SCES PTA Meeting Minutes Nov.11, 2013 We opened the meeting with a raffle provided by Linda Long, Membership Chair. Mrs.Textoris won a $25 gift certificate to Fireworks Pizza. Melissa Kurowski read off the upcoming events during her Presidents Report. Vice president, Heather Burton-‐Zalar, reviewed fundraising opportunities through retail programs; specifically the Amazon link. Treasurer, Pieta West, gave us an update on all things financial. Our cash balance at the time of the meeting was $23,180, with a projected balance June 30, 2014 of $12,891. Secretary, Jennifer Lebor, provided the meeting minutes from October. No corrections were noted.

Secretary’s Report Jennifer Lebor
Principal, Derek Racino, provided several updates: The outdoor classroom project was completed by Eagle Scout candidate Harrison Wise. Mr. Racino is pleased with the result. The Veterans Day assembly was a great success, and he would like to thank music teacher Megan Cassida. There has been an excellent response to the Wath Dog Dads program, with all of the available volunteer dates full. American Education Week will be the week of Nov 18. Thanks to TRT Rosemary Johnson, all of the I-‐Pads have been set up and the “Interactive Achievement Assessments” used countywide are now loaded on all 40 I-‐Pads.
Committee Reports Sarah Kilbey provided the Sammy Cares update. The students were in the midst of the “Making Change for Charity” drive to benefit the Loudoun Homeless Services Center.
Fall Festival update was given by Tricia Fontanilla. Overall feedback was positive: There was a great turnout of staff. Tricia thanks Mr.Racino and Mrs.Textoris for their involvement. Flashlight Tag was the most popular new addition. The “Tape the Principal” was also popular. Tricia mentioned that even with 60 volunteers, they felt shorthanded. In the future, it is recommended to avoid scheduling Fall Festival, Fall Fundraiser delivery, and After School Activity registrations all in the same week. Cake Walk needs to move. Concessions could have used more volunteers. Tricia is willing to assist next year’s chairperson, to ensure a smooth transition. Fall Fundraising feedback was provided by Emily Kelly. In the future, the committee will request that a ConnectEd phone call be made to remind people to pick up their products. The event was not as successful in the second year of selling Classic Cookie as hoped. It made $4,609.50.
Tracey Kendall provided a report for Family Movie Night. The showing of Despicable Me yielded $209.91. It was suggested that perhaps we limit this event to younger grades, to better capture the audience’s attention. Mr. Racino mentioned that he would be ordering a better cable for connecting the sound system, which should also help with volume. Linda Long gave a Membership update, telling us about additional discounts that she has secured for PTA members. Donna Meek shared the Spirit Night details for Jersey Mike’s in November and Buffalo Wild Wings in December. Courtney Partlow submitted a detailed report regarding the upcoming Talent Show. She provided all of the specifics: dates, times, location. The question was raised to possibly ask the Heritage High School conduct concession sales. Discussion was unresolved at the meeting, and President Melissa Kurowski planned to follow up with Courtney. We discussed hiring a videographer to record the event and sell DVDs for $15ea. The idea was well received. Courtney requested an increase to the budget.
Motion to increase the budget to $400: Linda Long Motion Seconded: Emily Kelly Motion Passed
The Silent Auction details were shared by Tania Kline, who provided a copy of the donation solicitation letter and told us about the Kids’ Raffle table. Holiday Shoppe details were given by Melissa Allard. Melissa Allard also informed us of the Spirit Wear progress. Sales have earned $450 thus far, which is more than the entire previous year. A BoxTops report was provided. The estimated income in December is predicted to be $1235.25. Jill Schneider made a request for a Zoomba instructor for ASA. Vasilia Ravaris provided a report of the Book Swap event. The leftover books were donated to Loudoun Literacy. Emily Kelly told us about upcoming Staff Appreciation event: Italian luncheon. She requested volunteers to provide food and assist during the event. Alexis Schaeffer reminded all of us to please provide copies of flyers to all staff.
Old Business
No old business was raised outside of the content of committee reports.
New Business Jennifer Lebor asked if anyone is interested in providing nominations for Loudoun County Teacher of the Year awards.
Community Interest Melissa Kurowski asked for the donation of two used spirit wear items to contribute toward retirement gifts for two county employees. We were reminded that there is still a need for volunteers in the cafeteria during AEW. Meeting Adjourned.
