PEACE LUTHERAN SCHOOLEstablished 1970

“SHARING THE PEACE OF CHRIST”

Dear Parents,

Peace Lutheran School has the great blessing of being part of a rich history of schools established for a very basic purpose: to train children in the Word of God. For generations, schools just like Peace have shared the wonderful news of what God has done for his people here on earth. For more than half a century, Peace Lutheran School itself has also been carrying out that task.

We are excited that you are able to be with us as the Lord guides us on. He surely has wonderful things in store for us! Let us all ask our heavenly father to be with us this coming school year and all the years to come, as we continue to share the Peace of Christ!

This school is a full-time educational institution, affording to every child that which cannot be found in any public establishment of its kind--A BALANCED PROGRAM for the SOUL, the BODY, and the MIND of the child.

We believe that an education without Christ is an education without foundation and purpose. We believe that all education, and this includes history, science, mathematics, English, and all other subjects, must be taught in harmony with God's inspired and errorless Word. Our goals then are a solid basic education in all branches of secular learning and a solid spiritual and moral training based upon the unmovable foundation of the Holy Scriptures.

Part of educating the whole child (soul, mind and body) is realizing that each child is unique. God blesses each of us with different talents and abilities. At Peace Lutheran, the faculty recognizes this truth and educates the children with this in mind. Each child’s unique spiritual, academic, physical, and emotional needs are recognized and met to the best of the staff’s ability.

The staff and BOE at Peace Lutheran recognizes that some children have special needs beyond those of other children. Since we recognize that each child is different we will determine on an individual basis if the staff is equipped to best meet these special needs.

In addition to the staff nurturing each student as a unique child of God, the children are led to recognize their own special place in God’s kingdom. Each child is encouraged to realize that he/she has been given gifts and talents in accordance with God’s gracious purpose for his/her life. Rather than comparing themselves with their peers, the students are guided to God’s Word for the measuring line in their life. In the Bible, the children receive guidance regarding how to use their talents and abilities to honor God.

The staff at Peace Lutheran looks forward to the opportunity to work with you and your child.

Mr. David Zuberbier, Principal

FOREWORDAs parents/legal guardians and Christian teachers, our concern is the upbringing of children who have come to know and to love their Savior, Jesus Christ. It is to Him alone that we give praise and glory as we work together in the training of the children He has given to us. AFFILIATIONPeace Lutheran School is owned and operated by Peace Lutheran Church of Bradenton, Florida. Peace Lutheran Church is a member of the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod (WELS). Its supervision is directly under the Board for Parish Education of the congregation.

There are more than 730 WELS schools serving over 35,000 children in all parts of the United States as well as the world, which are staffed by more than 2,400 called teachers. The teachers in these schools, as well as in our school, have received their education degree from accredited Lutheran colleges. Specialized instructors may be used in certain areas, such as religion (namely, the congregational pastor), music, and art. The WELS operates one of the largest private school systems in the United States.

RECOGNITIONPeace Lutheran School is recognized by the State of Florida as a viable private Christian school. All faculty members have earned, at a minimum, a Bachelor of Science in Education degree and are certified at Martin Luther College in New Ulm, Minnesota, which is accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.

ADMINISTRATIONPeace Lutheran School is at all times under the control and supervision of the voters’ assembly of Peace Lutheran Church. The Board for Parish Education (BPE) is elected by the congregation to handle the administration of the school. The pastor and principal serve as ex-officio members on the BPE. The various members of the board work in close cooperation to determine and adopt policies that affect the operation of Peace Lutheran School. All policies are subject to congregational approval. The BPE has the duty of seeing to it that our school does justice to its task of offering its children a thorough Christian instruction in all subject areas. The principal’s primary function is to implement and follow through on all school policies.

PURPOSE OF OUR SCHOOLAs concerned Christians, we pray that their faith and love for their Savior will enable them to face the many challenges and overcome the many temptations that will confront them in future years.

We take great comfort in the Lord's command and the promise that says, “Train a child in the way he should go and even when he is old he will not turn from it.” (Proverbs 22:6). We encourage non-member parents to become members in good standing at Peace Lutheran and to take an active role in our school program.

GOALS OF CHRISTIAN EDUCATIONIn offering our children a sound Christian education, we are providing them with answers to life's most profound questions:

Where did we come from? Why are we here?Where are we going?

