THE GIFT OF GOD'S WORD On this day of gifts and gift-giving, it seems appropriate that we take a moment to reflect on the great gift of God's Word. Because it is creative, God's Word always points to its author, always calls us to respond. Because it is powerful, God's Word can link the sublime with the ridiculous, the transcendent with the immanent, the divine with the human. Because it is graceful, God's Word establishes a relationship of deep intimacy between us and God. At the heart of God's Word lies a tantalizing tension between the mysterious and the mundane. In our liturgical celebration, this unresolved tension both reveals the meaning of life for us and calls us to respond, to act upon that meaning. Once accepted and opened, the gift of God's Word is a gift that keeps on giving and keeps on calling us to give in return. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION An old joke asks, "What time is Midnight Mass?" The answer is not really obvious, since Christmas is unique in having several distinct celebrations. The readings and prayers vary greatly from hour to hour. The Vigil Mass hinges on the family heritage of Jesus and his origins. The concept of "midnight" predates clock time, and really has to do with a celebration in the hours of darkness. Years ago, it was not possible to receive Communion without fasting for a full day, so the late hour of this Mass made it possible for the people to receive. The first Mass after sunrise, the Mass at Dawn, was once known as "The Shepherds' Mass," and later Masses set aside stories of Jesus' birth to focus on the key to the day's celebration: John the Evangelist's majestic theology of Christ's identity as the Word made flesh, dwelling among us. One feast, four separate Masses. Only monasteries manage the whole round. Parishioners typically take just one entry point into the mystery. Yet there is much to savor and celebrate in the coming of Christ into the world. Christmas is not a day, but a season. You still have two weeks to send those Christmas cards before you're officially late!

CELEBRATING SUNDAYS… The 2016-17 copy of Celebrating Sunday for Catholic Families is available in the church Narthex. This booklet is filled with Sunday activities for families based on the weekly readings at Mass. I hope you will enjoy this worthwhile resource. CONFIRMATION NEWS Reconciliation - Confirmation Candidates and their sponsors and parents are reminded to participate in the sacrament of Reconciliation prior to the sacrament of Confirmation in March. Reconciliations are heard every Saturday, beginning at 4:00 p.m. in St. Joseph’s Church.
Confirmation Retreat – The Confirmation Retreat will be on Saturday, January 28, 10:00 a.m.–6:00 p.m., beginning in the Parish Center and ending with 5:00 p.m. Mass here at St. Joe’s. More details to follow. FIRST COMMUNION PARENTS New Date >>> There will be a meeting of First Communion Parents and Children on Sunday, January 22, beginning at 10:00 a.m. We will practice the First Reconciliation Liturgy at this time. The Catholic Parishes of Portage County are once again sponsoring a monthly Dinner & Doctrine series for Catholics of the area to be held at The Overlook, 1519 Overlook Rd., Twin Lakes (formerly the Twin Lakes Country Club). The evenings include a buffet dinner beginning at 6:00 p.m. (with a cash bar)
followed by a guest speaker, 7:00-8:00 p.m. The next presentation will be Tuesday, January 17, featuring Fr. Pat Manning, Associate Professor of Theology, Walsh University. His topic for the evening will be “The Woman At The Well - Ancient Disciple/Modern Model”. Celebrating Sacraments
BAPTISM: Please contact the Parish Office for Parent Preparation Sessions and scheduling.
FIRST EUCHARIST: Preparation & celebration held during 2nd grade.
CONFIRMATION: Celebrated with the Bishop annually for Catholics in 8th grade (or older) who have attended preparation classes.
RECONCILIATION: Saturdays, 4:00-4:30 p.m., or any time by appointment. Communal services held during Advent and Lent.
ANOINTING OF THE SICK: Please contact the Parish Office to inform us of anyone who is sick (home or hospital) for visitation or anointing. Communal services are held annually.
MARRIAGE: Couples should contact the Parish Office/Priest before making any arrangements for marriage (at least 6 months in advance). Couples must be registered in the parish and participate in the marriage preparation program.
