Monitoring tanks
Periodic samples from inside tank bottom
Sample from low end of tank
Wait at least two hours after fuel delivery
If sample looks hazy or waxy, water likely present
Use field detection kit to check for microbes and fuel specifications
Check Your Fuel
Reddish, scaly, gritty deposits: corrosion and/or silt in tank
Black or brown deposits: water contamination has degraded the fuel
Sludge build-up in tank bottom can be caused by the breakdown of the fuel itself.
Check Your Fuel
Contaminants like salts in water may:◦Degrade fuel chemical structure, yielding substances detrimental to system components
◦Cause fuel additives to leave fuel and enter water
How to remove water and contaminants from storage tanksMultipoint water pumping◦ Suction tube to bottom of tank
◦ All other available access points
◦ If suction is at lower end of tank, remove pump to facilitate water removal
Dispose of tank bottom water properly
How to remove water and contaminants from storage tanksFuel filtration/polishing◦ Remove water and contaminants without removing fuel
from tank
Non-entry tank cleaning◦ Usually requires emptying tank
◦ Pressure washing equipment lowered into tank
Physical entry tank cleaning◦ Used in cases of extreme contamination
◦ Contaminants physically scrubbed from tank walls