Revised April 2016 Page 6

Page 7: TABLE OF CONTENT - Peace Lutheran Web viewSchool Handbook. Containing the Policies, Procedures, and Regulations of: Peace Lutheran School . 1611 30th Ave W. ... to train children in

Our primary goal is to equip every student with the ability to correctly answer these questions. The answers to these questions (found in the Bible) are the key to each student's successful existence in society as a Christian and also to the life hereafter. Here, then, is the essence of the children's Christian training:

1. We teach that God is the Creator and Preserver of the universe and all people.2. We want our pupils to know and believe in Jesus, their Savior. Through the teachings of the Law, and

the Gospel message.3. We guide pupils in Christian living out of love for their Savior.4. We also encourage stewardship of time and talents and strive to instill in each child a love for work in

God's kingdom.5. We teach all subjects in the light of God's Word.6. We teach children that all people are unique and special members of God's creation. Thus, our

children are taught to respect the rights of others – at home, in the classroom, on the playground, or wherever they might be – at all times demonstrating concern for the spiritual and physical well-being of others.

7. We seek to give guidance to all parents by helping to train the children in the virtues of Christian obedience and character. To that end, we furthermore encourage parents to develop an active church life and Christ-centered home life.

HOME AND SCHOOL COOPERATIONThe Lord's encouragement is clear: “These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. ”(Deuteronomy 6:6.7) Parents and teachers seek to join hands so that this work can be done efficiently and effectively. Let us all dedicate ourselves anew to this important work of preparing our children for their eternal future. When school-related concerns or questions arise, parents are instructed to go directly to the teacher involved. If a problem arises that cannot be resolved with the teacher, the next person to contact would be the principal, then the pastor, and as a last resort the Board for Parish Education. By following these orderly steps, we are heeding Jesus' guidelines and seeking his blessing as recorded for us in Matthew 18:15-17. Working together, we can seek to resolve all problems in a God-pleasing way.

Please bring any comments, questions, or complaints to the attention of the teacher involved and the principal after school hours. The faculty will listen and deal with the situation accordingly.

TUITION AND FINANCINGAll textbooks provided are the property of the school. All workbooks used in the classroom belong to the individual student and are covered in school tuition. Each student will purchase required religion books on Registration Night.

Whether paying in full or paying monthly, the first payment must be made on or before the first day of school or the child/children may not be allowed to attend classes. If an account becomes 60 (sixty) days past due, the child’s/children’s enrollment may be discontinued.

Members of Peace who are unable to pledge the full amount for their child’s/children’s Christian education may apply for Tuition Assistance from Peace congregation.

The Board for Parish Education has approved and updated tuition and payment plans for the current school year but has the right to change or amend tuition with proper notice (30 days). The fee schedule is available from the Principal. Please pick one of the options below when deciding how to finance your child’s education.

TUITION PAYMENT OPTIONS : 1. Payment in full prior to start of school.2. Initial payment up front, remainder paid in 10 equal monthly payments.3. Entire tuition amount paid in 10 equal monthly payments

Payment arrangements MUST BE MADE PRIOR TO STUDENT ATTENDING SCHOOL. Payments should begin no later than August.

If you become financially unable to meet tuition costs, you are encouraged to file a confidential financial disclosure form with an accompanying letter of explanation to the Principal and Board for Parish Education. The letter may be given to either the principal or the Board for Parish Education chairman. The Board will discuss your request in a private and confidential manner at its next regularly scheduled meeting and present you with a proposal. A mutual decision will then be reached between the parties on how to handle tuition payments from that point on. We strongly encourage parents/legal guardians to speak with the principal or Board for Parish Education chairman if a legitimate financial problem makes it difficult to keep your child/children enrolled at Peace Lutheran.

Please note: There will be no registration refunds for absentees or early withdrawals. A pro-rated tuition agreement will be negotiated with those who must move away.

TUITION POLICYMember Tuition Policy: Members of the Peace Lutheran Church in Bradenton, FL may be provided with a tuition credit. In order to qualify for this reduced rate, the member student(s) and at least one parent or guardian must attend at least 50% of all regular weekly worship services at Peace Lutheran Church each semester. Should a member family fail to meet this guideline, their member tuition credit status may be revoked and they will be billed at non-member rates for the following semester.

Non-member Tuition Policy: All non-member students are charged a tuition fee. The tuition fee is due according to the Schedule of Fees for that year. Non-members in the process of changing their membership to a WELS church shall be charged the non-member fee until officially taken into membership.Payment Information:

1. Parents may elect to make 10 equal tuition payments instead of one lump sum payment. If they so elect, tuition fees are due the first of every month for ten months (August-May).

