RULES AND REGULATIONA. ADMISSION AND ELIGIBILITY
1. The duration of the course leading to the Post Graduate Diploma In ThermalPower Plant Engineering shall be one academic year(52 weeks) divided intotwo semesters.
A candidate shall have to pass all the two semester examinations within amaximum period of three years of his/her admission to the first semester ofPost Graduate Diploma In Thermal Power Plant Engineering programmefailing which he/she will be deemed to be unfit for the programme. However,a candidate, who having passed the first semester examination discontinueshis studies, for legitimate and justified reasons may be permitted to joinsecond semester within one year of his passing the first semesterexamination.
2. The minimum qualifications for admissions to the first semester of PostGraduate Diploma In Thermal Power Plant Engineering programme shall be aBachelor degree in Engineering or AMIE or equivalent degree in Mechanical,Electrical, Electronics./Control & Instrumentation/ Power Engineering. Thoseappearing in their final year examination may also apply. However, they mustsubmit their result at the time of counseling. The Admission to this P.G.Diploma will be done on the basis of Merit based on a Common Entrance Test(CET) followed by counseling. CET will be conducted on rotation basis by theInstitutes in the sequence New Delhi, Nagpur, Neyveli and Durgapurrespectively.
3.(a) The first semester examination shall be open to a regular student who
I) has been on the rolls of the Institute during the first semester;II) has at least 75% attendance in the class during the semester;III) has obtained pass marks in the internal assessment/
workshop/practical exam. andIV) bears a good moral character
(b) The second semester examination shall be open to a regular student who:
i) has been on the rolls of the Institute for the concerned semesterii) has at least 75% attendance in the class during the semester;iii) has passed the first semester examination andiv) bears a good moral character.
B. EXAMINATION AND FEES
4. Every candidate shall be examined in the subject(s) as laid down in theScheme of Examinations/Syllabus prescribed . Course/Tuition fee should bedivided equally into two parts. Semester 1 fee should be deposited at the timeof counseling. Semester 2 fee should be deposited by 20th February of eachyear failing which a late fee of Rs.100/- per day may be charged. Each PGDCstudent will be charged a fee of Rs 200/- per subject as examination fee which

may be deposited one month before start of the semester examination ie. Rs.1600/- for first semester and Rs 1600/- for second semester.
5. The external examiner(s) will set the question papers as per the criteria laiddown in the Scheme of Examination for the program. Evaluation of semester
exam answer sheets will not be done in the same Institute. All the writtensemester exams will be of three hour duration.
6. The medium of instruction and examination shall be English.
7. Mobile phones, any extra piece of paper, notebook are banned in the examhall. A student indulging in exam malpractices may be expelled by theinvigilator/Chief Supdt. for one year from the exam and he will be able to takethe semester exams only after one year.
8. The amount of examination fee to be paid by a candidate for each semester
shall be as per the decision of NPTI from time to time.
9. The Examination for the first semesters shall ordinarily be held in the month ofJanuary and for the second semester in the month of July or on such dates asmay be fixed by the Director General, NPTI.
Supplementary examinations will be held for re-appear/failed candidatesas under:-

10. The Course Coordinator of the concerned Institute shall forward the internal testmarks to the Principal Director/ Director at least one week before thecommencement of each semester examination alongwith list of the eligiblestudents who have satisfied the requirements of rules for appearing in theExamination.
11. (i) As soon as possible, after the competition of the examination the Principal
Director/ Director shall publish a list of candidates who have passed theSemester Examination.
(ii) Each successful candidate shall receive a copy of the detailed marks cardon having passed the Semester Examination.
12. The list of successful candidates after the Second semester examination shall bearranged as under in two divisions on the basis of the aggregate marksobtained in the first and second semester examinations taken together andthe division obtained by the candidate will be stated in his certificate.
a) Those who obtain 50% marks but less than 60% marksSECOND DIVISION;
b) Those who obtain 60% or more marks -

