About This Guide
How is this guide organized?
This section, “Getting Started,” contains all of the preparation information for the Stress-Fix™ Manicure & Pedicure program, such as learning objectives, pre-work, required materials, and room set-up.
Following this section is the “Training At A Glance” table. This table can serve as your overview reference, showing the module names, timings, and process descriptions for the entire program.
Finally, the program itself is divided into modules, each of which is comprised of one or more lessons. A module is a self-contained portion of the program, usually lasting anywhere from 20 to 90 minutes, while a lesson is a shorter (typically 5-20 minute) topic area. Each module begins with a one-page summary showing the Purpose, Time, Process, and Materials for the module. Use these summary pages to get an overview of the module that follows.

How is the text laid out in this guide?
Every action in the program is described in this guide by a text block like this one, with a margin icon, a title line, and the actual text. The icons are designed to help catch your eye and draw quick attention to “what to do and how to do it.” For example, the icon to the left indicates that you, the instructor, say something next. The title line gives a brief description of what to do, and is followed by the actual script, instruction set, key points, etc. that are needed to complete the action.
A complete list of the margin icons used in this guide is provided on the following page.

We’re going to do a quick activity to help us better understand how stress affects our bodies.
ACTIVITY: RUNNING EXERCISE
Have participants go and stand up at the back of the classroom.
Lead them through a few stretches. Bring your arms overhead with the hands clasped. Lean to the left and hold for 2 breaths. Lean to the right and hold for 2 breaths. Bring the arms behind the back and open the upper chest. Hold for 2 breaths
Instruct them to run in place for 30 seconds. Play some inspirational running music, if available.
When 30 seconds is up, inform the participants that they are now going to run in place for 8 hours.
Analyze the group’s reactions. They probably think you are crazy and there is no way they could run in place for that long.
Have participants return to their seats.

SAY
While none of us can physically run for 8 hours straight, we often act in our day-to-day lives as if we can. We are running around physically and/or mentally from one task to the next without allowing our bodies and minds time to stop and rest.
This chronic stress builds up over time and affects our mental focus, physical health and ability to complete tasks effectively. In order to operate more effectively, our bodies need to recover frequently throughout the day. When our bodies and minds move back and forth between action and rest, our focus improves, our stress decreases and we become more effective in completing tasks.

Slide 7
SAY
Visualization often helps calm the body and gives it time to recover from stress. We’re going to do a quick meditation activity that is designed to stimulate the body’s relaxation response.

ACTIVITY: HEART CHAKRA MEDITATION
Lead the group through the heart chakra meditation exercise following the script and timing below:
– Close your eyes, and focus on taking deep, diaphragmatic breaths so that as you inhale, your abdomen expands, and as you exhale, your abdomen contracts. (10 seconds)
– Focus your attention and intention in the center of your chest, which is your heart chakra. (10 seconds)
– This is the center of sympathy, compassion, harmony, laughter and love. (10 seconds)
– As you focus on this center, notice how your heart chakra feels. Focus on someone or something that you love. As you focus on this person, notice how your heart chakra changes. (30 seconds)
– Continue to focus on this person, and allow the sensations in the heart center to get stronger and stronger. (15 seconds)
– As these sensations get stronger, allow them to overflow the heart center and permeate your entire being. (15 seconds)
– Continue to concentrate on the physical sensations of love in your body and the heart chakra. (15 seconds)
– Now let go of the thought of the person, and focus on what love feels like in your body. (20 seconds)
– Whenever you are feeling stressed or overwhelmed, realize that these sensations of love are only a thought and breath away.
Have the participants open their eyes.

The Stress Cycle
SAY
Stress and relaxation are always the top answers, with pain relief in second place.
Because stress-relief is a primary goal for most spa guests, it is imperative that we address stress in every single spa treatment we perform. To figure out how to do this, we must first discuss what stress is, why stress is such a challenge and how we can help our guests recover from stress.

Money (finances, paying bills)
Work (deadlines, your boss)
Health
Relationships (parents, kids, divorce)
Traffic

ASK
What is the spa therapist’s goal for a guest dealing with stress?
(Accept any answers.)
Can we get rid of our guests’ stress permanently?
(Listen for: no)
SAY
We actually all need stress because as it acts as a motivator. Without work stress, you would not try to be the best employee. Without money stress, you wouldn’t go to work. Without the stress of having kids, you wouldn’t focus on being a better parent.
As we already discussed, we cannot get rid of stress. For example, the only way to eliminate the stress of having kids would be to get rid of the kids, which you obviously would not do!

