Sunday, September 19, 2021 Mark 9:30-37

Jesus teaches his disciples that the greatest are those who serve all.

In today’s Gospel, we hear Jesus again predict his passion, death, and Resurrection to his disciples. The setting here is important. Jesus and his disciples are preparing to journey through Galilee, a Jewish territory in which Jesus has already encountered problems with the Pharisees. Perhaps this is why Mark indicates that Jesus was trying to journey in secret. In predicting his passion, Jesus is acknowledging the danger they will face and is trying to preparing his disciples for it. Yet Mark tells us that the disciples did not understand what Jesus was saying and were afraid to ask what he meant. Such hesitation on the part of the disciples is not characteristic behavior. Peter had no fear about rebuking Jesus in last week’s Gospel. Perhaps this is an indication that the disciples were aware that a new situation was emerging.

ST. VINCENT de PAUL CONFERENCE In the Gospel Jesus called the Twelve, and said to them, "If anyone wishes to be first, he shall be the last of all and the servant of all." Taking a child,

he placed it in their midst, and putting his arms around it, he said to them, "Whoever receives one child such as this in my name, receives me; and whoever receives me, receives not me but the One who sent me." Your gift to our Society of St. Vincent de Paul will help hungry children feel the arms of Jesus around them. Our next meeting is Thursday October 21 at 7 PM in the Family Center.

Be good.

Fr Gregg’s 40th Anniversary of Ordination Celebration Dinner and dessert will be served. Tickets are $10 and proceeds will benefit the purchase of a

Maple Tree to be planted in Fr Gregg’s honor in front of the Church. In addition, we invite

you to review your household calendar to see when you might be able to gift Fr Gregg with

your company, as it is his greatest wish! We are looking for Forty Dates with Forty Households

to celebrate his Forty years of priestly life. Contact the parish office to reserve your date

today. Get creative and keep it simple. Time well spent in your company is the best gift of all. Consider some of his favorite activities... fishing, cribbage, cards, a homemade meal, a movie,

a backyard cookout, a dinner out together, your family’s favorite board game...

Tickets will be limited and you can certainly contribute to either gift without attending the dinner.

WHY ARE WE HERE?

WHAT’S LIFE ALL ABOUT?

We are excited to introduce The

Search, a new seven part Augustine Institute Original Series with the goal of lighting that first fire in those who don’t yet know the faith or reigniting the fire in those who need a primer on the foundational questions. Sometimes we get so caught up in the depth of our faith that we forget what it was like to first wrestle with the big questions – Who am I? What am I searching for? What’s our shared story? Who is Jesus? Why do we need a Church? Is there a God? We all need to get back to the basics to make sure the foundation is strong.

Come for a meal, video & conversation. Experience community.

Tuesdays at 6:30 pm beginning September 21

in the Family Center Contact the office to sign up.

EVERYDAY STEWARDSHIP RECOGNIZE GOD

IN YOUR ORDINARY MOMENTS

The View from the Back of the Line

Have you known that person? The one who leaves every person they encounter feeling a little more blessed for having met them? They’re the friend you can count on when nothing is going well. They’re the one who’s always “doing” for others. They’re never gossiping or sniping or complaining.

We wonder how they do it, how they have it in them. We’re a little envious, even if we don’t let ourselves acknowledge it.

That, folks, is what the view is like from the front of the line, gazing at those suckers in the way back and wondering why they’re smiling so much.

We’ve all been at the front of a line and felt no shame about it. We show up early, we put in the time and the legwork, and we “earn” whatever it is we came for — sports tickets, the latest Apple product, whatever. That’s how it works here on Earth, where the fastest win the race, the fittest survive and the first shall be first, always.

It’s exactly why stewardship is such a tall order. Stewardship calls us to play by the rules of another kingdom — one where the richest have the least amount in their bank accounts and the happiest don’t seem to have anything to show for it, at least materially.

If you have a person in your life who always seems happy “doing” for others, it’s because by a boatload of God’s grace, they play by the rules of the other place.

Watch and take notes - and don’t be afraid to join them at the back of the line.

Sharing the Gospel Even though they were friends, sometimes the disciples fought with each other. In today's Gospel reading, they were fighting over who was the most important. All twelve of them wanted to be number one-the best disciple. Then Jesus told them a secret. The best disciple is the one who helps other people. Prayer Dear God, when I am tempted to fight with my friends, show me ways to help them instead. Something to Draw Draw a picture of yourself helping someone who is younger than you. Mission for the Week Ask your family members how you can help each of them this week. When you help them with a cheerful heart, God smiles. ©LPi
