26:1-19). (3) Chapters 27-30 Third Discourse: the enforcement of the Law, and the establishment afresh of the Covenant between Israel and God. (4) Chapters 31-34 The Last Days of Moses: the charge to Joshua, the de-livery of the Law to the Priests, the Song, the Blessing, and the death of Moses. Let these devarim challenge and refresh us. Have a refreshing, enjoyable and healthy summer.

Good-bye to Dear Friends
It was a tearful moment during the Shabbat Service at Lakeside Yacht Club when Temple Israel Ner Tamid said farewell to Dick and Ann Schamberger, who are moving to Colorado. Ann had been a member of the adult education class for several years. And her husband Dick, a skilled craftsman, has left us a beautiful legacy: his handmade lectern that now sits on the bima. Dick also promised to make a companion piece in the next few years. Rabbi Matt presented the Schambergers with a plaque with an article from the Cleveland Jewish News describing this generous gift.

Excepts from Speeches from the 2010 Confirmation Class
Samantha Basch: To all of the religious school teachers who have put up with our class and who have taught us about everything from Hebrew to holidays to relationships, we say todah rabbah. Thank you Mrs. Weinberg for making sure that religious school run smoothly. Rachel, thank you for sharing your beautiful voice at services. Rabbi Fred, thank you for sharing your guidance and immense knowledge. Moms, dads, brothers, sisters, uncles, aunts, cousins, grandmas, grandpas, and friends, thank you for all of the support you have given. I would personally like to thank all of the members of the confirmation class for continuing to come to religious school, and for being such good friends. Todah rabbah, Rabbi Matt, not only for being the funniest rabbi we know, but also for maintaining such a close relationship with us. We know that whatever comes up in our discussions, you will be willing to talk about it.
Teddy Eisenberg: Confirmation is a ceremony constituting an individual and group affirmation of commitment to the Jewish people. Associated with Reform Judaism, the first confirmation was held in 1810 in Seesen, Germany, exactly 200 years ago. This evening, we read the Ten Commandments from our Holocaust Precious Legacy Scroll. By reading the Ten Commandments, we receive the Torah just like our ancestors did at Mount Sinai on Shavuot. We also read from the book of Ruth because she is an exceptional example of a sincere convert to Judaism. As confirmands, and as Jews, we would do well to follow her example.
Jeff Robbins: I came to Temple Israel Ner Tamid when I was in first grade. That year, we met the class we would spend the next 10 years with. As peers , we have become close companions. Honestly, these are some of the people that I trust the most. It’s interesting to think that, we are still learning more about one another all the time. These are great people, and I’m honored to call them friends. We will miss those Sunday mornings when we all congregate here at temple, eating our bagels, and just enjoying the time we spend together.

Take the top off a water bottle. Squirt a generous amount of paint inside in all three colors. Replace lid. Shake vigorously to coat the in-side of the bottle. Do not mix too much. You'll want interesting pat-terns of color, rather than an even mix. Let dry. Cut out a tail shape making a 1/2" tab to fold and glue to back of fish. Cut out a fin making a 1/2" tab to fold and glue to the top of the fish.
To make the stand, cut off the bot-tom of a cup keeping only the top 1-1/2". Cut the edge to resemble waves. Set the fish on the cup.