FIRST DIVISION;
c) Those who pass all the two semester examinations at the first attemptobtaining 75% or more marks in the aggregate shall be declared tohave passed with - DISTINCTION
C. EVALUATION
13. (i) The Principal Director/ Course Coordinator of the Institute will preservethe records on the basis of which the, Internal Assessment awardshave been prepared upto one month from the date of declaration of thesemester examination results. This record will be disposed off after onemonth. The first Semester results must be declared before 20 th ofFebruary of each year.
14. (i) The internal assessment/practical/workshop/training report/project
report award of a candidate who fails in any semester/paper(s) shall becarried forward to the next examination.
(ii) Candidate(s) who has not obtained pass marks in the InternalAssessment in any paper(s) will not be allowed to take examination inthe said paper(s) in the relevant semester. He/she will, however, beprovided opportunity to appear before the Committee of Examiners, tobe constituted by the Principal Director/ Director of the concernedInstitute to re-assess performance of the candidate and the internalassessment given by the Committee shall be final.
(iii) A candidate who fails to obtain pass marks in training report/projectreport shall be offered opportunity to undergo training again andconduct another project as the case may be and the same shall beassessed by a board of examinations appointed by the PrincipalDirector.
(iv) A candidate who fails to obtain pass marks in ROJT/practical/viva-voceshall have to re-appear before the board of examiners constituted bythe PD/Director.
15. (i) The candidate shall be required to submit three copies of his ProjectReport. The last date for receipt of Project Report in the office of theInstitute shall be one week before the commencement of the Secondsemester Examination.
In exceptional cases, the Director General may, on therecommendation of the Principal/Director of Institute, extend the lastdate of receipt of the project Report, till the commencement of theSecond semester examination, with late fee.
(ii) The Project Report shall be evaluated as per the guidelines specified in
the Scheme of Examination, jointly by the external and the internalexaminers. The appointment of the external examiner shall be made bythe Director General on the recommendation of the Principal Director ofthe respective institute.

(iii) The marks obtained by the candidate for the project report shall betaken into account when he appears in any future examination underreappear clause.
16. (a) The comprehensive viva-voce/workshop shall be conducted by a Boardof Examiners to be appointed by the Director General on therecommendation of the Principal Director/Director of the respectiveinstitute consisting of the following members:-
i) One Internal Faculty nominated by the Director of the concernedInstitute;
ii) One or Two External Examiners from the Industry/Academicfield
(b) The marks obtained by the candidate for the viva-voce/workshop shall
be taken into account when he appears in any future examinationunder re-appear clause.
17. The Project Report and Training Report, wherever specified will be submittedin the typed form as per the following requirements:
(i) The typing should be done on both sides of the paper (instead of singleside printing)
(ii) The font size should be 12 with Times Roman Format.(iii) The Project Report/Training Report may be typed in 1.5 (one and a
half) space. But the References/Bibliography should be typed insingle space.
(iv) The paper should be A-4 size.(v) Two copies meant for the purpose of evaluation may be bound in
paper-back form and one copy should be in hard binding.(vi) Students will select topic of the project by 30th October of each year.
Course Coordinator will submit the consolidated list of project withname of students to the Principal Director/Director on first working dayof November.
D PROMOTION AND REAPPEAR
18. The minimum percentage of marks to pass the examination in each semestershall be :-
a) 45% in each written paper and internal assessment separately;b) 45% in Training Report/Project Report and Viva-Voce separately.c) 50% in the total of each semester examination.d) A candidate who has secured minimum marks to pass in each paper but
has not secured the minimum marks required to pass in aggregate for thesemester concerned may take re-examination (in not more than twopapers) to obtain the aggregate percentage required to pass the
semester.
19. A candidate whose result is declared late without any fault on his/her part,may attend classes for the next higher semester provisionally at his own risk