2. Arrangements for a different schedule of payment can be made with prior approval of the Board for Parish Education. A $40 late charge will be assessed on the 10th of each month if the payment has not been received (unless other arrangements have been made).

3. A current bank rate service fee of $36 will be assessed on all checks returned for insufficient funds.4. If accounts remain delinquent one month after your payment is due, diplomas, and report cards may

be withheld until payment is made in full.

5. Families with accounts delinquent may not be allowed to enroll their children for the next school year until the balance has been paid in full.

Any scholarship received is put towards tuition only and possible tutoring services. Scholarships will not cover fees. To make your payment, make your check or money order out to Peace Lutheran School and either drop it off in the school office or mail it to the following address:

Peace Lutheran Church and School1611 30th Avenue WestBradenton, FL 34205

SCHOOL HOURSClassroom doors open at 8:00 AM; classes begin promptly at 8:15 AM. If children need to be dropped off prior to 8:00 AM they will wait inside the courtyard until the classrooms are opened. Classes begin promptly at 8:15 AM.

The noon lunch and recess period begins at 11:45 AM.

All grades dismiss at 3:00 PM. Students not picked up by 3:15 PM will be directed into the After-School Daycare.

When picking up and dropping off children at school use the west entrance and exit from the east driveway.

Children may not leave the school grounds without permission during school hours or before their transportation arrives at the end of the day. School policy and the safety dictate that the teachers know where the students are at all times.

CHECK IN/CHECK OUT PROCEDUREWe have a procedure that requires parents to sign children in or out if they are late or need to leave early for any reason.

To prevent mishaps or injuries, especially to our students, please follow these drop-off and pick-up procedures:

1. ALWAYS drive slowly and cautiously when entering and leaving the school parking lot.2. If arriving late, escort your child to their classroom.3. If picking up early, enter through the front gate and go to your child’s classroom.4. Please pass these instructions on to any persons authorized to pick up your child.

Children are not released from after school care until a parent or other authorized person signs out the child/children.

ABSENCESThe school must be notified by telephone (747-6753) no later than 8:15 AM if a child will be absent from school. If for some reason such notice was not given by telephone, a child must upon his/her return to school, present a written excuse, signed by the parent, stating the reason for the absence. Parents/legal guardians are encouraged to pick up assignments after school.

As much as possible, it is urged that doctor and dentist appointments be made during non-school hours and days. If it is necessary for the pupil to be absent from school for reasons other than sickness, such as a family vacation, the teacher is to be notified in advance. The best time for parents to contact the child's teacher for his/her assignments is after school between 3:00 and 3:30.

Any child who is absent for ten (10) or more days during a quarter, the parents/legal guardians will be notified by letter from the Board for Parish Education that extended absences can affect their child’s performance in school and put promotion to the next grade in jeopardy. More than twenty-five (25) absences over the school year will be reviewed by the Board for Parish Education and may result in retention or dismissal. It is very important that a child be in school not just for the work, but also for the learning opportunities that happen during a day. Chronic absenteeism can drastically affect a child’s learning and development.

Please plan vacations and other appointments appropriately to avoid a school absence. Vacations during school time are strongly discouraged. Students and parents/legal guardians are responsible to see that work missed during a vacation is completed in a timely manner.

LATE ARRIVAL/TARDIESThe front gate will be locked at the beginning of the school day (8:15 am). Students arriving after the gate has been locked must be signed in by a parent. Students arriving late may not be “dropped off” at the curb.

Students arriving late to school because of a medical appointment should bring a written excuse from their physician.

4 tardies per quarter. On the 5th tardy and each additional 3 tardies after that the student serves a 30-minute detention (study hall) from 3:30-4:00 after school (arrangements need to be made with Mr. Zuberbier and the detention served within 7 days)

alternate option—if the parent feels personally responsible, the parent can serve the 3:30-4:00 detention (sweep classrooms, dust, mop, pick weeds) and pay the after school fees of $3.00 per child to be in after school care or pay $20 to be excused from the detention (if this option is used the fee needs to be paid before being excused. This will NOT be something that will be added to billing).

At the end of each quarter the slate will be wiped clean

8:15 is the time school begins so 8:16 will be considered tardy

To avoid confusion, the teachers will use their cell phones to check the time when it comes to tardies.

Please be respectful when entering your classroom.

