OurHistory
OUR HISTORY • 2016 TRAILING OF THE SHEEP FESTIVAL
It was the late 1980s and early 1990s and the Wood River Valley and the West were experiencing tremendous
growth. Farms, ranches and open spaces were being lost to development at an alarming rate and economic losses were forcing families from the land.
The Blaine County Recreation District (BCRD) was working on the Wood River Trail System, a paved Class I trail system, to connect the communities in the Wood River Valley. When some missing pieces of right of way were needed to connect the Trail, BCRD staff went to the local sheep ranchers to ask if they would agree to allow use of some of the sheep driveway that was dedicated in the early 1900s so sheep could move from southern Idaho through the Valley to summer grazing in the mountains, and they graciously agreed. But, after those sections of the trail were paved and the sheep came trailing through as they had done for 150 years, recreational users of the new bike path didn’t understand the sheep on “their” path. It was then that local sheep ranchers, Diane and John Peavey, decided it was time to tell the growing community of newcomers in the Wood River Valley about the place they now called home.
The Peavey’s invited people to meet for coffee at a local café and then walk with the sheep through the Valley to learn about this historic tradition of trailing the sheep in an effort to minimize conflicts between users of the bike path and the sheep. Along the way, they shared stories of the rich history, heritage and culture of the Wood River Valley. It was small, informal and educational, and people loved it.
After a few years of “coffee chats,” the Peaveys met with the local Sun Valley/Ketchum Chamber & Visitor Bureau (CVB) to discuss the idea of creating an event based on the sheep trailing. Seeing the potential to turn a conflict into a celebration of cultural heritage and a unique Fall event to attract visitors, the CVB quickly jumped on board with support and the Trailing of the Sheep Festival was born, officially launching in 1996. Working with the Peaveys, the CVB provided staff, ideas and the funding to create and promote a multi-day event that featured the Sheep Parade down Main Street in Ketchum, the Sheep Folklife Fair, Sheep Tales Storytelling, Lamb Dine-Around and other elements that remain an integral part of the Festival. The CVB, along with the Peaveys and a dedicated committee of volunteers, produced the event until 2003, when the non-profit Trailing of the Sheep Cultural Heritage Center, Inc., was created to take over the reins and continue to develop the Festival.
Celebrating its 20th year in 2016, the Festival has expanded greatly from its humble beginnings, yet the goals and objectives of the Festival remain the same—preserving the stories and history of sheep ranchers and herders, celebrating the rich cultures of the past and present, and entertaining and educating children and adults about the production of local food and fiber that have sustained local economies for generations.

The Next Generation and the Future of Sheep Ranching in the American Westwith moderator, Hal CannonFriday, October 7 • 7:00 pm nexStage Theatre, Main Street, Ketchum
Sheep in the American West produce some of the best lamb and finest wool in the United States and around the world. But daily, its producers face the challenges of volatile markets, imports without quotas, high costs of production, death losses from predators, loss of traditional public land grazing and public hesitancy to cook or serve this remarkable product. Why would one choose the life of a sheep rancher? Yet, they do, generation after generation. It is a family affair.
In 2014, the Trailing of the Sheep Festival began a three-year program of “Celebrating Generations” with a goal of listening, learning, sharing and saving the memories of our western sheep ranching families who live and work the land and are the keepers of open space. The first year in 2014, we honored the visionaries, those first families who found a piece of western land that matched their dreams. They made it home,
made it their life’s work, cared for it and fed the country from its bounty. Last year, we followed families into the hardworking second and third generations, the landowners of today. This year we will listen to the next and future generations.
Join us to hear why they stay in the family business and take on these odds to save lamb and wool for future generations. Hear of their experiences, challenges and opportunities. Listen to their hopes to make the generations old family sheep operation of their childhood into their own.