This is why the Aveda Spa approach is so important. The Aveda Spa approach focuses on recovery from the negative effects of stress that accumulate over time.
Have participants fill in the blank in their technical guides.
To figure out how we do this, we need to discuss stress and how our body processes it through the stress cycle.

A - Adrenal Glands
When you experience stress, this system is engaged. If we slow the process down, we can walk through each stage of the stress cycle.
Think about a classic stress scenario of walking in the woods to gather food. Suddenly, a bear appears on the path in front of you. How does your body process this stress?
Slide 14
Page 4
Direct learners to the Technical Guide.
SAY
It begins with the hypothalamus, which regulates homeostasis and controls many of our autonomic nervous system functions.
The hypothalamus has a private communication system with the pituitary gland. When you encounter a stress, it releases the corticotrophin-releasing hormone (CRH) which sends a message to the pituitary gland.

SAY
The pituitary gland is the master gland of the endocrine system. When it gets the message from the hypothalamus, it releases the adreno-corticotrophin-releasing hormone (ACTH), which sends a message to the adrenal glands.
Slide 16

The adrenal glands then produce the stress hormones epinephrine (adrenaline), norepinephrine and cortisol.

The Stress Cycle
SAY
This response system works well for acute stress, but it is not as effective for chronic stress. Let’s define each type of stress.
Acute stresses are the survival stresses. They are usually intense but short-lived. One thing that distinguishes acute stress from chronic stress is that your full attention is required to combat acute stress. If a bear jumps out at you, you have to react. If a person pulls out in front of you while driving, you cannot say, “I don’t want to deal with this today,” and ignore it. You must react.
ASK
How many of the stresses you wrote down on page 2 are acute stresses?
(Accept any answers, but the typical answer is none.)
SAY
When we have acute stresses, the body’s stress cycle kicks into high gear right away, and we react. It is remarkably effective and instantaneous. You don’t even have to think about it—you just react. If someone pulls out in front of you while driving, you do not have time to think, “What is my best option here?” Instead, you immediately react by slamming on the brakes and turning the wheel to hopefully avoid the accident.
Therefore, the challenge that most people have is not acute stress but chronic stress.
Chronic stress is usually long-lasting but not as intense as acute stress. It is our day-to-day worries of money, relationships, work, etc. It is distinguished by the fact that you can ignore it if you want to. For example, if you came to class today worried about money, you probably put that worry aside in order to focus on the class. But even though
The Stress Cycle Educator Guide
Page 20 Stress-Fix™ Manicure & Pedicure
The Stress Cycle
you can ignore these worries, they often simmers under the surface, which eventually affects your body.
In general, acute stress triggers a stronger epinephrine and norepinephrine reaction. Cortisol is an anti-inflammatory hormone, and inflammation is a common symptom of your reaction to stress. This hormone helps your body return to normal.
Slide 20
Page 7
Direct learners to the Technical Guide.
SAY
With chronic stress, the epinephrine reaction may be smaller, but you are still producing internal inflammation. Internal inflammation is currently being studied, as it influences many disease processes. When you have this inflammation, your body tries to settle it with the anti-inflammatory hormone of cortisol.
Therefore, during chronic stress, cortisol levels can be high.
ASK
How do many people react to stress?
(Accept any answers, but listen for: eating processed foods, taking over-the-counter drugs or drinking alcohol)
Leader Guide The Stress Cycle

The Stress Cycle
Slide 21
SAY
Many people combat stress by eating processed foods, taking over-the-counter drugs or drinking alcohol. These choices can make the problem worse by increasing internal inflammation, which produces more cortisol.
Cortisol it is usually high in the morning, but it decreases throughout the day. When you have a lot of chronic stress or you stay in “fight or flight” mode, your body produces internal inflammation and thus the cortisol remains high.
Let’s review some of the health conditions that have been linked to internal inflammation.
(Read through the list of conditions on the slide and have participants write the list in their technical guides.)

