Why Al-Jabal Al-Akhdhar?
Oman provides proximal analogues for other MENA countries in innovative exploration plays,
developing methods and production profiles of sub Infra-Cambrian Precambrian reservoirs,
Paleozoic reservoirs (Cambro-Ordovician sandstones and Permian Khuff carbonates), Mesozoic
reservoirs (Mishrif and Shuaiba Reservoirs) and Cenozoic reservoirs yet to be explored in other
MENA countries.
This fieldtrip target area is Wadi Al Muaydin (Figure 1) which cuts through the southern flank of
the autochtonous series of Al Jabal Al Akhdhar anticline (Figure 2).

Since the early days of hydrocarbon exploration in Oman, Wadi Al Muaydin was used as an
easily-accessed window to study the North Oman subsurface formation, including the prolific
Natih and Shuaiba carbonate reservoirs.
The Mesozoic formations from the Triassic Mahil (Jilh-Sudair) Upper Khuff ?equivalent in the
subsurface nomenclature) to the Upper Cretaceous Muti (Fiqa equivalent) are easily accessible
along the wadi floor (Figure 3). The terrain at the lower end of the wadi in the area of Birkat Al
Mawz is occupied by over-thrusted Mesozoic sediments of the Hawasina Nappes.

The Instructors*
Dr. Said Al Balushi is Lead Production/Field
Development Geologist of the Lekhwair Upper Shuaiba
Project of Petroleum Development Oman. Dr. Al Balushi
received his PhD in Basin Analysis and Petroleum
Geoscience from the University of Manchester (UK) in
2010. His PhD research contributed to understanding the
fundamental factors controlling lithofacies variability and
organic-matter enrichment in the fine-grained sediments
Natih-B Member of the carbonate-dominated Upper
Cretaceous Natih Formation in Northern Oman. Dr. Said
has MSc in Earth Sciences from Sultan Qaboos University (with a research project focused on
the “Infra-Cambrian” carbonates of the Qarn Alam and Qarat Kibrit Salt Domes in Central
Oman) in 2005, and he completed his BSc study in Resource and Applied Geology at the
University of Birmingham (UK) in 2002.
Dr Said joined PDO soon after completing his PhD studies worked as Production Geologist (2010
- 2012) in PDO’s Study Centre (Reservoir Solutions and Consultancy Team), then as Exploration
Geologist (2012 - 2014) in the Conventional Oil Exploration of several plays in Oman’s PDO
concessions.
In addition to his primary duties as field development, planning and operations geologist, Dr
Said has several areas of particular interest including: field geology of Oman, carbonate
petroleum systems, sedimentology and diagenesis of carbonate reservoir rocks, organic
matters facies and richness in carbonates and calcareous sediments, sequence stratigraphy,
reservoir characterisation and modelling of both matrix and fractured carbonate reservoirs,
Dr. Al Balushi participated in several international conferences and authored/co-authored
several peer-reviewed papers.

Dr. Salah Hafidh Hashim Al-Dhahab
Dr. Salah is the appointed Senior Geological Advisor and Chief
Geologist of Daleel Petroleum of Oman. He earned his PhD on
Fractured Reservoirs of Oman from Heriot Watt University and
his BSc (Honors) in Petroleum Geology from the Imperial College,
UK. Dr. Salah has over 20 years’ experience in international oil
and gas industry. He joined PDO as operation and development
geologist in charge of well proposals to FDP, then moved to E&P research and worked on
deployment of new technologies as chief geologist, petroleum manager and upstream technical
advisor. His CV includes:
Work for PDO, Shell EPT, Knowledge Reservoir petroleum consulting company, Oman Oil
(upstream investment company), OOCEP (as Senior New-ventures consultant geologist).
Hands-on work experience on several types of field developments including primary pure
depletion, to secondary water flooding to Tertiary thermal GOGD & thermal flooding.
Analyzed data at several scale from well scale to field scale to regional scale.
Work on many oil and gas fields, including but not limited to the following: Most of PDO
north & central Oman fields, West Bukha offshore Oman, Rima field, Block 60 deep tight gas
reservoir, Block 42 exploration and Block 5 (Daleel Field). Internationally, on UAE (Bab field),
Qatar (North Dome), Iraq (Kirkuk field) and Caspian (Kashagan).
Review of several assets including: Oman blocks (3, 4, 15, 17, 30, 36, 38, 51, 54, 55, 56, 61,
63, 64 and 65), as well as blocks in Yemen, Egypt, Albania, Iraq, Syria, East Africa and
Turkmenistan while working as technical advisor within OOC/OOCEP’s new venture’s
acquisition team.
Dr. Salah represented OOC/OOCEP (as investors) in exploration of offshore Oman Sea (block
18/41), Kareem Small Field and Rima satellite fields (Oman PDO service contract), Oman Block
53 Mukhazina steam flood project, Block 62, Kazakhstan Dunga and Pearls assets. Last but not
least Salah is blessed with good interpersonal and managerial skills; managed several projects
(resources: budget and manpower) over the years, and has an established track record of
