Status of Tropical Forest Management 2011
(SFM Tropics 2011)
Organization-Led Initiative in support of the UNFF
28-30 November 2016, Rome, Italy
Takeshi Goto, Assistant Director
International Tropical Timber Organization (ITTO)
Background:
•To assess progress toward SFM, ITTO conducted
Status of Tropical Forest Management 2011 (SFM
Tropics 2011).
•Estimates were made on the areas of natural PFEs
which could reasonably be considered under SFM.
•The survey covered all ITTO producer
countries, which together occupied
80% of world’s
tropical forests.
Status of Tropical Forest Management 2011
(SFM Tropics 2011)
Natural protection PFE
358 million ha
Natural production PFE
403 million ha
Non-PFE
639 million ha
Non-ITTO members
243 million ha
Planted PFE
22 million ha

Data sources:
• Primarily country reports on ITTO C&I revised in
2005;
• FRA 2010, country reports to the World Bank for
FCPF, web-based databases of IUCN and UNEP-
WCMC; and
• Information from ITTO diagnostic missions, ITTO
field projects, ITTO C&I training WSs, NGOs and
organizations and individuals with specialist
knowledge.

(SFM Tropics 2011)
Methodology:
• Member countries provided data using ITTO C&I
Reporting Formats;
• Partner organizations, such as FAO and UNEP-WCMC
and others, provided data;
• Authors compiled country profiles using above data and
other information gained through consultations with in-
country experts and stakeholders;
• Country profiles were reviewed by in-country, regional
and international experts; and
• Global analysis was carried out
based on country profiles.

(SFM Tropics 2011)
Methodology --- Natural production PFE:
Aggregated the areas of:
• Forest management units where independent
certification was practiced or demonstrable progress
was made towards independent certification;
• Forest management units where long-term management
plans were fully developed and effectively implemented;
• Model forest units where information was available on
the quality of management; and/or
• Community-based forest management units with secure
tenure and a known high quality
forest management.

(SFM Tropics 2011)
Methodology --- Natural protection PFE:
Aggregated the areas of natural protection PEF:
• With secure boundaries and management;
• That were generally considered well managed; and
• That were not under significant threat from
destructive agents.
Status of Tropical Forest Management 2011
(SFM Tropics 2011)
Results:
• About 7% of natural PFE were considered sustainably
managed.
Sustainably managed
natural protection PFE
22.7 million ha (6.3%)
Sustainably managed
natural production PFEs
30.6 million ha (7.6%)
Status of Tropical Forest Management 2011
(SFM Tropics 2011)
Conclusions:
• The estimate should be considered conservative, as
they included only the PFEs where reliable
information was available about the quality of forest
management.
• Data were still far from adequate although
improvement was seen, and ITTO and partners
need to work together to improve data availability
and quality.
• Total cost for carrying out SFM Tropics 2011 was
around US$ 500,000.
