Third Grade Curriculum

ReadingStudents will observe teacher modeled lessons and participate in

whole class text readings and discussions related to strategies taught to improve decoding and comprehension skills. Students will demonstrate individual understanding of concepts with oral and written responses that rephrase the question and gives explicit evidence from the text to justify their reasoning.

They will learn to identify the following story elements in both fiction and non-

fiction texts: • author's purpose• Plot (conflict, resolution, sequence)• cause-and-effect• main idea and supporting details• fact and opinion• point-of-view• Predicting• inference and drawing conclusions • author's use of figurative language. Also, students will be assigned reading passages that will require them to answer

multiple choice questions based on the above skills in order to assist them in acquiring end-of-grade test taking skills.

Third Grade Curriculum

WritingStudents in third grade write for many purposes, such as:

letters, lists, reports, expository writing, explanations of own learning as well as personal and imaginative narratives. Students will be expected to apply all steps of the writing process (planning, drafting, revising, editing, conferencing, evaluating and publishing) as it is taught and modeled in the classroom. Also, students will be expected to apply grammar and language conventions (capitalization, punctuation, correct spelling) as it is taught. They should strive to write in a clear and sequenced manner, maintaining focus to the topic while providing supporting details and sufficient elaboration. Published products should maintain legible handwriting or the use of a word processor. Rubrics will be created to serve as a student guideline for the assignment as well as a grading tool for the final product.

Third Grade Curriculum

ScienceStudents will learn the following main concepts in science: Forces

and Motion, Matter, Structures and Functions of Living Organisms, Ecosystems, and Energy Conservation and Transfer. Grades will be taken on class participation of hands-on learning activities, quizzes, reports, question and or journal responses, and tests.

Social StudiesStudents will explore the following concepts/areas: History,

Geography, Environmental Literacy, Economics and Financial Literacy, Civic and Governance, and Culture. Concepts will be integrated into other core subjects as much as possible. Grades taken will be based on assignments, reports, quizzes, class participation and tests.

Accelerated Math

The accelerated math program helps to review concepts taught in third grade. It will be used as a constant review and remediation. Your child will be required to work on it daily. As long as your child takes it seriously it can be a successful and rewarding program.

Homework Requirements:

It is very important that your child complete his/her homework each night.

• Math homework will be a review of concepts taught that day or on a previous day.

• Your child will be required to complete assigned reading along with written responses. This helps to improve independent comprehension.

• Word Study homework will be studying for weekly tests. • In science and social studies students will need to study for

quizzes and final tests.

Homework Policy Guidelines for Students• Always do your best work.

• Write directions for homework in the student planner. • Understand assignments clearly before leaving class.• Ask questions about your homework if you do not understand.• Bring home the proper materials to complete the assignments.• Turn in completed assignments on time.• Budget time properly for long-term assignments. The calendar in your planner can help you

project planning.• Complete any missed work due to absence from class. Homework must be completed within

3 days of the absence.• Some assignments will be completed ONLINE!• Understand how homework will affect your class grade. Homework counts as 10% of your

average.• Talk to your parents and teacher if you are having difficulty with homework.• All students will have Reading, Word Study, and Math homework, Monday-Thursday. This does not include studying for upcoming assessments.

Homework Policy Guidelines for Parents

• Be familiar with the philosophy and guidelines of the homework policy.

• Check your child’s agenda or website nightly for assignments.• Establish a daily routine that includes a time and place to do

homework assignments with limited interruptions.• Allow students to complete online assignments• Actively supervise homework completion, assisting, but not doing

the work.• Contact the teacher with questions or concerns especially if your

child exceeds the allotted time frame.

How can YOU help your student be successful?

Learning does not end in the classroom. Children need help and support at home to succeed in their studies. Use the following suggestions to increase their learning while at home:

•Create a quiet place for your child to study.•Carve out time EVERYDAY when your child can concentrate

on reading, writing, and math uninterrupted by friends, brothers and sisters, or other distractions.

•Sit down with your child once a week for 15-30 minutes while he or she works on homework. (This will keep you informed as to what your child is working on.)

•Support the independence needed in this grade level.By taking these small steps, you will be helping your child

become successful both in and outside of the classroom. ***From the Parent’s Guide to Student Success 3rd Grade National PTA,
