• Collectarangeofphotosofwater(forexample:couldcutoutorphotocopyimagesfromGet Connected: Water in the world).
• Collectalargepieceofpaper,andarangeofpens.
Activity:
Organisestudentsintoacircle.GiveeachstudentaStudentHandout.
(a) Havealargepieceofpaperandpensinthecentre.Askstudentstositinsilence,andpassaroundwaterphotosforthemto lookat.Afterstudentshavehadsometimetolookatafewphotos,askthemtocometothecentreandwriteonthepaper theirresponsetothestatement“Waterisimportanttomebecause...”Displaythepapersotheclasscanseeeach other’sresponses.
(b) Randomlydistributearolecardtoeachstudent.Askstudentstocompletethe“Response”sectionoftheStudentHandout, writinga“Tweet”aboutwaterfromtheperspectiveidentifiedintheirrolecard.Askstudentstocut/tearoffthe“Response” sectionoftheirhandout.Theyshouldscrewtheir“Tweet”intoasnowball.Ontheword“go”,studentsshouldtosstheir snowballsintothecentreofthecircle,andpickupsomeoneelse’s.Studentsshouldsharethesenewperspectivesonwater withtheclassbyreadingoutthe“Tweet”theypickedup.
(c) Askstudentstodiscussthedifferentviewstheyhaveheard.Encouragestudentstoshareanewpersonalperspectivewith theclassbysaying“Iusedtothink.....butnowIthink.....”

Youareyourself–livinginAustralia.Youhavewaterwheneveryouwantit.Yougroanwhenyourparentsremindyoutowashyourhandsaftergoingtothetoiletandbeforeeating.Youhavebeenlearningatschoolabouthowkidselsewhereintheworldgetsickandsometimesdiewhentheydrinkpollutedwater.Youknowthatdiseasespreadsquicklywhenpeoplecan’twashtheirhandswithsoapandwaterorusewatertoflushatoilet.
YouareafarmerinIndonesia.Youneedwatertohelpcropsgrowandforyourfarmanimalstodrink.Whenwaterisavailable,yourcropsandanimalsgrowwellandyoucanfeedyourfamily.Sometimesyoucangrowmorethanyouneed–thenyoucantakeextravegetablestothemarket.Extramoneycanbeusedtobuyclothes,schoolsuppliesandvisitthedoctorifneeded.
YouareafarmerinAustralia.Yourelyonwaterbeingpumpedfromabigdamtoyourfarm.Youhavetopaythegovernmenttodothisbutitisworthitifyourcropsgrowbetterandyieldmoretoselltothebigsupermarketthatbuysyourvegetables.Whenwaterisscarceorcoststoomuchtobuy,youmakelessmoney.Thismakesithardforyourwholefamily.
YouworkforUNESCO,theUnitedNationsEducational,ScientificandCulturalOrganisation,inthe“WaterforPeace”department.Yourjobistohelpdifferentcountriestoworktogethertosharewater.Sometimestheyfightoverwhoownsthewaterinariverorlake.Byhelpingcountriestoshare,youaidthemincooperatingoverotherthingsaswell–suchashelpingthemtopartnertogethertogetbetterschools,hospitalsandroadsfortheirpeople.Youbelievethatwithfreshwater,millionsofpeopleallovertheworldcanlivebetter,healthierlives.Youknowthatcooperationoverwatercanhelptoachievepeaceinmanypartsoftheworld.
