Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick The Anointing of the Sick “is not a sacrament for those only who are at the point of death. Hence, as soon as anyone of the faithful begins to be in danger of death from sickness or old age, the fitting time for him to re-ceive this sacrament has certainly already arrived” CCC1514 The Sacrament of the Anointing will be offered during
all Masses the weekend of November 9 & 10, (at the
Sunday 8:00 AM Mass, it will be offered immediately
following Mass.) Your parish family is honored to pray
with you as you come forward for this Sacrament of
healing and strength. If you have any questions about
the Sacrament of Anointing, please contact Deacon
Jeff.

October Is Respect Life Month—the Church has consistently taught a respect of life through all stages of life from conception to natural death. During Respect Life Month, I will be offering bulletin box articles written by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. This week’s topic is What to Do When a Friend is Considering
Abortion. The full text of the article can be accessed by the web address in the box.
All Saints Day Schedule—All Saints Day is a Holy Day of Obligation. Masses will only be celebrated on the day with no Vigil Mass on Halloween (October 31). Mass times are, Friday, November 1, at 8:15 AM and 5:30 PM.
All Souls Day—is Saturday, November 2. Given the importance of All Souls Day, that we remember all of the faithful departed through death, we will have Mass that day. The time is listed below.
All Souls Day models what we can do every day, which is to pray for the deceased. Praying for deceased loved ones and friends is an expression of ongoing love for and connection with them. These prayers are powerful and should be extended to all who have died, those we don’t know and even enemies and those who have harmed us. While praying for the deceased, we ask that God forgive their sins and receive their souls into the eternity of heaven. As Catholics, we believe in Purgatory, a state that exists for souls that die in God’s grace and friendship, though imperfectly purified, but are assured of their eternal salvation. After death, they undergo purification to achieve the holiness necessary for entry into heaven. The Church’s teaching about Purgatory is based on the practice of prayer for the dead mentioned in Scripture (2 Maccabees 12: 46). Prayers are offered for the deceased, especially the Mass, so that the souls in Purgatory may be purified and attain union with God in heaven. The Church also recognizes almsgiving, indulgences and works of penance on behalf of the dead. All Souls Day Mass, Saturday, November 2, at 8:30 AM.
Book of the Dead—We will have a Book of the Dead at the Blessed Mother’s shrine in the church (where the statue of Mary is located) with the names inscribed in it of those who died this past year and whose funerals we celebrated through our parish. You are invited to inscribe the names of your loved ones and friends in the book. We will hold them all in our prayers, especially throughout the month of November.
2019 Christmas Mass—You may think it is a bit early to speak about Christmas Masses, but I want to assist you in planning for which Mass you will attend. The Mass times will not change this year, but we will have one less Mass. Since we are now a one priest parish, the 4:00 PM Christmas Eve Mass in the school gym will not occur. Rather, all Masses will be celebrated in the church and we will welcome the overflow for any Mass in the church basement where a large TV screen and sound system will be set-up.
The Christmas Mass schedule is:
4:00 PM Christmas Eve—This Mass time is the most popular and hence is very crowded.
6:30 PM Christmas Eve—This Mass has competed with the 9:00 AM Christmas Day Mass as the second most crowded which means about two-thirds of the church being filled.
9:00 PM Christmas Eve—This is the least crowded of all the Masses and is usually half full.
9:00 AM Christmas Day—This Mass can be on par with the 6:30 PM Christmas Eve attendance or larger.
Fraudulent Email Messages—Over the past month or so, there have been various fraudulent email messages that have supposedly been sent by me asking for a favor, that you contact me immediately via email or that you buy gift cards for someone who is in need of them. This is a widely practiced scam where the thief masquerades as a clergy person known to the email recipient. The recipient is tricked into believing that the email is authentic and the request sincere. These emails are not being sent by me nor do I conduct business in this way. When you receive an email such as what I described: 1. Check to determine if it is my authentic email address. Check every letter and number in the address to verify its authenticity. 2. You can always call the parish office to determine if I sent the email to you. 3. Never disclose personal information, finance or buy what is requested in the email. If you have been defrauded, you can report it to the FBI. Please see these websites: (https://www.ic3.gov/default.aspx and https://www.ic3.gov/faq/default.aspx).
Faith in Our Future—You are invited to participate in the focus group process in preparation for a capital campaign at St. Joseph. The reason for the focus groups is to invite parishioner input regarding how our parish facilities and property might be improved to serve the parish now and into the future. The facilities include the church, school, office and rectory. The parking lot and the rest of the property comprises the parish grounds. This is a time to dream and be creative while being realistic at the same time.
The last date, time and location of the focus group is: Sunday, October 27, 6:30-8:00 PM, in the church hall. Please attend with great ideas to share and minds open to the possibilities for the parish buildings and grounds.
