T he mission was to change the bands on two cars,
but that effort became easier when it was found that only one car n e e d e d n e w bands. The s e c o n d o n l y required some tightening and an adjustment of the
neutral range.
The second effort took a record breaking 6-hours. One of the cardinal rules of Model Ting is when working on the bands, stuff so many rags in the place that even a staple would have a hard time falling into the sump. Enough to stop even a small screwdriver being used to loosen the band ears. Because if you don’t, and the screwdriver falls, it will find exactly the fastest route to the sump.
We didn’t and it did.
After trying all the time honored methods and failing to retrieve it, it was time to pull the hog’s head and that ultimately worked. By this time the Tarheel Ts were in serious
overtime. However, the effort also found various other items in the sump which should not be in a transmission, thus saving the car from s e r i o u s f u t u r e disaster. Someone earlier had just taken a pass on working to
get them out.
Attendees were shown t h e b a n d - r i v e t
machine owned by Don E l l i s w h i ch ma kes clamping the new fabric a breeze. Don also displayed the award the club received from the MTFCA for our newsletter
(see Pg. 3).
Members of the Draper VFD were on hand and are asking club members to improve their truck. In late March we will be replacing the front spokes and t i res, replacing the wiring, and adding some small additional items to complete the truck’s renovation. We will let members know when the session is set. It will be held at Phil Brooks’
building in Reidsville.
And thanks again to Phil and Ginny for being perfect hosts to our
tech session.
THE TARHEEL Ts is
chartered as a chapter in both major MODEL T clubs.

I n 1926 Henry decided to put his busi-ness philosophy in writing and his
book, Today and Tomorrow was pub-lished. It was a success in the U.S. and Europe as he explained his belief that certain truisms must be followed for success. Among them is the con-cept of no waste and of having parts available for assembly precisely when needed. Henry also spoke of the need to care for the customer. Henry also noted the conflict between
quality and quantity.
After WWII a Japanese businessman named Taiichi Ohno came
to America on behalf of a new automobile company named Toyota. He was estab-lishing the firm’s production methods and
took back to Japan as many cop-ies of Henry’s book as he could locate. All Toyota managers were required to read it and it still is in the offices of many of them. The word Kanban described the proc-ess in Japanese and it is written as in our headline. (Fortunately there was no one around to check the effectiveness of Henry’s brakes).
Given Toyota’s recent problems one can imagine that the new edition, available on Amazon, will again become required reading at Toyota which seems to have
lost some of Henry’s

W e mourned the loss of Tim Sims in De-
cember but are pleased to learn that his sons have decided to keep his iconic Gray Tourer and keep it running. President Don Ellis re-ceived the news this month and volunteered that the club will do every-thing possible to help them. He invited them to attend the club’s tech sessions to learned how these cars operate.
The first need is to train one or more of the young Sims how to drive the T. We will find an open lot somewhere and begin to show them some of the fun their dad had in the car he so loved. -0-
W e note with sorrow the passing of Jesse Chilton, father of
m e m b e r Gayle Apple following a long illness. He passed away on Feb. 12th at the H o s p i c e
Home. The 10th of 23 children, 92 year old Jesse led a very active life enjoying outdoor sports and hobbies and serving his church throughout his life. The Apples have our sympathy.

T he Model T w o r l d held it’s own
kind of Olympics in February, the an-nual member’s meeting in Phoe-n i x , A r i z o na . Among the events at the session is the selection of the top club n e w s l e t t e r s . The competi-tion is tough since clubs from through-ou t t he Model T World have their news-l e t t e r s viewed by MTFCA of-
ficials.
This year, our newsletter received “the bronze”, and a plaque repre-senting that honor was presented
to President Don Ellis.
Our club thanks the MTFCA for the honor and rec-
ognition.

site.
Don Ellis called for the newsletter when we began saying “it should be the glue” which holds members to-

events.
T he work of Dr.
Anthony Atala has
received more televised
praise. Dr. Atala was
interviewed by “60-
Minutes” earlier this year
concerning his important
and unique medical
efforts.
His unit, at Wake Forest
Medical Center is
succeeding in finding
ways to grow human
organs for use by those
who are suffering from
disease or terrible
accidents. The story
noted that the ability of
the unit to grow kidneys is
making it easier for those
who suffer from disease
in that organ to receive
aid instead of waiting for
a donor.
The successes of his team
thus far has made Dr.
Atala a world leader is this

KEEPING THE ENGINES RUNNING...
A Model T club in Connecticut
posted a note on the MTFCA forum asking for some help. Turns out they are helping a l o c a l f i r e department put a Model TT fire engine back in service but are not sure about the equipment needed to outfit it. They were looking for a similar truck which would give them an idea of what should go where as the back of their truck is currently empty. A number of MTFCA
offered them pictures, but it turned out that the Draper VFD truck which we renovated is the closest to their TT. They asked for some detailed pictures and information regarding the gear outfitting the Draper truck. We had
sent them our pictures but they needed close ups of what is in the back and how it is
attached to the vehicle.
The Draper firemen were contacted and they agreed to give all the help the could in getting
yet another Ford Fire Fighter truck up
and running with proper gear on board.

HOW ABOUTHOW ABOUT
THAT !THAT !
Volume VIII Issue III
O K, so this doesn’t involve Model Ts. And worse, does involve a car
called “Chevrolet”. But that isn’t the real
story.
This collection is owned by Dennis Al-baugh from Iowa. And it isn’t just a collec-tion of “bow-ties”. You see, Dennis owns every Chevy convert ible f rom 1912 to 1975.That is more than 110
cars.
Now, a couple of trivia questions. His
collection is missing a 1939 convertible.
Why?
And his collection ends in 1975. Why?
Yes, Dennis is a billionaire having made
a fortune in the farm chemical industry.
He founded his company and retains
100% ownership today.
He also built an 18-hole golf course modeled after the famous (and expensive) Augusta Na-
tional Course !
So, why didn’t he com-plete his collection by grabbing up a nice 1938 Chevy converti-ble? Ah Ha. Chevy did
not make a convertible in 1939.
And why didn’t he continue buying Chevy convertibles after 1975? Ah Ha. Chev-rolet stopped marketing a convertible after that year probably to the relief of
Mrs. Dennis. Thanks to Phil Brooks for this story

T here is a fellow on the MTFCA forum who appar-ently has found a cache of great aftermarket items de-signed for the Model T.
This folks, was a “mechanical fan belt” which had steel links and leather inserts. The idea was to punch out the leather inserts and links until you had the size right, then link the ends together with a connector and away to you with want must have been a very noisy fan belt.
This is one of those ideas where you wondered why??
A strip of relatively inexpen-sive leather, or a mechanical mechanism ?
Needless to say, Smith & Jones is not stocking repros.

A job which taxes your pa-tience is getting the rod bearings properly set up--not too tight and not too loose. A com-mon tool is PastiGage. But back then this was the way it was
done.
“Pull the cap and cut a piece of newspaper to fit inside the cap between the cap and crank journal. Torque the cap and see if the engine can
be rotated. If you can turn it over with the paper between the cap and crank you need to pull a shim. If it locks up with the paper but turns freely with it removed the clearance is perfect. This makes bearing adjustment a snap! You can verify it with Plasi-Gage if you wish, but after you've done it once you'll see no need
to buy PlastiGage again.”
