Bulletin deadline: Wednesday Noon
second Sunday of Advent
If today were not a Sunday, December 6 would be the feast of
Saint Nicholas. He’s the actual, historical figure from the area of
Turkey near the Black Sea who was a bishop. He was noted for his
charity, holiness and concern for the people, especially the sailors of
his diocese. He is the patron saint of young women about to
be married, small children and sailors. Many of the parts of his real
story eventually “morphed” into how we see Santa Claus today.
In Nicholas’ day, young women were not able to be married unless their family
could provide a dowry to the young groom. This custom was to help the newlyweds
get started in life. Nicholas is said to have tossed small bags of gold coins or gems
into open windows of the homes of sleeping brides-to-be so they would have the
resources to marry. Some accounts have him tossing the gifts down the chimney if
the windows were closed or locked.
He had a special love for the men who sailed the often stormy waters of the
Black Sea and the Mediterranean Sea. He would often offer prayers for them with
their families for their safe return, and would personally greet them on their return to
harbor.
His concern for the children of the diocese was impressive as he established
orphanages and schools for them. Whenever he would go out for walks he
was almost instantly surrounded by children and parents carrying infants, all seeking
his blessing.
Because his feast day was so widely celebrated in so
many countries with only a few weeks before Christmas, this
saint became associated with the custom of gift giving,
although that originated with the three Magi and their gifts to
the Christ Child. As so often happens as stories get told and
re-told, St. Nicholas eventually became known as Santa
Claus. The sleigh and reindeer entered the growing
mythology as Sweden and Norway adopted him as a special
patron. The legend of Santa Claus received its final form in
the renowned poem, “A Visit from Saint Nicholas” by
Clement Clarke Moore in 1823.

Chalices and Ciboria are being
refinished and cleaned
The sacred vessels for Mass from both
parishes were brought to Hurley’s in Fargo,
ND. The company has sent them to Omaha,
NE for cleaning, re-plating and polishing
them. This needs to be done about every 30-
50 years, depending on wear and use. Our
vessels had become severely tarnished, scratched, slightly
dented and some even bent over the years. Each one is detailed
by hand, so the process is expensive. St. Vincent sent in two
chalices and one ciborium for a cost of $1,650.00. St. Leo
sent in four chalices, three ciboria, one paten and one large pyx
(used for homebound) for a cost of $4,340.00. We are seeking
donations to help cover the cost. We will use the old crystal
and clay vessels until these are returned.
Thanksgiving collection
We received $642 in our Thanksgiving
collection. This amount will be sent to Catholic Campaign for Human Development.
They are committed in addressing issues such as
human trafficking and immigration.
