ASH WEDNESDAY
Prayer, fasting, and almsgiving: these disciplines, prescribed by Jesus himself in the Sermon on the Mount, along with strict instructions not to flaunt them in public to win recognition and praise (Matthew 6:1-18), have been embraced by all the saints at the beginning of every Lent for almost two thousand years. But mention Lent, and many react with a grimace or slight shudder—even now, years after official obligations have been reduced to a minimum! No wonder the Eastern Rite’s “Lenten Announcement” sounds surprising: “Let us receive with joy, O faithful people, the divinely inspired announcement of Lent! The Lenten Spring shines forth! Begin the fast with joy! Let us fast from passions as well as food, taking pleasure in the good works of the Spirit, and accomplishing them in love!” Saint John Chrysostom, whose feast is September 13, elaborates: “Do you fast? Give proof by your works. If you see a poor person, take pity. An enemy, be reconciled. A friend gaining honor, don’t be jealous.” A positive approach! May the saints help us keep such a Lent! —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
FOOLISHNESS
Sometimes the idea of repentance seems old-fashioned, naïve, even foolish. But if you’re looking for real foolishness, you’ll find it in today’s readings.
We begin with Leviticus and the admonition, “Take no revenge and cherish no grudge” (Leviticus 19:18). We’ve heard that message before, of course, so we might forget how far it is from the so-called “practical realities of life.” Saint Paul warns us about being practical, though. Whoever considers oneself wise had better “become a fool,” because “the wisdom of this world is foolishness in the eyes of God” (1 Corinthians 3:18, 19).
This “foolishness” continues in the Gospel: “Offer no resistance to one who is evil” (Matthew 5:39). In fact, offer the other cheek when you’ve been slapped. Hand over your coat as well as your shirt. Be like God, who sends sunshine and rain on the bad as well as the good. “So be perfect,” says Jesus, “just as your heavenly Father is perfect” (5:48). Commitment Sunday. Our sharing of time, talent, and treasure enables us to Jesus’ disciples, His followers who make a healing difference in the world.
Please fill out the ACA pledge envelope and submit it with the 2nd collection at Mass this weekend or simply bring it to the rectory during the week. Thank you for pledges and continued support.
2020 SOUP AND SALAD FUNDRAISER
It's soup and salad fundraiser time again! We hope you are looking forward to having a great time while helping us raise money for the Senior Luncheon which is held later this year. We provide busing from Terrace Nursing Home for many immobile and elderly residents. This requires buses equipped with elevators and other special need equipment.
Saturday, March 7th at 6:30 pm in Hunter Hall Tickets are $10 for adults and children 12 and over; or families with school age children $25.
Tickets will be sold after all the Masses the weekends of Feb. 22/23 and Feb. 29—Mar 1. If there are tickets left, you may buy one at the door, March 7th.
COINS FOR CARE — ALMSGIVING DURING LENT
On the weekends of March 1 & 7, empty medicine bottles will be placed in boxes in the church
vestibule in the East and West lobbies in order to collect “Coins for Care” in support of ElderCare. This organization helps the elderly home-bound seniors in Lake County to remain in their homes as long as possible.
Please place your pocket change in the medicine bottles and return them on or before Palm Sunday, April 5th . Thank you for your support.

Church Etiquette As in most important moments, cell phones ringing, buzzing
or people texting is highly inappropriate. This is just a friendly reminder to please turn off your phones prior to the Mass beginning. It is NEVER appropriate to answer your phone in the Church or make a call. Emergencies are
obvious exceptions.
PAPER RECYCLING BINS
You may have noticed that our paper bins are no longer in the parking lot. We learned that Midwest Paper Retriever is no longer supporting the program of giving back an incentive for recycling. Due to the cost, it was decided to have the bins removed. Thank you to all who in the past participated.

Ready, Set, Renew! The parishes of St. Dismas and St. Anastasia will merge, both staying to form a new combined parish. The church buildings of both parishes remain open as places of worship. Staffing decisions will be made to consolidate, cut back, optimize, economize. What will the name of the new parish be? Who will be the pastor? How many associates and deacons will there be? How will mass schedules be affected? What about the clubs, committees, groups, programs? So many details and questions to be answered...
The details will be worked out... given time. There will be a transition period, how long is to be determined. Long term success will be measured by how well three mission imperatives are met: 1) Make Disciples, 2) Build Communities, 3) Inspire Witness. It may take a long time to determine whether these mission imperatives have been met.
However, for me short term success will be measured by who stays! How many parishioners stick around? Do I stay or do I go? Each one of us will be faced with that decision. Each of us reacts to change differently, in our own way. Please be prayerful and respectful to each of our parishioners, and for the parishioners of the other congregation. I urge all of you to be prayerful, talk to and listen to the Lord, seek guidance from the Holy Spirit to discern God's will.
Prayerfully yours, Mark Matias