MIKE GUERRY is the third generation in his family to run the sheep operation headquartered in Castleford, Idaho. Today, he runs 3,500 ewe lambs near his home in winter moving them to the Owyhee Desert in spring and then to the Humboldt–Toiyabe National Forest in northern Nevada in summer. Says Mike, “I love the ranch, the sheep, the work. When I was a kid it was the only place I wanted to be. I raced home after school and spent all my weekends there. Finally my father suggested that I should try ‘being a kid’ before it was too late. But it was the only place I wanted to be.”
LAIRD NOH is the fourth generation in his family to run Noh Sheep Company. In addition to running the family’s ranch with his wife and Idaho educator, Kathleen, Laird served in the Idaho State Senate from 1981-2004. He graduated from the University of Idaho and received an MBA from the University of Chicago. He has received an Honorary Doctor of National Resources from his alma mater, the Silver Ram Award for Leadership from the American Sheep Industry and in 2005 a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Nature Conservancy.

NATURALLY INSPIRING: THE STORY OF WOOLSaturday, October 8 • 2:00 pm Hailey Armory, 701 S. 4th Street, Hailey Presented by Monica Ebert, Wool Laboratory Manager, Montana Wool Lab, Montana State Universitywith Evan Helle, Helle Rambolais/DuckworthFree Event
Ever wonder about the process wool undergoes before it becomes a final product? What do the farmers and ranchers do to produce a high-quality wool clip on a yearly basis? How do manufacturers decide what style of wool they need for a final product? This workshop will cover the story of wool from sheep to shelf on a commercial level to provide an in depth look into the incredible journey of wool.
MONICA EBERT’S passion for the wool industry stems from her lifelong involvement in the sheep industry having been born into a small purebred sheep operation in Northeast Kansas. She received her Bachelor’s degrees in Apparel Design and Apparel Marketing from Kansas State University, and received her Master’s degree in Animal Science from Angelo State University where she focused her research efforts on sheep genetics and wool apparel product development. Her thesis research project challenged her to gain a better understanding of the entire process of the manufacturing of
apparel goods starting with raw wool production. As the Wool Laboratory Manager at Montana State University, she always enjoys the chance to share her passion for wool with others.

MAKE-A-WISH • 2016 TRAILING OF THE SHEEP FESTIVAL
A WISH to attend the Trailing of the Sheep Festival is granted!
Make-A-Wish® Idaho, in partnership with the Trailing of the Sheep Festival, will grant the request of wish kid Shelby to attend this year’s Festival. Shelby, age 20, requested her wish because of her love of animals (especially sheep!) and the outdoors. Most children request “to have a shopping spree,” “to swim with dolphins,” or “to meet a celebrity.” Shelby’s wish request is a first for Make-A-Wish Idaho and the Trailing of the Sheep Festival. She found the Festival online while researching her potential wish choice by looking up her favorite things. She has always loved animals and enjoys arts and crafts. Attending the Trailing of the Sheep Festival was an obvious fit.
Shelby became eligible to receive a wish due to complications with aplastic anemia (a bone marrow failure disease). She
resides in Hill City, South Dakota, and will be traveling to Idaho for the first time with her mom, sister, and grandparents. Shelby is an active young lady who loves the outdoors, animals, and her family. She takes every opportunity she can to horseback ride, hike or swim. She is now healthy and proudly graduated high school in May.
All wishes are meant to provide hope, strength, and joy to the wish child and their families when it is needed most. Although Shelby’s wish has been in the works for years, it has been delayed due to her health and family’s relocation. She is excited to be celebrating her wish during the Festival’s 20th Anniversary this year. The presentation of her wish will be happening throughout the Festival’s many events where Shelby will be welcomed as a VIP guest. She is most looking forward to learning about sheepherding and experiencing Idaho’s beautiful landscape.
Make-A-Wish Idaho grants the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy. Make-A-Wish Idaho serves children throughout the statewith offices in Boise and Pocatello. Since 1986, more than 1,375
children in Idaho have received wishes. Please visit idaho.wish.org to learn more.