3. Worshipping together is God pleasing and it further reinforces the foundations of Christian Education. Families that are members of Peace Lutheran Church are expected to be in regular church attendance at Peace. Families of sister congregations are expected to be in regular church attendance at their respective churches. Families without a church home are invited and encouraged to worship at Peace. Families that are members of other churches are expected to be in regular attendance at their home church. While we make no attempts to “steal you away” from your home church, we strongly encourage families from other churches to make every effort to get their children to Peace when their class is involved in worship, such as singing for a service.

4. All children in fifth through eighth grade will attend the Catechism instructional course, which is built into the school curriculum. This course takes a closer look at the teachings of the Bible and what God has to say for our lives here on earth and after in heaven. Whether or not the child is confirmed at the end of eighth grade is a decision made by the parents and child in consultation with the pastor.

5. Parents will support and encourage their child's participation in the usual school and church activities throughout the year.

6. Parents will permit a screening of the child's past records of achievement, behavior, and attitude to take place.

7. Upon request, parents will supply references from their child's previous school or former teacher, including the last report card.

8. Parents must present a current record of immunizations, which complies with the requirements established by the Florida Department of Health.

All new enrollees are accepted for a nine-week probationary period. If it is felt by the Board for Parish Education that they are not meeting school guidelines, they will be asked to continue their education at another school.

KINDERGARTEN ELIGIBILITYA child must be five years of age on or before September 1 to be eligible for Kindergarten. To ensure the child's readiness, he/she may be scheduled for a brief screening prior to the start of school.

ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTSAny pupil transferring from another school must present the last report card from the previous school attended before enrollment can begin.

The school reserves the right to test all who enroll for the purpose of aiding the administration in grade placement. If teachers find that a child has difficulty in the grade he/she has been placed, the matter will be discussed with the parents/legal guardians, the child’s teacher and the principal, and proper adjustment will be made for the child's well-being.

ENROLLMENT PROCEDURENon-church member parents/legal guardians wishing to enroll their child in Peace Lutheran School will follow the enrollment procedure outlined below:

The Principal will meet with the parents/legal guardians to discuss any general questions and review the:

1. Student’s previous academic records (if applicable).2. The Principal will schedule a meeting between himself, the teacher, and the parents/legal

guardians to discuss specific questions and items pertinent to enrollment.3. The necessary paperwork will be filled out and turned in prior to the student certificate to be

copied for our records.4. Meet with Congregation Pastor to discuss the spiritual aspects of Peace Lutheran Church and

School 5. Final enrollment approval will be made by the Board for Parish Education.

RULES OF CONDUCTThe children should strive to show Christian love, kindness, respect, and consideration toward all pupils in the school and toward everyone with whom they come into contact in their school life.

CHRISTIAN DISCIPLINEAt Peace Lutheran School, the basis of everything taught is the Word of God. This is the foundation and guide for all activities. It should then be evident that all of the children should reflect the faith that they have in their hearts in their general behavior and attitudes. The children will be taught to always be thankful that God has chosen them to be his own and to show their love for their Savior through proper Christian conduct. “This is love for God: to obey His commands.” 1 John 5:3.

Christ Jesus expects all of His children to live lives that are pleasing to Him. In keeping with God’s Word, we also expect the children in our school to conduct themselves as Christian young people at all times, whether they are in school, church, or at any school sponsored event.

The Bible is, of course, the guide used for discipline in our school. We can all look to Jesus as the perfect example of how we are to conduct ourselves. We hope and pray the children will follow this example.

Any discipline that is carried out in the spirit of Christian love is meant to correct the behavior, not to punish the child. Any disciplinary action that is carried out at Peace Lutheran School will be dealt with in this order: Teacher, Principal, and Board for Parish Education. We sincerely hope and pray that no discipline will ever have to go beyond the teacher.

Conduct that will cause disciplinary action are but not limited to:

1. Disrespect for teacher(s)2. Profanity3. Disobedience/refusal to work or follow instructions4. Harassment of fellow students

Revised April 2016 Page 13

Page 14: TABLE OF CONTENT - Peace Lutheran Web viewSchool Handbook. Containing the Policies, Procedures, and Regulations of: Peace Lutheran School . 1611 30th Ave W. ... to train children in

5. Destruction of school property/misuse or abuse of classmates' property6. Wearing of inappropriate clothing7. Excessive unexcused absences from school8. Attitudes/actions detrimental to the spiritual and physical welfare of other students

Discipline at Peace is always carried out in Christian love by teachers who genuinely care about each child. The principal and teachers are given full discretion whenever discipline is deemed necessary. Naturally, teachers will seek to avoid demeaning or embarrassing students in front of classmates. Normal disciplinary procedures include the following: personal counseling with the child, the loss of privileges, extra duties, phone calls home to the parents, and the issuing of demerits, detentions, and suspensions.

