LEDs – or Light-Emitting Diodes – work differently to other bulbs. Instead of using a filament (like old-fashioned bulbs) or a gas (like typical energy-saving bulbs, or ‘CFLs’), they contain microchips that produce light when an electrical current passes through. 1. BASEThe base (or cap) connects the bulb to your light fitting. There are several different types of base, with screw cap and bayonet being two of the most common. To work out which one you need, simply compare and match the base of your existing bulbs with these diagrams…

2. BRIGHTNESSNext, decide how bright you want your bulb to be. Brightness is typically measured in lumens, but to keep things simple we’ve given all LUMiLife bulbs one of three fuss-free brightness ratings: standard, bright or extra bright.

3. BEAM ANGLEA bulb’s beam angle gives you an idea of the light coverage it will provide. Some bulbs give off a softer, wider spread – while others offer a more focused beam, providing a range of lighting effects. For easy reference, all LUMiLife bulbs are labelled either ‘wide’ or ‘narrow’.

4. COLOURFinally, decide what colour light you want from your bulb. This depends on the mood you want to create in a room, as well as personal preference. The LUMiLife range comes in a selection of colours – including cosy warm white, crisp cool white and natural daylight. See ‘StyLED in the kitchen’ (p.6) for a comparison of the three.
