Project Summary
Researched, designed, built and tested an absorption refrigeration coolant system as a proof of concept to replace the current viscous clutch and axial fan system manufactured by Horton, Inc.
Design Goal
Horton Inc. requested an innovative coolant solution to reduce thermal losses and power consumption compared to their current engine coolant system on a Volvo VTNA DT13.
Design Constraints
1. Volvo VTNA MD13 fluid paths must remain unaltered:
a. Anti-‐freeze to/from Radiator b. Exhaust gases to/from
Charge Air Cooler 2. Maximum ambient air temperature
of 43°C 3. Dimensional constraints:
3.75” x 32” x 48” Fore Radiator 10.25" x 32” x 48” Aft Radiator
4. Vehicle velocity of 35 MPH