Pupils are expected to show Christian love and kindness toward all pupils, helpers, teachers and pastors as a means of thanking God for the blessings He has given them. This will require that they strive to conduct themselves in such a manner that they will not interfere with the work and play of others. Occasionally, students may be detained after school for various offenses, and transportation will be the responsibility of the parents.

Note: Due to the severity of a given offense, the Board for Parish Education reserves the right of expulsion to be used prior to the use of an extended suspension from school.

ALCOHOL AND OTHER DRUGSGod tells us that our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit. We are fearfully and wonderfully made. Caring for our bodies includes avoidance of those substances that can cause harm.

Students will not possess or use alcohol, tobacco, controlled substances, or abuse the use of non-prescription drugs anywhere on school property or at any school-related event.

Violation of this policy may result in an automatic suspension. A second violation may result in expulsion. In both situations, notification of proper authorities in the community will take place. The parents will be required to set up a conference with the teacher, principal, pastor, child, and chairman of the Board for Parish Education before the child will be allowed back to school. Anytime a child is sent home, the Board for Parish Education will become involved.

SMOKE-FREE ENVIRONMENTPeace Lutheran School is a smoke-free environment. Smoking and use of tobacco products will not be allowed within the building or on the campus of Peace Lutheran School at any time.

OBJECTIONABLE ITEMSToys, comic books, radio/tape players, cassettes, CD's/DVD’s, MP3 players, electronic games, toy guns, excessive jewelry, etc., are not to be brought to school unless specifically asked for by the teacher. Such items are considered detrimental to the classroom environment and will be confiscated during the day and returned at the end of the school day. Peace Lutheran School will not be held responsible for any item that becomes

dysfunctional because of misuse by any student or individual not authorized to use said item(s) by a parent or guardian.

Cell phones will not be allowed to be used in school without the teacher’s permission and will be collected by the teachers and kept in the school office during the school day. The child will not receive their phone until the parents pick them up in the afternoon.

Peace Lutheran practices a zero tolerance policy for possession of any dangerous objects. Possession of any such weapon may be grounds for immediate expulsion.

In all instances of possession of a dangerous object/weapon, the parents will be required to set up a conference with the teacher, principal, pastor, child, and chairman of the Board for Parish Education to determine their future at Peace Lutheran School.

In all cases of possession of a dangerous object/weapon, the Board for Parish Education and appropriate community authorities will become involved. The principal is responsible for contacting local authorities and dealing with any media attention.

FIELD TRIPSField trips are planned throughout the course of the school year to provide enriching experiences for our children and expand their educational horizons. All pupils are expected to attend such trips as part of the regular school day. Parents/legal guardians are encouraged to assist on these trips as drivers and chaperones. Children with outstanding assignments will not be permitted to participate in field trips but will be required to attend school on that day, working in another classroom. Failure to have an updated Emergency Contact form filled out will result in your child not being allowed to leave school property. Signed permission slips are necessary to go on field trips.

TRANSPORTATIONParents/guardians are responsible for providing transportation for their children to and from school. Lists of names will be provided to make possible the forming of car pools. Parents are expected to pick up their children within 15 minutes after the end of classes for the day. If students are not picked up by 3:15 PM, they will be placed in the After-School Care program and will be charged accordingly. If there is a change in your regular transportation routine, please notify the school ahead of time.

PARTICIPATION IN SCHOOL ACTIVITIES BY STUDENTSStudents who have been absent during the day because of illness will not be allowed to participate in the extra-curricular activities on that same day. This does not include students who missed a portion of the day due to medical appointments.

ATHLETICS & CO-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIESAll students participating in extra-curricular activities are required to conduct themselves as role models, to demonstrate good citizenship, and to comply with all rules and regulations of Peace Lutheran or be subject to suspension or dismissal (expulsion) from school and/or the activity involved. Coaches or advisors may apply further reasonable and necessary rules unique to the particular activity for which they have responsibility and which have been approved by the school administration in advance, such as choir or athletics.

Upper grade students (5-8) may participate in our interscholastic flag football and basketball programs. Practices are led by either a faculty member, layperson from the congregation, or school parent volunteer.

We have only a general guideline concerning eligibility of students in sports activities. If a student's participation in sports activities does not allow him/her sufficient time to do his/her school work or is hindering his/her academic growth, the child is ineligible for participation. Such a judgment of ineligibility is made by the teacher, coach, and principal.