The Stress Cycle Educator Guide
Page 22 Stress-Fix™ Manicure & Pedicure
The Stress Cycle
Slide 23
SAY
An easier way to think about this is through the autonomic (or involuntary) nervous system. There are two parts to this nervous system:
Fight or flight (sympathetic)
Rest and digest (parasympathetic)
ASK
In an ideal world, in which of these two systems would we prefer to spend most of our time?
(Accept any answers, but listen for: both)
SAY
We have both systems, and we should use both. If you are always in rest and digest mode, what would you do if you put your hand on a hot stove? You would let it sit there, noticing how hot it felt and how weird it smelled.
That’s why it is important to maintain a balance with these systems. In other words, our bodies need periods of action followed by periods of rest and recovery. This is the way nature intended us to work. But because of our 24/7 lifestyles, constant multitasking and access to technology, we are spending more time doing and less time being. We are losing our balance and becoming dominant on the

sympathetic nervous system. When this happens, we are operating from the fight or flight system 70–90% of the time. As a result, our health suffers.
Slide 24
SAY
A common condition caused by chronic stress is sympathetic dominance, which occurs when the sympathetic nervous system is overworked.
Dr. Andrew Weil was one of the first doctors in the U.S. to talk about sympathetic dominance back in the 1970s and 1980s. Other doctors at the time thought he was making up conditions, but a trip to Japan where this was common thinking (Japan is a very fast-paced, stressed society) helped him stay the course and prove his point. Now many doctors recognize stress as a critical health problem.
Consider this quote by Norman B. Anderson, Ph.D.—the American Psychological Association’s CEO and Executive VP:
“Stress is hurting our physical and emotional health and contributing to some of the leading causes of death in this country. People are also saying they have difficulty implementing the changes they know will decrease their stress and improve their health. Yet, our health care system is not adequately addressing this issue or providing the behavioral health treatments that can help Americans. All of us, including the medical community, need to take stress seriously since stress could easily become our next public

The Stress Cycle
health crisis. Year after year, nearly three-quarters of Americans say they experience stress at levels that exceed what they define as healthy, putting themselves at risk for developing chronic illnesses such as heart disease, diabetes and depression.”
There is another quote in your technical guide about health and stress.
Ask a volunteer to read the quote out loud.
“Many people overuse their sympathetic nervous system. This is a mental or lifestyle tendency more than anything else. The sympathetic system is exhausted, but they continue to use it or stimulate it anyway. As a result, they do not spend enough time in a parasympathetic state to fully rebuild their bodies. Their bodies eventually become nutritionally depleted, and they become quite literally ‘burned out.’”
-Lawrence Wilson, MD, from Autonomic Nervous System

Based on everything we just learned about stress, we can conclude that our goal as spa therapists is to stimulate the rest and digest (parasympathetic) nervous system in the body.
We do this through the power of aroma, touch and breath.
The Stress-Fix™ Manicure & Pedicure treatments use these three key elements to stimulate the rest and digest nervous system and begin the recovery process.
Let’s begin by experiencing and learning about the relaxing Stress-Fix™ aroma.

Aromatic Qualities: Floral, sweet, slightly herbaceous
Lavender comes from the word lavare, which means “to wash.” Lavender has a long association with bathing and cleanliness, perhaps because it was a relatively effective antiseptic in a past eras that generally had unsanitary conditions. It is evident in our modern words lavatory and lavage.
Lavender is the most versatile of all of the essential oils. A common saying in aromatherapy is, “When in doubt, use lavender.” It is also the most widely studied essential oil. Studies suggest it has a number of properties, including:
Anti-anxiety
Anti-microbial
Anti-stress
Anti-insomnia
Reduction of cortisol (stress hormone) levels in the body
Now let’s learn about lavandin.
Botanical Latin name: Lavandula abrialis or Lavandula x intermedia
Extraction: Distilled
Plant Part: Flowering tops
Aromatic Qualities: Floral, sweet, with more camphoraeous undertones than true lavender
Lavandin is a hybrid that was developed in the early 1900s by crossing true lavender and spike lavender. It grows well at lower elevations, which true lavender cannot. It is good for sore muscles and can be used for minor cuts and burns. It is known for its relaxing properties and has been used to clear the sinuses because of its camphor content.

