“I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the
Only Begotten Son of God.” Part I
What’s in a name? More than we might think.
The second major part of our belief in one God
concerns the second person in the Trinity, the
Son. We call the Son of God our One Lord Je-
sus Christ. Names signify meaning. I’ve written
to you all about God and the word “One,” but not
God and “Lord”.
When we read the Old Testament we often hear
God referred to as “Lord.” This comes from a
Greek rendering of the name of God as Kyrios.
Kyrios is the same word we use in the beginning
of Mass asking God to forgive our sins: “Lord,
have mercy,” or Kyrie eleison. In the creed the
word “Lord” points to the Son’s divinity
(CCC446).
In the New Testament Jesus is often referred to
as “Lord.” “Lord” had the common meaning of
being the ruler of a household. It had an extra
ordinary meaning that signified a ruler of a na-
tion. But often the association with Jesus as
Lord signified his divinity. The Son of the Father
we believe in rules as Lord, the God of heaven
and Earth. As you can see there’s more in a
name than we might think.
Fr. Jeff
"Yo creo en un solo Señor Jesucristo, el
Hijo Unigénito de Dios." Parte I
¿Lo que hay en un nombre? Más de lo que
podríamos pensar. La segunda parte principal de
nuestra creencia en un Dios se refiere a la
segunda persona en la Trinidad, el Hijo. Llamamos
perdone nuestros pecados: "Señor, ten piedad", o
Kyrie eleison.

Tercer Domin-go de donaciones pa-ra SVDP
The Jubilee year will close with the liturgical Solemnity of Christ the King on 20 November 2016.
On that day, as we seal the Holy Door, we shall be filled, above all, with a sense of gratitude and thanks-
giving to the Most Holy Trinity for having granted us an extraordinary time of grace. We will entrust the
life of the Church, all humanity, and the entire cosmos to the Lordship of Christ, asking him to pour out
his mercy upon us like the morning dew, so that everyone may work together to build a brighter future…
May the balm of mercy reach everyone, both believers and those far away, as a sign that the Kingdom of
God is already present in our midst!
– Pope Francis (Misericordiae Vultus)
In these last weeks of the Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy, be sure to take advantage of the time
remaining. These resources will assist you:
Year of Mercy Indulgence - A Golden Opportunity! It’s not too late to obtain the Year of Mercy
plenary indulgence. Within a three week period or less, the faithful are asked to go to Confession, receive
the Holy Eucharist, make a profession of faith, pray for the Pope, and perform an act of charity or visit a
designated holy door. When all of these acts are performed with the intention of receiving the indulgence
and one remains in a state of grace, the indulgence is obtained.
Tour of Pope St. John Paul II Relic: The Archdiocese is sponsoring a special tour of a relic of St. John
Paul II – the saint who had a profound devotion to Divine Mercy, and who canonized St. Faustina. The
tour, which runs from November 8-19, will include stops at St. Edward in Keizer, Sacred Heart in
Medford, St. Alice in Springfield, and St. Anne’s in Gresham. See the attached flyer and visit http://
pdxmercy.org/saint-john-paul-ii-relic-tour for more details.
Pray for the Living and the Dead: The works of mercy highlighted for November are pray for the
living and the dead & bury the dead. We live in the hope that Jesus Christ “will wipe every tear from
their eyes, and there shall be no more death or mourning, wailing or pain, [for] the old order has passed
away.” (Rev. 21:4) This hope moves us to pray for those who have gone before us, that they may enjoy
the fellowship of the saints, in the eternal beatitude of the heavenly kingdom. During the week of
November 14 – 20, every parish and school may choose to place a “Book of Remembrance” in a promi-
nent location. Parishioners and students are encouraged to write the names of their deceased loved ones
to be prayed for during parish and school Masses. For a list of ideas and to learn more about November’s
work of mercy, please visit http://www.pdxmercy.org/november.