Peace Lutheran students and their guests may be asked to leave an activity if they conduct themselves in an inappropriate manner or violate the Handbook. No money will be refunded, if it was a paid activity.

ATHLETICSPeace Lutheran School’s athletic programs are part of a Christ centered educational plan to equip students spiritually, mentally, socially, and physically. Athletics are meant to give students an opportunity to “put their faith into practice,” and to promote the qualities of sportsmanship, teamwork, fair-play, and wholesome competition.

1. All aspects of life are to be done to glorify God, this includes play in athletics. A player’s and coach’s conduct results from thankfulness to God. Whenever we participate in sports, we do it in the name of Jesus, we have been given different gifts. Gifts are to be used to glorify God, and in the emphasis of team play.

2. Student athletes are to be taught to respect authority. They are to respect their coach. They are to respect all officials and coaches who are placed over the players. Players and coaches are to be self-controlled with calls made during games. Players are to respect anyone else in authority, such as coaches from opposing teams or those that supervise a facility.

3. Respect of property is observed during practices and games.4. Each time an athlete participates, he or she, has an opportunity to give glory to God. Therefore, each

athlete must exercise self-control in language and behavior. In the unlikely event of the loss of self-control, any player receiving a technical foul for unsportsmanlike conduct is out for the remainder of the game.

5. When visiting another school, we are to respect the rules of that school and use of facility. Athletes stay on the bench during the game, unless an emergency arises; and the coach has given approval to leave. Players are not to go in to the bleachers or other places during a game.

6. Players are expected to be at games and practices. If there is a reason to miss, the coach must be notified before the game or practice. Missing practice or game without excuse may result in loss of playing time.

7. All players who practice will play in a game.8. Students must be at school during the day, on game and practice days, in order to play.9. Athletes are to arrive and leave games in a timely manner.

Parents are to encourage, and lead by example, in all the before mentioned points.

STUDENT ATHLETE RIGHTS AND RESPONSIBILITIESStudents participating in the interscholastic athletic program are to be governed by the rights, protections and responsibilities prescribed by Peace Lutheran. Students who participate in the interscholastic program are required to meet the eligibility requirements and follow the rules of Peace Lutheran and are expected to conduct themselves in a safe and sporting manner toward all persons associated with the athletic program (i.e. fairness, courteous manner, and graceful acceptance of results).

TRAVEL REGULATIONS1. Parents are responsible to transport their children to and from practice and games. If you are not able

to transport your child, please make arrangements with another parent. If no other transportation is available, contact the coach.

2. An athlete who travels to an away game with another driver must return with his/her driver. The only exception to this rule would be a request made in person by the parent/guardian of an athlete to the coach in charge of his or her child only.

3. Please be aware that food and drink is to be provided by the parents for all games and tournaments. The school will not be responsible for supplying meals for the team.

DRESS CODEPupils are expected to attend class clean and modestly dressed at all times. Offensive and non-modest appearance, including excessive make-up, spaghetti straps, and backless tops, will not be allowed and are under the discretion of the faculty. Promotional t-shirts, faded or torn clothing, and warm-up suits are considered inappropriate attire in a school environment and should be avoided. Short-shorts and mini-skirts are not acceptable. The hem of the skirt or shorts should be no shorter than one inch above the knee. Caps should not be worn inside.

For students in 6th through 8th grade, the dress code shall be a polo shirt (tucked in) and tan khaki shorts/pants with a belt. Girls may wear a tan khaki skirt. Socks with closed toed shoe are also required.

It is the parent/guardian’s responsibility to supervise what your child wears so that his/her attire is in good taste is neat, and clean and have your child use appropriate hygiene products. The excessive use of makeup, hair spray, perfume, cologne, etc. is not allowed.

Every Monday a chapel service is held for the students and their parents and friends. For this service students are encouraged to wear nicer clothing, such as skirts or dresses for girls and slacks and dress shirts for boys. A Peace logo polo would be appropriate attire. A change of clothes may be brought for the remainder of the day. When the children sing in church on Sunday mornings, they likewise are encouraged to dress neatly.

Students dressed in an inappropriate manner according to this dress code will be asked to telephone their parents/legal guardians to have them bring appropriate attire to them at school.

LICE/NIT POLICYIf lice or nits (lice eggs) are discovered on any student, the parents will be immediately notified to pick up their child and keep them home until the student tis free of all lice and/or nits. Your child’s teacher and/or the principal must inspect the child’s hair before they will be admitted to class upon their return.