AMERICAN LAMB PARTNERS
There is a story behind every bite of American Lamb you take. Before it ever makes it to your table, American Lamb is raised by skilled ranchers across Idaho and the West from pastoral grasslands, to high country meadows.
Fresh, nutritious grass-fed lamb is delicious and a healthy choice for your family. It is rich in omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin E and beta-carotene and lower fat than grain-fed meat. Grass-fed, free-range lamb graze outdoors over long distances where they eat a mix of wild grasses and herbs along with an occasional stroll through rich alfalfa fields. We like to say they are solar-powered. Thanks to our partners.

EVENTS • 2015 TRAILING OF THE SHEEP FESTIVAL
SHEEP SHEARING: Wool is natural, renewable and biodegradable. Since the Stone Age, wool has been appreciated as one of the most effective forms of all-weather protection known to man, and science is yet to produce a fiber that matches its unique properties. See sheep shearing from two of the finest shearers in the industry. It will be held every 30-60 minutes during the Fair with shearers talking about the process. This is a unique opportunity to see sheep shearing up close and in person.
SHEEP CAMPS: Imagine living out on in the mountains for 5-6 months out of the year herding sheep. We bring in authentic sheep camps that show the compact comforts of sheepherders during the summer grazing season.

THE BOISE HIGHLANDERS - BAGPIPERS, DRUMMERS, AND DANCERSThe Boise Highlanders, formed in 1961, are one of the oldest pipe bands in the Northwest. The Highland drums, often cited as the most complex form of snare drumming, complement the pipers. Dancers join the musicians performing the Highland fling and jigs. Pipers and drummers wear the Davidson tartan, while the dancers wear tartans of their choice. This popular group performs regularly throughoutthe region.
PERUVIAN DANCERS AND MUSICIANS(FORMERLY LATINO X)These Peruvian musicians have been playing together for several years performing Andean music and the contemporary dance music of Peru. Band members are: William Leon on drums and quena (flute); Victor Castillo on bass; Edwin Rojas on guitar and vocals; Teofilo Leon on mandolin; Rony Ayllon on keyboard; Rudy Isla on sampona; Roger Tacunan on drums, and Dante on guitar.
OINKARI BASQUE DANCERSThe nationally acclaimed Oinkari Basque Dancers were started by a group of Boise Basque Americans after a trip to the Spanish Basque country in 1960. They began the dance group and called themselves Oinkari (a combination of “oinak” meaning “feet” and “arin” meaning “fast” or “light”). Today many dancers are the sons and daughters of those founders, carrying on the traditions of their ancient homeland. Musicians trained in traditional Basque music and its instruments accompany the dancers. They play Basque music of varying styles and rhythms using traditional instruments including the txistu, button accordions, accompanied by pandareta and other Basque instruments. The music they play could have been heard coming from a Basque hotel or boarding house in Hailey, Shoshone, or Boise over 100 years ago.
POLISH HIGHLANDERSThe Polish celebrate their history, heritage, language and stories of sheepherding since the 5th century in the Tatra Mountains of Poland. Each year for 13 years, they have brought about 30 musicians, dancers and children to the Wood River Valley to experience our Festival. Don’t miss their stories and music at the Sheep Folklife Fair and in the parade.