Finally, let’s learn about clary sage.
Botanical Latin name: Salvia sclarea
Extraction: Distilled
Plant Part: Flowering tops
Aromatic Qualities: Smooth, herbaceous note with a tenacious balsamic undertone
The origin of clary sage is from the Latin word salvare, which means “to heal,” and sclarea, which means “clear.” The common name of clary is “clear eye,” which comes from folk medicine’s use of the plant's mucilaginous seeds to reduce inflammation of the eye.
It has been used in aromatherapy as a sedative and stress-balancer, and it is known as the quintessential remedy for depression. Some cultures also used this oil to soothe the effects of menopause. Clary sage has been described as relaxing and euphoric and is good for all skin types—especially normal to dry skin.

Body Lotion Ritual for Hands
Because of our work with computers, the hands often carry tension. If you type for long periods of time or use your hands repetitively in any way, repeat this ritual once a day. Follow along in your technical guide as I review the steps:
Apply Stress-Fix™ Body Lotion to your hands. Hold them over your nose, and take a deep breath.
Rotate the wrist several times in one direction, then the other.
Using the thumb, massage the palm of the hand with effleurage motions starting at the base of the hand and moving toward the fingers. Repeat several times.
Using the thumb, massage the entire palm of the hand using circular friction motions.
Turn your hand over. Starting at the wrist, use an effleurage movement and massage the back of the hand toward the fingers. Repeat several times.
Massage each finger by pressing on either side using a pinch-and-release motion.
Stimulate the pressure point located between the thumb and index finger. The location of this point is along the bone of the index finger in an indention near the base of the thumb. Activating this Chinese pressure point, called

After you get out of the shower, massage Stress-Fix™ Body Lotion into your hands. Hold them over your nose, and take a deep breath.

Usage & Application

Let’s review some of the home care rituals you can share with guests that utilize the Stress-Fix™ Concentrate.
Concentrate Ritual for Scalp
This ritual is effective to perform whenever you are feeling overwhelmed, have tension headaches or simply need a quick break from your stress. The back of your head is an attachment area for over 20 muscles, and stress can create tension in these muscles. In addition, there are two points on either side of the back of the head that Chinese Medicine call the Heavenly Pillar (B 10) and Heaven’s Gate (GB 20) Massaging these points can increase the body’s energy flow because these points are exit pathways from the head along the energy meridians.
Apply Stress-Fix™ Concentrate to the inside of the wrists. Hold them near your nose, and take a deep breath.

Apply Stress-Fix™ Concentrate to the back of the neck, massaging with the rollerball.
Using the rollerball, massage along the occipital bone (the bone at the back of your head) using circular motions. Use pressure that feels comfortable to you. Keep massaging along this bone until you are behind the ears. In places where you feel extra tension, massage longer.
Concentrate Ritual for Shoulders
Now let’s review the Concentrate Ritual for shoulders. When we are stressed, a common area of muscle tension is the upper shoulders. This area relates to responsibilities, and it can feel as if you are holding the weight of the world on your shoulders. Use this ritual anytime you feel soreness or tension in this region.
Apply Stress-Fix™ Concentrate to the inside of the wrists. Hold them near your nose, and take a deep breath.
On your next inhale, lift your shoulders toward your ears.
As you exhale, quickly release your shoulders, and let go of tension and responsibilities for the moment. Repeat 2 times.
Interlock your fingers, and stretch your arms above your head for one full breath.
Apply Stress-Fix™ Concentrate using the rollerball to the upper shoulders. Massage the upper shoulders with a pressure-point motion (press into the shoulder and release). Repeat several times.
Whenever you feel tension, hold the pressure for five seconds and release. Cover the entire upper shoulder area.
Finish by taking a deep breath, noticing the differences you feel in your shoulders.

Let’s review some of the home care rituals you can share with guests that utilize the Stress-Fix™ Soaking Salts.
SAY
There are three options for home care rituals using Stress-Fix™ Soaking Salts that all include bathing and breathing exercises. The breath is the only conscious connection we have to the “relaxation response” of our nervous system. Combining a breathing exercise with warm water and Stress-Fix™ Soaking Salts will leave you feeling renewed. These exercises can take a little longer, but only need to be done once a week.
Bathing Ritual 1: Diaphragmatic Breathing
Draw a warm bath.
Light an Aveda candle.
Add 2 Tbsp of Stress-Fix™ Soaking Salts to the bath.
When you get in the bath, close your eyes, and take a deep breath. Inhale the aroma, and mentally let go of your stress, focusing your mind solely in the moment.
Place your hands on your abdomen. With each inhale, focus on expanding your abdomen. With each exhale, focus on contracting your abdomen.
Repeat for 5–10 minutes.
Bathing Ritual 2: Alternate Nostril Breathing
According to Ayurveda, this breath helps to calm your body like no other. It is said to clear the “channels of communication” to help you feel restored.
Draw a warm bath.

