GOD’S WORD TODAY “Where can we buy enough food for them to eat?” This question, posed by the Lord to Philip, signaled the beginning of the miracle of the multiplication of the loaves and fishes, recounted in today’s Gospel. In the last few years the world has witnessed catastrophic natural disasters. The destruction that they wrought left us all stunned, wondering how we could help, even in some small way. Today’s Gospel reminds us that when even our small efforts at helping people are multiplied, a miracle of comfort and healing is the result. As we listen to God’s word and share in the miracle of the Eucharist, let us open our hearts to those in need, doing whatever we can to help alleviate the suffering of many.

PASTOR’S CORNER Well, another Ox Roast Fair has come and gone. It was a tremendous success because of the hard work and cooperation of many people, great and small. To everyone who assisted, you have my heartfelt thanks! Three areas in particular helped make this a very successful event: the motorcycle raffle ~ you did great; the 21 trade booths, the best in recent memory, and the sponsorships of stages and specific events. We added some capital improvements like the concrete for the Ox Sandwich booth. We also were fortunate on Friday that the storm passed without harm and Saturday that the fire at the French fry booth wasn’t worse. Fr. Ed Stafford joined us Friday night. This was his reaction. “This is bigger than a county fair!” “It is great to see so many young people involved in this project!” I feel confident that we have met our budget goals thanks to the hard work and generosity of many people. As usual we won’t have exact figures about our net profit until early September when all the bills have been paid. In our community I have heard many compliments about the friendliness and hospitality people experienced here at St. Joe’s. God bless you all!

Fr. Mike Garvey

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Sooner of later, as they plan their wedding liturgy, a couple will receive some advice about a “unity candle.” They need one, they are told (at great expense); it is a tradition; it is what Catholics have always done. Not so. In the last thirty years or so, the custom has enjoyed wide popularity in the United States. It has never been officially part of our liturgy, and it exists in tension with some of our core symbols. Usually there are two smaller candles and one larger one to be lit from the smaller. Large candles in our tradition always mean Christ, and smaller ones are always tokens of our baptismal candle. If the candles are meant for a kind of renewal of baptismal vows, then the meaning is clearer, yet this is seldom the understanding. Why, then, are those smaller candles extinguished? It’s hard to tell where these pesky candles came from. Some suggest that the Presbyterian Church, which has a very lean wedding liturgy, introduced them as an option for extending a short service. Generally, it’s been experienced as a “photo opportunity” rather than a genuine liturgical ritual. The “unity candle,” a recent invention rather than an authentic tradition, has not been approved as an adaptation to our rite, and it is to be hoped that it will gradually disappear from view.
