InJuneof2015,U.S.TreasurySecretaryJackLewsaidawomanwillbefeaturedonaredesigned$20billin2020--the100thanniversaryoftheConstitution's19thAmendment,whichgavewomentherighttovote.InAprilof2016,TreasurySecretaryLewannouncedthemostsweepingandhistoricallysymbolicmakeoverofAmericancurrencyinacentury,proposingtoreplacetheslaveholdingAndrewJacksononthe$20billwithHarrietTubman,theformerslaveandabolitionist,andtoaddwomenandcivilrightsleaderstothe$5and$10notes.ThelastwomanonU.S.papercurrencywasMarthaWashington,whowasonthe$1SilverCertificatebetween1891and1896.

Belowisasummaryofthechanges:

TheNew$20

Thefrontofthenew$20willfeaturetheportrait of Harriet Tubman, whose lifewasdedicatedtofightingforliberty.Thereverse of the new $20 will depict theWhiteHouseandanimageofPresidentAndrewJackson.

TheNew$10

The new $10 will celebrate the historyof the women’s suffrage movement,and feature images of Lucretia Mott,Sojourner Truth, Susan B. Anthony,ElizabethCadyStanton,andAlicePaul,alongside the Treasury building. Thefront of the new $10 will retain theportraitofAlexanderHamilton.

TheNew$5

The new $5will honor historic eventsthatoccurredat the LincolnMemorialin service of our democracy, and willfeatureMartinLutherKing,Jr.,MarianAnderson,andEleanorRoosevelt.Thefront of the new $5 will retain theportraitofPresidentLincoln.

"Overthecourseofthelast10months,youputforthhundredsofnamesofpeoplewhohaveplayedapivotalroleinournation’shistory.Manyofyouproposedthatournewcurrencyhighlightdemocracyinactionandreflectthediversityofourgreatnation.Someofyousuggestedweskiptheredesignofthe$10note,which isthenext in lineforasecurityupgrade, and move immediately to redesigning the $20 note. And others proposed unconventional ideas, such ascreatinga$25bill.”

“ThedecisiontoputHarrietTubmanonthenew$20wasdrivenbythousandsofresponseswereceivedfromAmericansyoungandold. I havebeenparticularly struckby themany comments and reactions fromchildren forwhomHarrietTubman isnot justahistorical figure,butarolemodel for leadershipandparticipation inourdemocracy.Yousharedyour thoughts about her life and her works and how they changed our nation and represented ourmost cherishedvalues.”