FRIDAY FLYERThe Friday Flyer is Peace's weekly newsletter that is sent home with the students each Friday of the school year. Parents are expected to read the Friday Flyer so they stay informed regarding all scheduled events and activities of the school. A monthly calendar, field trip forms, and permission forms are attached, as needed.

HOME VISITS/BACK TO SCHOOL NIGHTIn order to facilitate an open, (home-school communication) home visits are sometimes scheduled by the teachers in early August. Seeing the child in the home setting and getting to know the parents on a more personal basis are factors that help to serve the overall educational process. A packet of information, including a school supply list, is shared with parents. The home visit also provides parents with the opportunity to ask questions and discuss with the teacher the unique nature of each child.

Parents and students are also asked to attend the Back to School Night for information about the upcoming school year.

PARENT-TEACHER CONFERENCESFollowing the end of the first quarter, parents are asked to meet with the teacher in a scheduled Parent-Teacher Conference. Conferences may also be scheduled throughout the year as needed. The child's progress, attitude toward and cooperation with the teacher and fellow classmates, and work and study habits will be evaluated. If at any time during the school year parents have questions concerning their child's progress or behavior at school, they are urged to call the teacher for a phone conference and/or arrange a mutually convenient time to meet.

ACADEMIC REPORTING AND RECORDSReport cards are issued after each nine-week period of school. The following grading system is used in grades 3 through 8:

93-100% "A" Excellent85-92% "B" Above Average77-84% "C" Average70-76% "D" Below Average

Below 70% "F" Failure

In an effort to keep parents/legal guardians up-to-date on their child's progress and to assure that parents/legal guardians see their child's school work, we will be sending all completed and graded papers home on a regular basis

Revised April 2016 Page 18

Page 19: TABLE OF CONTENT - Peace Lutheran Web viewSchool Handbook. Containing the Policies, Procedures, and Regulations of: Peace Lutheran School . 1611 30th Ave W. ... to train children in

Interim reports will be sent home in the middle of each quarter. This will prevent any “surprises” at report card time. All report card envelopes and interim reports are to be signed by the parents and returned to the teacher.

We urge parents/legal guardians to take time to discuss the report card with their child. After each of the first three-quarters, parents/legal guardians are to retain the report card, sign in the proper space, and return only the envelope portion of the report card to school.

If there are any questions concerning your child’s progress in school, feel free to discuss them with your child’s teacher.

HOMEWORKA good share of each child's day is set aside for study time and for doing assignments. There will be areas where some of the work will have to be finished at home. Parents can expect 10 minutes of homework per grade. It is important that all assignments are completed on time. Parents/legal guardians, please work with your child to develop the ability to complete tasks on time.

1. Following are the guidelines for a student who does not complete his assignments on time: 2. If the problem of uncompleted work continues, the teacher will notify the parent(s) by telephone. If

the problem continues, a meeting with the student, student’s parent(s), and teacher will be arranged.3. If there is still no noticeable change, the teacher will inform the principal. A suspension may result. If a

suspension occurs more than twice, the principal may suspend the student for more than one day. The child and his/her parent(s) must then appear before the principal and the results presented to Board for Parish Education to finalize conditions of reinstatement.

CURRICULUM AND ACHIEVEMENT TESTINGEach year the students in grades 3 through 8 are tested using a multiple-assessment test called TerraNova published by CTB McGraw-Hill. Accurate records of these are shared with the parents each year and filed in each student's permanent record. Test results are utilized to assist in the guidance and instruction of each individual child and for general curriculum planning and do not solely determine grade placement.

As a whole the schools of the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod score well above the national averages.

SOLICITATIONSSoliciting for sale of goods, marathons, raffles, or such related items will not be permitted through our student body, unless prior approval has been given by the Board for Parish Education.

SCHOOL TELEPHONE USAGEChildren are not allowed to use the school phone, except in cases of emergency and only with the permission of a teacher. Students are not allowed to use cell phones at school. If parents deem it necessary that a child carry a cell phone for security reasons, it must be turned off and left in the custody of the student’s teacher.

To help keep class distractions to a minimum, outgoing calls by students will be limited to recess, lunchtime or after school. Messages can be left in the school office daily between 7:30 AM and 4:00 PM. A school directory listing all the families attending Peace is issued in early fall.

HEALTHBy Florida law, each child entering kindergarten is required to have a physical examination (or record of a recent examination done in Florida). The State of Florida advises a physical examination in the fourth grade. The State of Florida requires a physical examination for those students entering seventh grade.