and responsibility, subject to his/her passing the concerned semesterexamination. In case a candidate fails to pass the concerned semesterexamination, his/her attendance/internal assessment in the next highersemester in which he was allowed to attend classes provisionally will standcancelled.
20. A candidate shall be promoted to the next higher semester if he/she passes atleast 50% of the theoretical papers (i.e. excluding subjects in which marking isdone on the basis of Viva Voce) having prescribed in the semester, failingwhich he/she shall be declared as FAIL in that semester and he/she shall berequired to appear in the failed semester in all the papers currently in force as,a private candidate (as ex-student).
EXPLANATION : 50% of five papers will be taken as three and that ofseven papers as four and that of nine papers as five under this Clause.
E. OTHER PROVISIONS
21. Question paper for the External exams will be common for all the institute andwill be set by a faculty who will be paid honorarium of Rs. 2500/- per subjectplus postage charges on actual basis. Question paper setting will beresponsibility of one of the institute on rotation basis ie. New Delhi, Nagpur,Neyveli and Durgapur respectively. Question papers will be broadly subjectivein nature.
22. Answer sheets of the Semester exams will not be evaluated in the parentinstitute and sent for outside evaluation. The evaluator will be paid anhonorarium @ Rs. 40 per copy plus postage on actual basis. For evaluatingthe project report or conducting viva voce the external and the internalexaminer will be paid honorarium of Rs. 40/- and Rs. 20/- respectively perstudent plus TA. Similarly faculty evaluating for simulator will be paidhonorarium @ Rs. 20/- per student.
23. The invigilators in the semester exams will be paid a honorarium of Rs. 200/-per sitting of 3 hour. For 30 students one invigilator, for 30-60 students twoinvigilator and for more than 60 students 3 invigilators may be employed.Principal Director/ Director in-charge will act as Chief Superintendant of the
examination and will be responsible for smooth conduct of examination andshall be paid a lump sum honorarium of Rs 2000/- for the semester finalexams. A centre clerk and two peons (for sealing, water serving etc.) may beappointed by the Chief Supdt. for conduct of semester examination and maybe paid an honorarium of Rs.120/- and Rs.50/- per sitting respectively. Thecentre clerk will assist the Chief Supdt. in making seat plan, maintenance offiles (attendance, billing, dispatch of answer sheets etc.) for the exams.
24. Tabulation of the internal and external marks will be done by a faculty andshall be paid honorarium @ Rs. 20 per student. He will be responsible forcollecting all the marks and tabulation and publication of the final result. The
Principal Director /Director Incharge will nominate the tabulator of theirrespective institute. The tabulation records of the passed out students will bekept with Training Officer/Course Coordinator of the respective institutes.

25. A sumptuary allowance of Rs.1000/- per month may be granted to the coursecoordinator of PGDC in TPPE at the respective institutes and this expenditurewill be met from the examination fee collection. The Course Coordinator willmaintain the records of registration, feedback (to be taken once in eachsemester) and will prepare the day wise module of the course and intimate
the faculty for their lectures.
26. Instruction For The Question Paper Setter: The question setter will set twosets of question paper for each subject and mark on the envelop Set A andSet B and seal them separately. The sealed Envelops For Set A and Set Bshould be sealed in a bigger envelop and sent to the respective principaldirector. The Paper setter should maintain the confidentiality of the questionpaper and all rough worksheets should be destroyed. The question should bebroadly subjective in nature and should cover all parts of the syllabus. Themaximum marks for each subject is 100 and pass marks is 45. The timeallowed for each paper will be 3 hours. The subject syllabus can be identified
by the following help:
Power Plant Familiarisation I: This includes the General Introduction module,Industrial Safety module and 5th and 6th week module of Power PlantFamiliarisation.
Power Plant Familiarisation II: This includes 1st to 4th week module of PowerPlant Familiarisation
All other subjects have nomenclature pertaining to the modules which havebeen included.
27. The corporate quality committee will meet every year in the last week of Julyto review the status of the course.
28.Any other provision not contained in the above shall be governed by the rulesand regulations framed by NPTI from time to time.
