Since 1981, when she moved to San Diego from Portland to head up UC San Diego’s Stuart Collection, Mary Beebe has reshaped the 1200-acre campus into a veritable garden of public art. Commissioning pieces large and small—from Michael Asher’s easily-overlooked water fountain to Do Ho Suh’s Fallen Star, a house perched on the rooftop of Jacobs Hall—Mary and the Stuart Collection have reshaped our views of public art and made extraordinary works of art available to everyone for the small price of a leisurely stroll around campus. Mary sought out the most luminous names of the art world, from Robert Irwin to William Wegman to Nam June Paik and others to create a world-class permanent open air collection. Of particular interest to the La Jolla Symphony & Chorus is a work by composer John Luther Adams, Sound Garden, a sound installation that reacts in real time to climate, tidal, and light conditions. Mary Beebe has created a gem on our campus, and we are pleased to honor her with the 2019 Arts Angel award.

The Arts Angel award is given annually by La Jolla Symphony & Chorus to an artist(s) or advocate for the arts, who has made a noteworthy contribution to the artistic life of our community.