Each child in each grade level, by law, must have on file in the school office HRS Form 680 showing that all immunizations are up-to-date. Additional immunizations are required as a child enters seventh grade. Failure to have the proper immunization record filed will result in your child not being allowed in school until the proper immunizations have been obtained and the records have been submitted. If you are moving from another state, Florida law requires a physical examination by a physician in Florida, regardless of grade level, and the proper form completed prior to beginning school.

If a child should become ill while at school, or if he/she should need the immediate care of a physician, we will try to inform the parents/legal guardians of this fact. In the event of an emergency, the principal will see that the child receives immediate care. Therefore, it is imperative to have an up-to-date Emergency Contact form completed. Please immediately provide any changes, especially phone numbers, to the office so the records are correct.

MEDICATIONSEvery effort shall be made to schedule the administration of medication outside of school hours. If this is not possible, it must be understood by the parent/guardian that the medication will be administered and documented by school staff.

All prescription and non-prescription medication will be kept in a secure location.

All medications (i.e. prescription and any over the counter medications) must be turned over to the teacher upon arrival at school. Medication of any kind will not be given to children without the written authorization of parents. An emergency card will be filled out by parents before the start of school and filed in the principal's office.

Medication to be given for any period of time will require written permission and instructions from a person licensed to prescribe as described in the Nurse Practice Act. A medication intake form will be available to the parent/guardian to authorize school staff to administer medication.

All medication to be administered requires:1. Written orders from licensed prescription detailing the name of the medication, dosage, time to be

given, and the expected duration of administration. Medication must be brought to school in the original container appropriately labeled by the licensed prescription for the prescription drugs or by manufacturer for non-prescription.

2. That a record be kept designating time and date of dispensation and will include the initials of persons Revised April 2016 Page 20

administering the medication, indicating that the medication has been examined and determined to be in the original container accepted by the school.

3. Prescribed medication will not be administered by injection by staff unless a student is susceptible to a predetermined condition. The parent(s) will submit a written statement that grants a staff member the authority to act according to the specific written orders and supporting directions provided by a licensed prescription (e.g., medication administered to counteract a reaction to peanut butter or a bee sting).

SINGING IN CHURCHThe students of our school will sing periodically throughout the year at our 9:30 AM Sunday service. Children are expected to be in attendance when their class is scheduled to sing. Singing attendance will be recorded for parents on each quarterly report card.

SCHOOL PROPERTYPride should be taken in maintaining a clean school building and its surrounding playground. Each student should do his/her part in helping keep the school clean and orderly. Children should make a conscientious effort not to litter on the playground. No gum chewing will be allowed during the school day. Anyone who willfully or carelessly damages or destroys school property will be held financially responsible and may face disciplinary action.

THEFTCommitting and act of theft will result in immediate disciplinary action and can include dismissal from school. Students found guilty of theft will also be required to pay for or replace the item(s) stolen. When appropriate, proper outside authorities will be contacted. Any student involved in theft will be subject to disciplinary action up to and including expulsion.

SEARCH AND SEIZURESchool authorities may seize any contraband, substance, or object the possession of which is illegal, or any material or object that violates a school rule or poses a hazard to the safety and good order of the school. Students are not to bring these items to school or to any school-sponsored function.

Authority to Conduct a Search : The law allows school authorities to search students and their personal property when they have reasonable suspicion that a particular student is in possession of something prohibited by school rules or by law.

1. General Inspection: School authorities reserve the right to make general inspections of desks for purposes including but not limited to safety, cleanliness, retrieval of school material, and maintenance. Such general inspections shall not include searching personal items stored in clothing, bag or purses, unless reasonable and specific suspicion exists.

Revised April 2016 Page 21

Page 22: TABLE OF CONTENT - Peace Lutheran Web viewSchool Handbook. Containing the Policies, Procedures, and Regulations of: Peace Lutheran School . 1611 30th Ave W. ... to train children in

2. Random Desk/Storage Area Inspections: All storage areas provided for student use on school premises remain the property of the school and are subject to inspection, for maintenance, and search. No student shall impede access to any desk or storage area.

3. Personal Searches: A student's person and/or personal effects (e.g., purse, backpack, etc.) may be searched when school authorities have reasonable suspicion to believe that the student is in possession of illegal or unauthorized items.

Any student who refuses to submit to a reasonable search by school authorities will be subject to disciplinary action. School authorities may detain the student pending the notification and arrival or the student's parent/guardian and/or law officials as appropriate.

PARENT/GUARDIAN INVOLVEMENTLet God’s Word be the guide for you and your family in all phases of daily life.