A key muscle group in the hands and arms are the wrist flexors, which include the flexor carpi radialis, palmaris longus, flexor carpi ulnaris, flexor digitorum superficialis and the flexor digitorum profundus. These muscles attach on the medial epicondyle of the humerus and the ulna and to various spots around the wrist and hand, including the metacarpals, phalanges and the palmar aponeurosis . The brachioradialis attaches from the humerus and is also located on the lateral part of the forearm, but its attachment on the styloid process of the radius does not cross the wrist. The brachioradialis flexes the elbow and assists pronation and supination.

Breath is life. Breath is health. Most importantly, breath is nutrition. Breath is something we feed our bodies in order to live and be healthy. One can go without food for weeks and water for days, but one can only go without breath for a few minutes. The importance of breath awareness cannot be over-emphasized.
ASK
Why do you think breath is so unique and important?
(Accept any answers.)
SAY
It is a function of the body controlled by the autonomic (involuntary) nervous system. So one does not have to think about breathing; it happens automatically all day long.

Breath
However, the mind also controls the breath. You can tell your body to take a deep breath, and it will. Thus, breath is a great link between the mind and body because it is a function of the body also governed by the mind.
Breath is also the only conscious control we can exert over the rest and digest (parasympathetic) nervous system. We recover from stress in the parasympathetic nervous system, so we can use breath to manage the negative effects of stress on the body.
The Stress-Fix™ Manicure & Pedicure begins with an opening ritual breathing exercise, and we’re going to practice it now.

ACTIVITY: OPENING RITUAL BREATHING EXERCISE

Throughout your treatment, as you breathe in the soothing aroma of lavender, lavandin and clary sage, continue to focus on your breathing, letting your breath be your guide on an exploration of the inner Self. Allow your mind to let go of your stresses and settle into your body, noticing the sensations that you feel and taking the time to enjoy each and every moment.”

Now we’re going to practice the treatments on each other. I’ll be demonstrating each step as we go. Use the protocols in your technical guide as your guide.
During our practice, we will be focusing on the specific Stress-Fix™ massage techniques for the manicure and pedicure—we won’t be performing entire manicures or pedicures on each other.
ACTIVITY: PRACTICE PROTOCOLS
Have participants pair up to perform the treatments on each other.
Demonstrate the techniques as you move through the workshop, and have the participants practice the treatments along with you.

We begin the treatment with an Opening Ritual.
Have the guest sit in the manicure or pedicure chair.
Spray 1–2 sprays of the prepared Stress-Fix™ Aroma Blend over the guest, and guide them through the opening ritual breathing exercise.
Language Example
“I would like you to focus on taking deep, diaphragmatic breaths. As you inhale, your abdomen expands, and as you exhale, your abdomen contracts.

K 1 (Kidney 1 or “Bubbling Spring”)—located on the sole of the foot in between the second and third metatarsal at the tarsal-phalangeal joint. If you flex the toes, a small indention forms at the location of this point. This is also the center area of the diaphragm reflex in reflexology. This is the point through which we draw energy from the Earth, so stimulating this point can have a grounding effect. This point is effective for fainting, hot flashes and impotency. It is said to rejuvenate the spirit.
B 62 (Bladder 62 or “Calm Sleep”)–located on the outside ankle in between the lateral malleolus and the corner of the heel. This point is calming and said to promote healthy sleep and relieve insomnia. It has also been used for ankle pain, heel pain and back pain.
IMPORTANT NOTE
Have the participants switch roles and practice the Stress-Fix™ massage techniques again on their partner.

“Once a week, I also recommend you take a soothing bath with the Stress-Fix™ Soaking Salts. All you need is 20 minutes to yourself. First, draw a bath, and light a candle. When you get into the bath, focus on your breathing and tune in to your body. This can help you feel completely renewed in a short time.”
“You can also use the Stress-Fix™ Body Lotion every day when you get out of the shower using self-massage techniques. Not only will it moisturize your skin, but the aroma can help remind you of the relaxed state you currently feel.”
“Here is a guide to these Stress-Fix™ home care exercises so you can perform them at home to help you manage stress on a regular basis.”