Celebrating Generations
This year, we are producing the last chapter of “Celebrating Generations” by looking at the next generation. Will they hold onto the dream of their parents and grandparents or find an easier life for themselves? What is the future of sheep ranching? What role will technology play to computerize ranch
landmarks, daily growth and feeding procedures, improving organic genetics and spreadsheet record keeping? We will be hearing from the voices of the next generation on how, and if, they can take up the dream from their great grandfathers and make it their own. This may be the most important storytelling session we have ever had as it addresses the past while leading to the future. It is the most urgent because it talks about whether there is a future for sheep ranching. As this is the 20th year of the Festival, it is the perfect opportunity to focus on the future. And, the final year of this three-year storytelling program that has given us huge insight into the hopes and dreams, as well as threats, of bringing food and fiber into the world while remaining sensitive to the fragile Idaho environment and wildlife.
These oral histories will reflect on family life, history, heritage, traditions and stories in a beautiful portrayal of individuals exploring relationships, fortitude and resilience in order to survive and thrive in these changing times and landscapes. This is a pivotal generation unlike any other we have looked at over the three years of “Celebrating Generations” and sharing their stories is relevant and necessary.
CELEBRATING OUR RICH HISTORY, HERITAGE AND CULTUREThis five-day weekend has become one of the top Fall Festivals in America. For some it is the stories, for some it is the natural fibers, for others it is America’s future sustainability. Still others love the culture. Many come for the food. But, come they do…from around the world to celebrate the Trailing of the Sheep. Please check our website for the many events, performances and family fun.
FIFTY MILES FROM HOME“Our family ranches are disappearing as surely as the carrier pigeon, with less fanfare than the leopard frog. There are fewer grandparents each year, fewer ranch kids who can afford to stay, or want to. Life is not always kind out here. But families, working together, learn who they are, what kind of men and women they will be, determined by the hardships, and the joy, of living here. Every decision has a consequence, every mistake its price.” — Carolyn Dufurrena

Sunday, October 9, 2016 • 12:00 pm • Main Street, Ketchum Join an authentic trailing of the sheep down Ketchum's Main Street as part of their annual migration to winter pastures. 1,500 sheep parade down Ketchum's Main Street with sheep ranching family members and herders headed south. The parade includes historic sheep wagons and participants from the Folklife Fair, each identified by sign-bearing dancers from Footlight Dance Centre.
Sheep for the Parade from Faulkner Land & LivestockThe hosts of this year's sheep for the Parade are the men and women of Faulkner Land & Livestock. John Faulkner, a third-generation sheep rancher, first with his father and two brothers and now with his sons, Mike and Jack, has run the sheep operation since 1956. It has been headquartered in Gooding, Idaho, since 1933. Most of Faulkner's sheep run in the Smokey Mountains at the head of the South Fork of the Boise River, in the hills behind Featherville and Fairfield, and through the Wood River Valley north into the Sawtooth National Recreation Area.
The 2016 Sheep Parade is proudly sponsored by the Limelight Hotel, opening this winter.

The Trailing of the Sheep Festival is a celebration of our area’s unique history and heritage. We honor what shaped this region in Idaho—the sheep and sheep ranching.
This is not a reenactment of an historic event. This is Idaho living history. We’re so glad you could join us!
The mix of wary animals and curious spectators is always an adventure. Help us make the experience fun and successful by following our important parade etiquette:
NO DOGS ARE ALLOWED at the Trailing Parade for the sake of the sheep and the safety of spectators. Please leave your dog(s) at home or in the car. The guard dogs see any dog as a threat, so it is for your dog’s safety to not be at the parade.
Stay on the curb at all times! If you step into the street, others along the route can’t see and if the sheep see a funnel ahead, it will spook them. It is for YOUR SAFETY AND THE SAFETY OF THE SHEEP AND ANIMALS.
Don’t jump into the middle of the sheep—even for that perfect photograph. It will frighten the sheep.
Don’t walk through the sheep. Stay on the curb.
Do communicate with a volunteer or sheep-ranching family member if you spot a problem.
ALWAYS follow the advice and instructions of our volunteers and Parade Officials (noted in safety vests and with name tags.) They are here for your safety and the safety of the sheep.
Do bring children BUT keep them with you at all times.
Do take pictures BUT only from the side of the parade route.
Do enjoy the experience!
In summary: Stay calm. Stay on the curb. No dogs. Keep actions and voices low so as to not spook the sheep. Let the ranchers and herders do their jobs. Be courteous. Have fun.
PARADE ETIQUETTE…Thank ewe for obliging!
